Although I am not the best writer, I have come a long way and improved immensely from my first essay “Where is the Line Drawn?” at the beginning of the semester to my last essay “Differences” towards the end of the semester. If it was possible I would have loved to compare my very first essay from semester 1 to my last essay in semester 2 to show the extraordinary change and my writing journey.
Throughout the entire 2nd semester I have acquired some new writing, reading and analytical skills. Some of the important writing skills I learned are coming up with an arguable thesis, critical thinking and information literacy. Before I did not really have argumentative thesis’s in my writing, which made my papers never really, have a purpose; why am I writing this? I still have trouble every now and again, a comment you left on one of my papers said “good, but express your thesis more boldly, a directly.” I tend to always make my thesis to broad or too narrow when writing my essays. I am more knowledgeable about invention, arrangement, style, and delivery, all in which create a masterful piece of text. A few examples, I have learned to organize and construct my thoughts and ideas clearer. I have been taught to use stronger transitions and focus more on the delivery and content of the body element of essays. Further, the instructions and advice I have received throughout this term have influenced my understanding of the purpose of writing. My outlook on writing has been modified by shifting my perception of writing from, writing to prove I am a good writer by perceiving it as using “fluffy” or BIG words to impress my audience. I grew to understanding that good writing’s purpose is to engage the writer by mind-striking ideas and arguments, which therefore will prove and title me as a “good writer”.
I never really considered myself an "acceptable" writer. I always would panic after realizing I have to write a paper because I never feel prepared or ready. After my semester of English 1102, I realized that I can spot good points for my argument, but I had difficulty analyzing them in terms of my thesis. My thesis and topic sentences were not my strong suits because I either don't dig deep enough, or I panic and add so much to my thesis/topic sentence that the syntax and diction is awkward and confusing. I would spend hours trying to fix these errors because of writer's block and anxiety; however, as the semester kept going, I found it to be easier to fix the errors in my paragraph by asking myself how to improve my paper and asking my peers
My development as a writer has flourished throughout this semester. The first week of this fall semester started out with writing responses from our readings in the textbook. Looking back through and analyzing my reading responses at the semester to now; I noticed a substantial improvement in not only my grammar skills, but also my summarizing, and in-depth studying of writing adeptness. Another way I have progressed this semester is the vocabulary of my writing has significantly improved and become more scholarly. Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness.
The following final drafts, drafts, notes, and peer review letters represent my growth as a writer in the span of one semester. I learned quite a bit about myself and the things i can do to improve my writing and the methods of doing proper research in order to write a proper research essay. Though i have seen an improvement within these essays, i feel i still have much to practice upon.
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics. As a result my research papers and essays did not flow as smoothly from one passage to the next. Furthermore, I was unaccustomed with the precise procedures used when writing an essay. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic. From an early age I was aware that teachers treated students differently based on race, ethnicity, class, and gender. From K-12, I attended racially, ethnically, and economically diverse public schools. Some of my classmates’ parents had Ivy League educations and others were had little education. Interestingly, among my classmates, there were both educated people and uneducated people on welfare. The teachers’ prejudices were always clear though; the upper-class, white, blonde-haired kids were the favorites, and the children of color were always the ones in trouble. My attitude overall this semester has changed towards the writing process, as before I only use to pay attention to developing my three main ideas. Now I give attention to throws cited, grammar, structure and organization of the paragraphs. Essay’s overall presentation, problem solution and convincible factors lead to a good essay. This essay reflects level of difficulty or ease to produce essays, all the possible tasks and processes involved, and writing process of specific essay.
No writer is the same, and no writer is perfect. As you start writing and learning new and different things in life you develop as a writer. Being in AP Language and Composition after each assignment I learned new things about me as a writer. I learned the effort it takes to make a really good essay. Prior to this class i would just whip up an essay and not really edit and revise it- it was basically one draft with small edits and turned in. Whereas with this class i learned to make a worthwhile reading of an essay by taking time on each paper and getting other people 's perspectives to see what is good and what is lacking. This was achieved by, utilising and expanding my knowledge and achieving an Australian Underwater Federation (AUF) Snorkelling Certificate. This certificate opens a wider spectrum of jobs opportunities and improves your resume significantly if wanting to become an Aquatics or Snorkelling Instructor, or a Marine Biologist Teacher.
My abilities at the beginning of the semester were very simple, that were based on the material that I have taken in the bridge program and writing 101. They were mainly about the skills on how to start an academic essay. One of the challenges that I faced at the beginning of the semester was the fact that last essay I wrote was a year ago (fall 2015). Another issue was when I faced an argumentative essay I realized that my brainstorming were good, but I lacked in delivering it to build up my draft. To illustrate, choosing the topic (postmodern architecture) was not a problem, however, due to the fact that the topic was too narrow and I didn’t have enough background about it. To find a way to support my ideas I have done a lot of researches.
During the first essay that our class had to write, things like my thesis was strong and focused. In the second essay that our class wrote, I was able to notice the way we are supposed to document sources and how to site the sources we use in our essays or in general. Slowly but surely, I finally understood how to cite sources correctly and what was needed for information within the citation. Throughout this semester here at CSU I have learned a lot of different material, but I think I this class have taught me the most valuable information. As an English major it is very important that I do my best at writing and thanks to my Intro to Writing Studies class I feel even more confident as a writer. The Trimble book was my most valuable source this semester. Not only was this book helpful for this course, but I used it for my other courses as well and I also plan on using it in the near future. This semester in this course has not only taught me new ideas, but has refreshed my memory on material that I have covered once before and have forgotten as the years went by.
Comparative essays are so useful because it allows the writer to compare two or more subjects and analyze them objectively.
