She examines this and tries to associate it with her own views of marriage. She then examines the time and money invested by men and women into family and being a couple. Being a social policy analyst, naturally Lewis examined what the role of private law and family policy should be in terms of intimate relationships. In another study (panel) conducted of household Britain (Scott 1997), it was found that the case of individualism taking over is not popular. Although there were couple cohabitating, the study found that these couples still valued family time and family members. By analyzing the data, the study concluded that family was still central in people’s lives; starting a family was still a priority to most of the respondents. Finally, the importance of family varied by gender and age – men being less attached to family and younger people being more self-centered. Lewis makes a very good point in acknowledging the fall of marriage post-19th century by pointing towards the marriage and divorce culture in the US and Western Europe. Lewis makes a point that children are the ones who lose in this occurrence, and a study by Wallerstein, Lewis, & Blakeslee (2000) tells the same story

Marriage is a commitment that seems to be getting harder to keep. The social standards placed on an individual by society and influenced by the media inevitably lead some to consider divorce as a “quick-fix” option. “Have it your way” has become a motto in the United States. It has become a country without any consideration of the psychological effects of marriage and divorce. The overwhelmingly high divorce rate is caused by a lack of moral beliefs and marital expectations.
According to recent statistics, there are more divorces now than ever before. At the rate things are going, the divorce rate may soon surpass the marriage rate. There are many reasons for such a high divorce rate, but one of the main ones is that people do not realize what they are getting themselves into when they marry. Couples do not realize that marriage is a job that must be worked at continuously in order for it to go well. Because many couples marry for the wrong reasons, a breakdown in communication results, which leads to a couple's growing apart. This process, all too often, ends in divorce.
Every year approximately 2.4 million marriages occur.Out of those,2.1 millionwill file for divorce in the United States. These marriage and divorce rates have significantly increased since the years past(Coltrane and Adams, 364).According to Schoen, in the 1950’s, 15 out of 1,000 marriages ended in divorce. In the 1970’s, the rates of divorcedoubled, increasing to 40 per 1,000 marriages. Currently, the rate of marriages resulting in divorce remains the same. Most marriages are ending within seven years ofthemarriage for multiple different reasons. Sociologists haveestablisheddivorce as a social problem from the rise in divorcerates due to the early year of marriages (2006).
"A family is a small social group of people related by ancestry or affection, who share common values and goals, who may live together in the same dwelling, and who may participate in the bearing and raising of children. They have a physical or emotional connection with each other that is ongoing" (Vissing, 2011) and is the foundation of all societies. They can be formed by a grouping of father-mother-children or even more complicated combination of relatives. In the primary stage of family life in the United States, everyone from every generation lived together in one house. Subsequently, the idea of traditional family evolved and a married couple with children is at present, often called the traditional family. There are many types of families; however, this paper will focus on the traditional family. It will describe how the functionalist perspective, conflict perspective, and the interactionism theory apply to the sociological institution known as a family. It will explain some of the similarities and differences between the sociological theories in regards to families and how they affect the family members.
In the United States today, the statistics for the divorce rate in America is one divorce approximately every 36 seconds; that is nearly, 2,400 divorces per day, 16,800 divorces per week, and 876,000 per year. On average on a daily basis, 6,100 marriages occur every day and roughly 2.23 million a year. So from these statistics we can see that a little less than half of the marriages end in divorce each year; therefore this essay is going to address the negative and positive effects of marriage and divorce and how it affects a family and a household.
From the past to present, people all over the world have determined to live together, which is called “get marriage” in another word, so that they depend on for living each other. Nevertheless, some couples are unable to maintain their relationship; therefore they choose divorce, which is one of the solutions to cope with problems between husband and wife. Furthermore, most people think carefully before they get marriage. However, the divorce rates trend to continually increase nowadays, thus it might be argued that divorces can be taken place easier than the past. There are three main causes of divorce: changing woman’s roles, stress in modern living and lack of communication, which are highlighted below.
To thoroughly elaborate on the institution of family we most look at the family as it was before and how much it has changed over time. Throughout the years we are recognizing that the family is slowly being replaced by other agents of socialization. Families in the past consisted of a mother and a father and most times children. We are, as many societies a patriarchal society; men are usually the head of the households. This has always been considered the norm.
