The story of Jay Gatsby is a romantic one that actually began years before. However, his romantic story turns into a troubling one when we realize that he is not the man he seems to be. The story of Jay Gatsby is not only filled with romance, but with secrecy, obsession, and tragedy. The symbol of Jay Gatsby's troubled romantic obsession is a green light at the end of the dock of Daisy Buchanan, a woman to whom he fell in love with five years earlier. The green light represents his fantasy of reuniting with Daisy and rekindling the love they once had. This light represents everything he wants, everything he has done to transform himself, and ultimately everything that he cannot attain. We are first introduced to Jay Gatsby's mysterious side when Nick, the book's narrator, notices him across the lawn. Nick first believes that Gatsby is a secure man by his stance and posture, but he realizes that Gatsby is actually crying at the sight of the green light across the lake. Gatsby then mysteriously vanishes, leaving Nick in curiosity. Nick soon realizes that the green light across the lake is actually a light at the end of the dock of his cousin, Daisy (20-21). This is when the romance side of Gatsby's story begins to slowly unveil. As the story continues, we soon learn that the romance behind Daisy and Gatsby first began in 1917. They had fallen in love when Gatsby was an officer, but their relationship was cut short when Gatsby was sent away to be a soldier overseas. He continued to write letters to her, but she had found someone else, a man by the name Tom Buchanan. She married him the following year for his money, but there was much difficulty getting her to the actual wedding. The day of, she received a letter from Gatsby, making her unsure of her marriage to Tom. But she went through with the marriage, and never thought of Gatsby again. However, their romance is rekindled when Gatsby asks Nick to invite him and Daisy to tea. Nick obliges and creates a simple romantic situation for what seems to be a long lost relationship. When Daisy finally arrives, Gatsby greets her by saying, "we've met before". Daisy agrees, saying it's been many years.
Instead, Nick Carraway invites Daisy and Gatsby to his house in hope that the old couple will connect again. Daisy and Gatsby finally fall in love again

Nick Carraway, the narrator of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, assigns certain types of images and descriptive words to Tom, Daisy and Jordan and continues to elaborate on these illustration throughout the first chapter. Nick uses contrasting approaches to arrive at these character sketches; Tom is described by his physical attributes, Daisy through her mannerisms and speech, and Jordan is a character primarily defined by the gossip of her fellow personages. Each approach, however, ends in similar conclusions as each character develops certain distinguishing qualities even by the end of the first chapter. Lastly, the voices of the characters also helped to project truly palpable personalities.
There are many different types of people in this world. Apart from physical features, it is the characteristics of a person that makes him/her original. Nick Carraway the narrator of The Great Gatsby, has qualities which are the complete opposite of those of Tom Buchanan, his cousin-in-law. In the novel, the author, F. Scott Fitzgerald, uses the comparison between two cousins to show how their differing characteristics reflects the themes of morality and reality versus illusion.
Jay Gatsby is a mysterious businessman from the nineteen twenties that is an ideal example of the American Dream. He falls in love with a young and vibrant woman by the name of Daisy Buchannan. Their admiration for each other enforces a luminous spark of determination upon themselves. This subsidizes their relationship under struggling circumstances, and changed their lives for the better. Daisy and Gatsby are the only two that truly prospered from their “American Dream” in this novel.
The two were young lovers who were unable to be together because of differences in social status. Gatsby spends his life after Daisy acquiring material wealth and social standing to try and reestablish a place in Daisy’s life. Once Gatsby gains material wealth he moves to the West Egg where the only thing separating he and Daisy is a body of water. It is through the eyes of Nick Carraway, the narrator of the novel, that the reader gains insight into the mysterious Jay Gatsby. In Nick’s description of his first encounter with Gatsby he says, “But I didn't call to him, for he gave a sudden intimation that he was content to be alone—he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward—and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock.” The reader soon discovers that the green light is at the end of Daisy’s dock, signifying Gatsby’s desperation and desire to get her back. Gatsby’s obsessive nature drives him to throw parties in hopes that his belonged love will attend. The parties further reveal the ungrasping mysteriousness of Gatsby that lead to speculations about his past. Although the suspicions are there, Gatsby himself never denies the rumors told about him. In Nick’s examination of Gatsby he says, “He had one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. It faced, or seemed to face, the whole external world for an instant and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor. It understood you just as far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself.” This persona Gatsby portrays shows how he is viewed by others, and further signifies his hope and imagination
The second character Fitzgerald analyzes is Daisy Buchanan. Daisy is married to Tom Buchanan. Daisy is the definition of a dream girl, she is smart, gorgeous, and just an ideal woman to be around, and the relationship between her and Tom is quite odd (Baker). Daisy and Tom move to the fashionable East Egg from Chigaco (11). Daisy has everything a woman could wish for, a wealthy husband and an immaculate house. Daisy does not know that Tom is having an affair with Myrtle Wilson. Nick Carraway plays a major role in Daisy’s love life in The Great Gatsby. Nick is Daisy’s second cousin and he knew Tom from college (11). Daisy invites Nick over for dinner one evening and that is how she relearns about Jay Gatsby (11-17). Daisy met Gatsby at a dance in Louisville. They used to be madly in love with one another when he was in the army (). They had plans of always being together and being married in Louisville at Daisy’s home (118). The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, pulls away the curtain and with immense detail portrays the ugly and ignorance of the people and life during the 1920’s. It shrouds light on early America in a corruptive and dishonest time. The American Dream had now been crooked and fraudulent as cheap liquor, huge parties, loosely hung morals, and money beyond dreams was a new way of life. This desire for wealth had caused citizens to be lost and lose control, throwing money left and right.
Books are the like the seasons of the year: the beginning of books are like winter, cold and boring, the middle is a combination between spring and winter, getting warmer, and then the end is like fall, a beautiful mess of colors and extravagant happenings. Similar to The Great Gatsby, each season is portrayed magnificently, but to be more specific, one particular character aids to the overall theme. Throughout The Great Gatsby, the lesson that when life throws you a curveball, you have to get up and keep swinging is exemplified through the entirety of the book, but demonstrated most by Jay Gatsby himself.
Through the chosen quote, Fitzgerald reveals the vital ideas of the American Dream to show how it has been dominated due to the adoption of materialism and industrialization, and so; he emphasizes on the materialistic aspect of the American dream which leads to disenchantment and misery. Nick Carraway, the narrator of the novel, first sees Gatsby standing outside of his mansion, “standing with his hands in his pockets regarding the silver pepper of the stars” (20). He is standing with his arms outstretched towards a green light. Nick says “he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling” (20). Gatsby is staring at the light on the end of Daisy’s dock as it is later revealed. Gatsby is standing there, with his arms stretched out, to welcome the love of Daisy and to give his love to her. He is reaching toward her, trembling because of the power of his love and the pain from their years of separation. The light represents how close Daisy is to him, but still so far away, in separate worlds. It could also be thought of in the sense that his love is still burning bright for Daisy. “Green is the color of hope” (Einem), and can represent “Gatsby’s hope to meet Daisy again and a chance to win her back” (Einem).
