With today’s extraordinary advances in the field of sciences, more and more efforts are being spent on increasing the quality of human life on Earth. Scientists have now applied what they have learned in the study of genetics to help modify and improve the properties of plants and organisms that we can benefit greatly from. Genetic engineering can be beneficial for humanity in the modern age as they are considered safe, able to support the demand of resources by the ever-increasing human population, and provide potential cure to many incurable diseases and possible life extension.

Genetic engineered products that have been approved for use in the international market are all considered safe. In 1995, genetically modified foods (GM foods) have been approved by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for human consumption as it was deemed to meet all the same requirements as traditional organic crops. The FDA evaluates the safety assessments made by the GM foods developers that include the possible harmful effects or toxicity, the potential to cause allergic reaction or allergenicity, the chemical components that is responsible for its nutritional or toxic properties, the chemical stability of the new genes put in place, the change in nutritional value of the food that is accompany with the genetic modification, and the safety measures put in place in case of any adverse effects from the gene modification. A team of knowledgeable scientists from the FDA that are specialized in the fields of: toxicology, chemistry, genetic engineering, and nutrition are required to revaluate the risk assessments provided by the seed developers with great care to ensure the safety of the public. The most recent studies discussed the potential of developing a modified version of telomerase that increases the production of telomeres which can be used to extent human life span. Nevertheless, the future development of gene therapy on humans can greatly improve medical treatment options and the potential for a longer life.
As stated previously, the potential benefits from genetic engineering will have a tremendous impact on humanity in the modern age. With adequate regulations, genetically modified food would be perfectly safe for human ingestion. The many excellent properties of GM crops and GMOs will become the perfect solution for the massive demands of the world. Gene therapy greatly enhances the potentials of medical treatments in the future and immortality.
