“I love him that's plain, I love him, I love him. ... That love is a stone round my neck; I'm going with it to the bottom, but I love that stone and can't live without it.” (Chekhov, The Cherry Orchard). This statement, made by an [the] obvious romantic Lubov, allows the audience to clearly define just what Romanticism really is. Being a romantic in the late 1800’s meant more than to love (abundantly), it meant to live for love. Often times in today’s society, individuals speak on how love is blinding or how it could cause ones to (walk) in the wrong direction (down the wrong path). Reflecting back on the details of human history, a great portion of the world had a certain concept about the connection between love and life. Chekov’s family, childhood experiences, and acquaintances he met while growing up became great influences within his future writing career. Chekov managed to utilize his positive as well as negative experiences to develop more natural, realistic plotlines for his characters to follow. For example, his grandfather was a serf whom worked on Vladimir Grigorievitch Tchertokov’s estate before purchasing his freedom from servitude in the year 1841. Serf characters can be seen in his production of The Cherry Orchard. His father was a grocer whom had to close his store due to financial ruin in the year 1867. Furthermore, the Yegorovitch family’s home and hous...

Romanticism was a reaction to the Enlightenment as a cultural movement, an aesthetic style, and an attitude of mind (210). Culturally, Romanticism freed people from the limitations and rules of the Enlightenment. The music of the Enlightenment was orderly and restrained, while the music of the Romantic period was emotional. As an aesthetic style, Romanticism was very imaginative while the art of the Enlightenment was realistic and ornate. The Romanticism as an attitude of mind was characterized by transcendental idealism, where experience was obtained through the gathering and processing of information. The idealism of the Enlightenment defined experience as something that was just gathered.
The expression Romantic gained currency during its own time, roughly 1780-1850. However, the Romantic era is to identify a period in which certain ideas and attitudes arose, gained the idea of intellectual achievement and became dominant. This is why , they became the dominant mode of expression. Which tells us something else about the Romantic era which expression was perhaps everything to do with them -- expression in art, music, poetry, drama, literature and philosophy. Romantic ideas arose both as implicit and explicit criticisms of 18th century Enlightenment thought. For the most part, these ideas were generated by a sense of being unable to deal with the dominant ideals of the Enlightenment and of the society that produced them. Which characterized Transendinlalism very differently from that of Romanticism. The difference of Transendinlalism was that it was a literary and philosophical movement, associated with Ralph Waldo Emerson and Margaret Fuller, asserting the existence of an ideal spiritual reality that transcends the empirical and scientific and is knowable through intuition. However, the Romantics thought differently because they that, that romanticism was an artistic and intellectual movement originating in Europe in the late 18th century and characterized by a heightened interest in nature, emphasis on the individual's expression of emotion and imagination, departure from the attitudes and forms of classicism, and rebellion against established social rules and conventions. The Romantics felt all the opinions of the Enlightment were fraught with dangerous errors and oversimplification. Romanticism may then be considered as a critique of the inadequacies of what it held to be Enlightened thought. The d...

During the Romanticism period nature was considered powerful, changing constantly, and there was a profound belief that there are endless possibilities for mankind to change the world. Of all the emotions celebrated by the Romantics the most popular was love. However, Romanticism should not be confused with romantic love in a sense of candle lit dinners and receiving love notes, flowers and boxes of candy. Instead, it was about a love for nature and beauty, and a sense of all human beings having a connection, empathy was heightened for others in which brought on feeling the pains of other people in the world. To the Romantics love, in which invokes compassion, was a natural God-given right. Back in the Age of Enlightenment people felt marriage depended more on the basis of survival, they would tolerate unhappiness for the sake of living; however, for the romantics love was the necessary foundati...

Literature is a creative art by the literary artist. Literature is the expression of the things in the innovative way. According to C.S. Lewis, “Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it. It enriches the necessary competencies that daily life requires and provides; and in this respect, it irrigates the deserts that our lives have already become”. Literature is the reflection of the human experience; it defines the life experience of several ages. Literature reflects the world of reality as well as the imagination and our love. Literature can be classified according to the historical periods, genres, and political influences. The great literary work of art can withstands over the time. In present scenario, the literature was to entertain the readers and those values of withstanding by time was discarded. The function of literature has come to express the hopes and aspiration of society. Present literature works as a social propaganda, and throws the light on the societal problems which affect the people. It is the mirror of culture and ritual practice. Its goal
