The story A Worn Path by Eudora Welty tells the journey of an elderly black lady by the name of Phoenix Jackson. Who takes a journey from her house to the nearest town in order to get medicine for her grandson that is sick due to him swallowing lye. She doesn’t mind having to go the long trip to and from the doctor’s office in the next town because of the love she has for her grandson. Love can make you do things that no matter your age or the obstacles put in your way just insist and overcome them. For example phoenix had many obstacles put in front of her but she found a way through it even with her old age.
An obstacle she had to overcome was when on her way down the hill her dress was caught by a bush right before she got to the bottom of the hill. Her response was “Thorns, you doing your appointed work. Never want to let folks pass, no sir. Old eyes thought you was a pretty little green bush.” Instead of getting mad but to figure a way out so she trembled all over until she was free. The next obstacle was her old age not allowing her to have a lot of energy along with her mind playing tricks on her. Example she sat down to rest and she saw a little boy who brought her a plate with a slice of marble cake but when she reached for it only her hand was in the air. Also Phoenix says, “Seems like there is chains bout my feet, time I get this far, she said, in the voice of argument old people keep use with themselves.” After overcoming that obstacle she then had to climb a barbed-wire fence showing her will to get the medicine as well as her love for her grandson. She then ran into a big dog that came at her causing her to fall into a ditch. She received help on this obstacle by a passing hunter.

A Worn Path shows readers that family is the most important thing everyone should go beyond there limitations if it’s necessary to help a family member in need. Phoenix never gives up hope she always stayed positive knowing that was the only way that she would be able to get to the doctor’s office. The love she had for the grandson was all she needed in order to push herself through each obstacle in her path. The love of a grandma is truly shown, and tested within A Worn Path. Showing me that when the time comes anything is possible no matter your age or the obstacles put in your way just insist and overcome them.
