The Harmful Effects of Global Warming

1376 Words3 Pages

The environment and human society have many elements that are sensitive to climate

change. Agriculture, ecosystems, hot and cold requirements, coastal regions, as well as human

well being are examples of elements that are sensitive to climate change. Future generations

need to know that we as human beings did what we could, when we could, to prevent climate

change. Even though global warming is happening slowly, we need to make changes in our

lifestyles now because we are killing our earth and poisoning ourselves with emissions.

Global warming is the rise in average temperatures around the earth, to the point that it

causes changes in the global climate. The effects of these temperature rises are traumatic to our

earth. Global warming has been an area of concern for the government since the late 1980’s. The

IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) concluded in 1990 that if the emissions of

various gases by human societies continued, global warming would occur. In 2007 the IPCC

predicted that by the 22nd century global average surface temperatures would have an increase by

3.2–7.2 °F, depending on a wide variety of possible greenhouse emissions. A greenhouse gas

(also known as GHG) is a gas in an atmosphere that will absorb and emit radiation within the

thermal infrared range (Global Warming. (n.d.). Retrieved from EBSCOhost). The main gases

involved in enabling global warming are Methane, Carbon Dioxide, and Nitrous Oxide. While

there are many more, these are the most harmful. There are natural sources of carbon such as

volcanoes, while man-made sources of carbon include any type of industry as well as the use of

automobiles. There are other greenhouse gases like methane that are na...
