What is Ethics? Webster’s dictionary website defines ethic as an area of study that deals with ideas about what is good and bad behavior: a branch of philosophy dealing with what is morally right or wrong. We have ethical training in the military to create a universal standard of behavior because morals are so variable and linked to religious belief. Military leadership cannot tell people what religious behaviors to have, but they can create a universal ethical guidance. Many people might think of ethics as common sense and may not take it seriously. Sometimes we need reinforcement like ethics training to illustrate what right and wrong look like, and hope people will do the right thing intuitively. I believe everyone has their own ethical and moral values that they follow. For me, my ethical and moral values are to have justice in order to treat everyone equally or equitable treatment, compassion towards others, and improve working skills with others. Often we may think we can readily distinguish between right and wrong, but it can be a lot harder than anticipated. For instance, one way to treat everyone equally in my unit means no favoritism. In order to prevent favoritism, everyone needs to take special precaution of his or her action. If a leader realized or suspected that he or she is showing favoritism, I would challenge that individual to seek help from other leaders or professionals. This is not what the military teaches, we want our leaders who make ethical decision because we have read and understood the Army doctrine. If we have to ask our boss every time there was a question of ethics, then nothing would get accomplished. Ethics training creates standard to illuminate what right and wrong looks like. Often in times, we draw our decision depends on our ethic belief and situation depended. There are no best ways to solve an ethic problem because every situation may be different. That is why we often need to reinforce what we believe is important to us and that includes having equitable treatment among ourselves, be sincere towards others, and challenge ourselves to learn to work with others that are different. The word “Ethics” has its root in the Greek word ‘ethos’, which means character, spirit and attitude of a group of people or culture. Ethics is defined in the Concise Oxford Dictionary as: a system of moral principles, by which human actions may be judged good or bad or right or wrong, and the rules of conduct recognized in respect of a particular class of human actions.
Warrior ethos without military ethics leads to acts of crime, misconduct, and ethical breaches. On the one hand, fighting spirit is a central piece of combat power. In ancient times, the Spartans cultivated their culture of aggressiveness and competition to defeat their enemies. Soldiers do the same. That is what the US soldier’s creed is all about: “I am an expert and I am a professional. I stand ready to deploy, engage, and destroy, the enemies of the United States of America in close combat.” US soldiers are ready to fight, both mentally and physically. Mental toughness, aggressiveness, and competitive spirit have led generations of soldiers to success. This fighting spirit is necessary.
In A Tactical Ethic, Moral Conduct in the Insurgent Battlespace, author Dick Couch addresses what he believes to be an underlying problem, most typical of small units, of wanton ethical and moral behavior partly stemming from the negative “ethical climate and moral culture” of today’s America (Couch, D., 2010, p. 15). In chapter one, he reveals what A Tactical Ethic will hope to accomplish; that is identify the current ethics of today’s military warriors, highlight what is lacking, and make suggestions about what can be done to make better the ethical behavior of those on the battlefield and in garrison. He touches on some historic anecdotes to highlight the need for high ethics amongst today’s military warriors as well as briefly mentions
Ethics refers to a system of moral standards that guide the decision for human conduct of what is right and wrong based on everyday life situations, usually in terms rights, obligations, benefits, fairness, or virtue. Ethics is used as a formal guideline for conducting business in order to minimize pain to the greater number of people as a whole. The principles of ethics come from the knowledge and understanding of the word of God, the Bible. It tells us how we ought to think and behave toward one another considering first, how we want to be treated. For instance, we have the right to freedom of speech as long as we don’t insult the integrity of others. In addition, God gives us examples for how make right decisions and warns of those to avoid. Knowing this, that if we have love in our hearts first, for our heavenly father then we’ll have compassion for our fellow mankind to behave ethically.
Ethics is the standard that are set by a person or organizations based from their beliefs, the values they hold, moral rules they have that helps them make the right or wrong decision, how to act when confronted with a moral dilemma. Setting an ethical standard and a set of rules is critical to having healthy employees, customers, and ultimately a healthy organization.

Ethical leadership is a term that has become very commonplace today. Ethics are moral principles that can be used to help guide peoples decisions. We are all different and therefore our beliefs and opinions differ. There are many ethical theories, and according to Panza and Potthast (n.d.) the following are some that are widely used. Virtue ethics is one theory which states that personality is the most important thing. Living an ethical life, acting right, requires that one develops and demonstrates the quality of courage, compassion, wisdom, and temperance. It also requires that greed, jealousy, and selfishness is avoided. Utilitarianism states that the amount of happiness and suffering created by a person’s actions is what matters the most. As a result, acting rightly includes maximizing the amount of happiness and minimizing the amount of suffering around you. At times you may need to break some of the traditional moral rules to achieve such an outcome. Kantianism is another theory which highlights the principles behind actions rather than an actions results. It states that it requires to be motivated by good principles that treats everyone with respect. If you’re motivated by good principles, you overcome your animal instinct and act ethically. Another ethical theory is the Contract theory, which suggest that ethics should be thought of as terms of agreements between people. It suggests that doing the right thing means obeying agreements set by members rather than those of society. For this theory ethics isn’t necessarily about character, consequences, or principles. The last theory I’m going to mention is Care ethics. Care ethics focuses on ethical attention on relationships before other factors. Ethics deals with actions with adequate standard of attitudes, behavior that is pleasing to the people or organizations. Every job has a code of ethical conduct that is supposed to be is followed. It is very necessary to understand that ethical rules must apply and obey with basis of what is right and wrong which is written in the law. That is why there are professions that have organizations or associations which have the method of ethical conducts or standard.

They are the principles or standards of behaviour of ones judgement of what is conceived as important in life.
