In the 4 books we read, Freedom’s Children, The Pearl, Schooled, and The Iliad, the main protagonists all fight with integrity. In Freedom’s Children, the black kids fight with integrity by protesting to gain freedom. In The Pearl, Kino fights with integrity by fighting for freedom in the form of protest. In Schooled, Cap fights with integrity y being non- violent by protesting. People fight with integrity by protesting for what they believe i. Claudette Colvin fought with integrity by doing what she thinks is right. Claudette Colvin was a black girl who lived in the time where black people were discriminated. She was on a segregated bus. There was a white section and a black section. When there were no white people, Claudette was allowed to sit near the front. When white people started to board onto the bus, the card board signs indicating where the black people sat moved back. It moved past where Claudette Colvin was sitting. Claudette refused to move. The bus driver got the patrolman on the bus, she didn’t move. When Claudette Colvin didn’t move, the police came and arrested her. This was the time when black people were discriminated. This event happened in Montgomery, Alabama. Claudette thought that it was wrong- she thought segregation was wrong and that it violated her Constitutional rights (23). Protest means a refusal of something. Claudette Colvin protested, because she refused to get out of her seat. It was against the law for black people to sit in the white section of the bus. Claudette risked herself going to jail. Claudette knew it was wrong for white people to discriminate black people. She thought it was wrong she had to sit in the black section, so she sat in the white section. Her peers told her mama that she... ... middle of paper ... ...the war with the Trojans. This shows that he is protesting because he objects Agamemnon taking his love away. He decided that it was wrong for Agamemnon to do so, so he did not fight in the war. He informed the whole country of Greece that he would not fight. Achilles fought with integrity by not fighting in the war. People fight with integrity by protesting on what they believe. The black children of Freedom’s Children fought with integrity by protesting to gain freedom. So does Kino- he fought with integrity by protesting to gain freedom as well. Cap fights against violence and unkindness by protesting. In The Iliad, Achilles fought with integrity by protesting against unfair treatment. These people, from different books, different back grounds, from different time periods, from different authors, all fought with integrity by protesting on what they believe in.
Racism is an attribute that has often plagued all of American society’s existence. Whether it be the earliest examples of slavery that occurred in America, or the cases of racism that happens today, it has always been a problem. However, this does not mean that people’s overall opinions on racial topics have always stayed the same as prior years. This is especially notable in the 1994 memoir Warriors Don’t Cry. The memoir occurred in 1957 Little Rock, Arkansas and discusses the Melba Pattillo Beals attempt to integrate after the Brown vs. Board of Education court case. Finally, in Warriors Don’t Cry, Melba Pattillo Beals discusses the idea that freedom is achievable through conflicts involving her family, school life, and friends.

Defiance is the act of boldly resisting authority or any opposing force. The cause of defiance is usually a feeling of discontent with one’s life or a strong belief that the opposing side is wrong. In “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury and “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak, the characters revolt against their government because they are unsatisfied with their lives. This leads to their discovery of who they really are. In Fahrenheit 451, all books are banned and anyone who possesses them gets their house burned. In The Book Thief, Hitler’s Nazi party is very strict and enforces many harsh laws for the citizens of Nazi, Germany. However, many of the characters in both of these books chose to defy the law rather than stand by passively. Despite the often negative consequences, defiance liberates the characters because they are standing up for their important values and following their beliefs, leading them to a fulfilling life.
The discrimination Ruby faced went entering the schools everyday was horrible. The protesters yelled mean and very hurtful things at her. Discrimination is motivated by prejudice. The protesters used the discrimination of blacks to try and deny Ruby the right to go to a white school.
Her spiritual and religious influences helped shape her and prepare her for the positions she would one day fill. Yet it is her own formation of religion and spirituality that garnered her success. although her grandmother’s words gave her the confidence to speak out against violence it was her own belief in the sinfulness of segregation that caused her to act. Her family’s ignorance of the racial problem could have stopped her from attending anything that discussed race. But her own morals told her she needed to participate in some group that retaliated or caused action. She would not let herself sit idly by. She
The debate between silently obeying the law and loudly resisting in the face of injustice is one that has existed since the birth of this country. Those who resist see the obedient citizens as ignorant of what goes on around them. On the other hand, those that are obedient see resistors as radicals. I believe that resistance, whether it be peaceful or violent, is justified. In this paper, I will refer to works by Frederick Douglass, Stephanie Camp, and Deborah Gray White to show that resistance is important to challenge injustices, whether it be slavery in the 1800s or inaction against racism at colleges in 2015.
