INTRODUCTION
Religion is placed throughout many areas of life. It can be used for many different purposes. Historically speaking, religion is something for individuals to believe in for strength and security. While religion plays a large role in an individual’s life, it is to be seen if religion is something that provides individual identification or if it is something that is manipulated during changing times of life. There have been many studies that point toward religion being a thing of centering an individual’s life. According to Lebedev, “These days, religion does not serve to form a person’s basic knowledge about the world, about the social and interpersonal relations out of which his ideas about the meaning and purpose of life organically flow. Religion becomes a part of the individual’s life and world exactly on the level of these latter things, whereas the foundation of his social knowledge in terms of values and worldview turns out not to be correlated with it” (2009: 85).
In this discussion, it is found that individuals place their worldviews into the scale of the religiosity. An individual places great emphasis on what they view as right and wrong based upon their religion. Not only their religion at face value, but the extent to which they actively participate in their religion. Identification in an individual’s religious group may in this sense be the causation of at-risk and cautious young adults. Despite the widespread notion that the hookup culture found across college campuses today is both desired and prevalent throughout Americas advanced educational institutions, Donna Freitas, a professor of religion at Boston College has found quite the opposite to be true. In fact, in her article Sex, Lies, and Hookup Culture, which addresses the distasteful but unavoidable subject, she presents extensive data from her numerous studies which attest that, surprisingly, the majority of students on campuses nationwide are in solidarity with college administrators, church leaders, and other organizations who support the eradication of the harmful culture. However, while such evidence would seem to support an expected quick destabilization of the hookup culture in today’s society, Freitas article notes that unfortunately it continues to persist strongly.
They base their findings on the National Health and Social Life Survey, which found that those born after 1942 were “more sexually active at younger ages” than those born from 1933-42, and the trend toward greater sexual activity among young people “appears to halt or reverse” among those born from 1963-72. In addition to these facts, an English survey of more than 14,000 students from 19 universities and colleges about their hookup, dating, and relationship experiences revealed that 72% of students experience a hookup at least once by their senior year in college, but hooking up hasn’t replaced committed relationships and is not a new concept to young adults. The evidence is convincing and shows that students often participate in both at different times during college (69% of heterosexual students participated in a relationship lasting at least 6 months by senior year as well.) “Sex and religion? Those two don’t really go hand in hand,” commented by a freshmen student from UF. Like this student, numerous people around the world believe this misconception to be true. Whether people argue for or against the importance of sex in religion, more than just what goes on the bedroom has been heating up lately. Many debates have sparked due to the negative connotation associated with sex when confronted about its position in religious cultures. A study done had proven a direct relationship between religiosity and sexual attitudes in college student, but to what extent are their spiritual values influential in their sexual beliefs and what are the reasons behind this (Beckwith, n.pg.). Either way, there is to some extent an influence on sexual behavior, whether it is by gender, ethnicity, or religion. After extensive research and several interviews, I’m determined to find the truth about sex and its importance in religious cultures, its effects on spirituality, and the roles it plays in religion.
Religion is a symbolic representation of society. The sociological approach to religious belief looks at how society behaves on a whole, to answer the question, “Why are people religious?” We express our participation in religious events through plays, acts of confession, religious dances, etc. To begin to understand why we have such term, let’s understand the common elements of religion. Left with two conflicting messages about what safe sex was and how sexual activity was defined, I had little understanding of the concept of "safe sex" throughout most of high school. Once a "college student", I finally recognized myself as a member of an "at risk" population, and a clear understanding of safe sex seemed to become more critical for my maintenance of personal health. This was a key breakthrough for me, because I had never seen myself as a candidate for abstinence under the Catholic sexual ideology or as a candidate for condom-use under the public high school sexual ideology -- I did not identify myself with the target audience of either safe sex message. In the end, I realized that safe sex practices aren't restricted to any particular "target audience". Safe sex is for all of us, and we should embrace all of it.
In America, a significant problem we should look at is regarding sexually active young teens. It seems that almost every teen is sexually active. They are having sex at such a early age. A question that rings in our minds, is do they truly even know what sex is? Growing up, Catholic teachings instructed myself to wait until marriage. They say premarital sex is a sin. Now, not only are churches teaching abstinence, but, schools as well. Premarital sex is a important growing problem: that usually results in a unwanted pregnancy, in some cases; forced abortion, sexually transmitted diseases, ultimate emotions of remorse. Sexual relations among teens is a problem not only for them, but possibly their children and America as a whole.
Religion plays an enormous role in the history of mankind. Wars have been fought over it, lives have been surrounded by it, and it has directly or indirectly shaped the lives of many individuals. Culture and religion play a large role in developing each other. People’s religion is decided by their culture.
