The foot is one of the most fascinating parts of the human body. The foot alone contains 26 bones, connected by 33 joints, 107 ligaments, and 19 muscles ("Foot Facts: Human Feet Anatomy Information and Problems."). Each one of them performs a special task, each has a unique assignment to perform in order for a person’s utmost benefit of the individual to walk, run, dance, or perform another task that they might have in front of them. This intricate mechanism, which has been refined over years of evolution nearly to perfection in every capacity in which humans move about, is far from indestructible however. There are numerous ailments that befall the human foot including arthritis, bunions, tarsal tunnel, hammertoe, and everyday blisters and bruises, not to mention broken or fractured bones. These plights are often occurring, as one in every six people has a major foot problem, such as those just listed ("Foot Facts: Human Feet Anatomy Information and Problems."). These problems are magnified when one competes at a highly intense level in sports that are almost entirely dependant on the function of the legs and feet. So how does an athlete maintain the health of these precious appendages of the body? To find the answer we go back to 18th century England, where the evolution of the modern-day athletic shoe begins (Kippen, par.1() Shoes have taken different forms throughout history. Clubfoot is a common congenital deformity of one or both feet. Clubfoot can sometimes be identified during fetal ultrasound or by visual inspection at birth. Physiotherapist Kelly Gray and Doctor Paul Gibbons describe clubfoot (Australian Family Practice (AFP), 2012) as “a deformity characterized by structural equinus (pointing down), adductus (turning in), varus (twisting, such that the heel is pointing in or upward), and cavus (high arch)” (p. 299). Skeletal abnormalities of clubfoot can include small calcaneus, navicular, and talus bones and a misshapen subtalar joint (Clubfoot, 2011). According to the Mayo Clinic (2013) the calf muscle of the affected leg is usually smaller than the non-affected leg, and the affected foot can be ½ inch shorter than the non-affected foot.
While reading the De-Orbit Burn module book, I noticed that the origin of the modern midsole for athletic shoes originates from lunar boots used on Apollo missions (Texas, 2013). As a distance runner, I was interested to say the least, so I immediately looked up the correlation of lunar boots to athletic shoes for myself. It did not take long before I came across an article by Jim Sam entitled Technological Spinoffs: Spinoffs from the Space Program. According to this article, “Technology originally developed for the boots worn on the moon, has now been applied to athletic shoes in the mid-sole section. The technology improves shock absorption, stability, and motion control,” (n.d.). It was then that I realized that, thanks to athletic sneakers, we are all walking in the shoes of astronauts.
In today's society, many people are on the latest health kicks. People are doing juice detoxes, cross-fit, and barefoot running. Like detoxes and cross-fit, barefoot running can be good for the body with proper knowledge and in moderation. Some people find barefoot running to be a healthier and more beneficial way to exercise. Using minimalist shoes or loosing shoes completely opens up many doors that can lead to sprains, strains, and other injuries that can make even the most elite runners bed-ridden. Barefoot running is not for amateur runners, it also leave long term effects on the body, and it is the cause of many injuries that would not otherwise occur when running shod.

The soldier ran twenty-five miles to Athens to announce battleground victory over the persians then dropped dead(James). In 1896 the marathon was included in the Olympic games, in Greece, for the first time(James). It was there that the first gold was won by a Greek runner with a time of two hours fifty-eight minutes and fifty seconds(James). The current world record for the fastest finish is two hours three minutes and fifty-nine seconds(James). Marathoning has turned into a world wide activity and every person who participates must endure intense training.
Most people in the world gratefully have the chance to make their own choices and decisions every day.