The question "was Achilles' anger justified" brings up issues that seem to have little or no relevance to the war. In time of war I would expect the leaders to prioritize the groups interest for the sake of unity and cooperation rather than being entrenched in achieving their own personal goals. But my expectations are those of a modern day literature student, I'm inclined to think that the Greeks who first read this epic valued different things than myself. Another relevant question might be "were Achilles' actions justified". Anger can be easily justified, but the actions that anger might lead you to take are not as easily justified. Again I am not an ancient Greek and my opinions are irrelevant unless I open my mind to different viewpoints. Therefore I am striving to look into this issue through ancient Greek eyes where the principle of sacrificing ones own interests was apparently not valued, but maintaining ones honor, on the other hand, was greatly valued. In the following paragraphs I will attempt to answer these two aforementioned questions.

Integrity; it's a word that has seemed to be lost in our country as of late. There isn't much more to be said than that. In American culture, this virtue has seemingly lost all of its sheen, as being honest and showing moral uprightness is not exactly the most attractive of actions anymore. Indeed, if one were to ask a random bystander on the street what the word integrity actually means, they probably would not be able to answer accurately. I personally find that a sad truth, as integrity is not only something that I know, however, but it is also one of my most treasured virtues. I personally believe that integrity is not merely an idea. This virtue is an action; how one decides to live their life every single day.
Claudette Colvin attended Booker T. Washington High School, where she was very studious. Claudette's family did not have enough money to afford a car, so she relied on the city's gold-and-green buses. On March 2, 1955 when Colvin was about 15 years of age, she was arrested for violation the local law. She refused to give up her seat to a group of white men that boarded the bus shortly after. She was on a bus called the Capital Heights, which was the same bus and the same year that Rosa Parks committed the same "crime" as Claudette only 9 months later. On this day, four white men got on the bus, and Claudette was sitting somewhere near the emergency exit. She was looking out the window when the white men stopped at her seat and said nothing. The bus driver ordered her to give up her seat to one of the men, and she ignored the order. She has given her seat up to white people before, but this is the day she was fed up with it. ...rity, as with as much in life, involves a system of interconnected rights and responsibilities that reflect our mutual dependence upon one another. The success of our individual efforts in this course, as with so much in life, depends on all of us conscientiously exercising our rights and living up to our responsibilities. And the failure of any of us--even just one of us--to do what is required will diminish, however slightly, the opportunity for the rest to achieve their goals. That is why it's essential for all of us in this class to practice academic integrity, n both senses of the word practice. For practice today will lay a solid foundation for practice tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that, so that through daily practice integrity will come to woven throughout the fabric of our lives, and thus through at least a part of the fabric of society.
For half of her life, there had been laws and customs that kept African Americans segregated from the Caucasians. These laws allowed whites to treat blacks without any respect. These actions were never thought to be fair. Even as a child, Rosa protested against disrespectful treatment. Yet, it was very difficult to do anything about the law, when all the law makers were of white ethnicity.
The first reason Achilles is an epic hero is because he embodied the characteristics of the ideal Greek citizen at the time Homer wrote; he is in a position of power and regards honor highly. “O my mother! I was born to die young, it is true, but honour I was to have from Zeus, Olympian, thunderer on high! And now he has not given me one little bit! Yes, my lord king Agamemnon has insulted me! He has taken my prize and keeps it, he has robbed me myself” (page 17), Achilles cried to his mother. Agamemnon stole Achilles’ prize, Briseis, so Achilles is begging his mother, the sea nymph Thetis, to help him regain his honor. In Greece, honor was crucial and by taking Achilles’ prize, Agamemnon has stripped him not only of his hard-won prize but of his honor as well. Such a double loss would have been catastrophic for a Greek citizen. Classicist Ian Johnston highlights the significance of his loss, suggesting that “the greatest harm that can occur to a particular warrior is shame, the community’s public recognition that he has let the group down or failed to live up to its shared rules.”Being shamed, in this case, by Agamemnon, would cause the Achaeans to lose respect for Achilles, and as one of their leaders, this would be a tragedy for him. Homer makes it clear that Achilles is a man mainly driven by his hunger for glory. Achilles has all the traits of a superhuman from his strength to his incredible ability to fight on the battlefield. Even with these great abilities, it is hard for many readers to perceive him as a hero because of the way he acts. Integrity is how somebody lives their life. In this life we live, we face choices every day that only we can answer. We dictate how we run our own lives, and they way we run them defines us. Integrity is doing the right thing versus the wrong thing. People, if nothing else, can always have their pride, their integrity. It is something that means a lot to some people and then nothing to others. The ones who value their integrity highly are the good people in this world, and the opposite is true for those who do not value their integrity.
