Progressivism
My personal philosophy of education is most closely related to progressivism, which is a school of thought advocating that truth is determined by function. Progressivism is an educational philosophy focused on providing students with the skills and knowledge necessary not only to survive but also to succeed in a contemporary and competitive society. William James and John Dewey are accredited for developing the characteristically American philosophy of education that is progressivism.
As the name suggests, progressivism is a philosophy that is adaptable for society’s current state. It is a philosophy that promotes education aimed at helping students to develop the kind of problem solving skills that will enable them to function successfully in a competitive society. Progressivism curriculum has a strong emphasis on problem solving and analysis, for these skills are invaluable in today’s society. Progressivism is a political orientation that emerged when education began to take priority over religion in America. Universities began to teach courses and subjects independent of religious input. The educated youth began to analyse society and began to feel that society as a whole was made up of people who were either poor foreigners or the newly rich businessmen who they saw as lacking in culture. The youth wanted to see more equality in wealth and more appreciation of culture and respect in society (Kuklick 2009). From these ideals the progressive movement spread to those who supported its initial ideas. Those who aligned themselves with progressivism found themselves in the middle politically, between those who were happy with the ways things were and socialists. Those who were progressive wanted more equal and fair politics in society and wanted to end the boss system where the wealthy would use corruption and bribery to maintain their power. It implies a philosophy which welcomes innovations and reformers in the political, economic, and social order. At first, progressivism began as a social reform but later it became a political reform. People were moving away from the farms and into the already over-populated cities. Also, there were immigrants in abundance from Europe who, as well, populated the cities. It was the immigrants who introduced progressivism, which was popular in Europe due to the Enlightenment. Progressives sought to bring about a positive change through social organization and economic justice. Progressives thought that the many issues in society (poverty, violence, racism, etc…) could be properly addressed by providing a good education and a safe environment.
Sociological imagination is the understanding of relationships between self and society. Anything that happens in a person’s life is an effect of something that has happened in society. Understanding sociological imagination will allow people to see how society can shape a person’s life. People feel that their failures are their own fault when in reality it is caused by what happens in society. Progressivism is an ideology that is based on the notion that economic, social and historical progression is inevitable. The notion of progress assumes the role of a movement toward the idea of some sort of perfectibility of human nature and society. While progressives believe that progression is inevitable, they still understand that political, economic and social reform are necessary means of achieving it. The philosophical founders of progressive ideas include Francis Bacon, Hegel, Marx, Comte, Rousseau, Condorcet, Bentham, Mill, and Edward Bellamy. A sociological imagination is when one can consider everyday life from the perspective of a sociologist. For example, when someone goes to a sporting event, their purpose is to cheer on their favorite team and to have fun. In reality, though, they are participating in collective effervescence. This is when a large group of people, with different backgrounds, come together to all support the same event. A person with a sociological imagination would understand and think about what sporting events are actually representing. This imagination is primarily a way for people to think about the world in a different and exciting way.
I think it is extremely important that students maintain their individuality all throughout childhood and carry it through them into adulthood. Both of these philosophies promote individuality. Progressivism promotes individuality because it encourages the student to come up with conclusions on their own, in ways that makes most sense to them so they can grasp the content in the best way possible. This provokes deeper, more meaningful ways of thinking. Existentialism is important for students because it encourages them to be unique in thought and action, to embrace who they are deep down inside and to not let their individuality fade as they grow older. I believe that these two philosophies are the most important ones when it comes to the student’s individual uniqueness, which can bring such great things into this world. Not every child thinks the same, so not every child learns the same. Consequently, if we allow children to learn as they wish, as long as they put towards an effort, their minds will grow to a greater degree than if we teach one specific way to teach each
The first and most important of the three formal educational philosophies that have been major influences on the formation of my own philosophy is progressivism. Progressivism is based on the belief that people learn best from what they consider to be relevant to their every day lives. In other words, students learn best from personal experience, hands-on experiments, and from interacting in groups with those around them. However, for these small groups to be entirely effective, they must be chosen at random; basing the groups on race, gender, sexuality, or social background will defeat their main purpose.
All six of the major educational philosophies Perennialism, Progressivism, Essentialism, Existentialism, Social Reconstruction, and Behaviorism are in my opinion feasible in the classroom. However, I have chosen Essentialism as the primary philosophy I would like to employ in my classroom for several reasons. Although I think all six would result in learning, which is the primary purpose of education, I think that Essentialism is superior to the other five for my classroom. I feel this way because it embraces the purpose or original goal of public education, it allows lessons to be gauged to all different learning styles, and finally because essentialism employs methods of teaching and discipline that I believe work exceptionally well with my content specialization.

Another theory of progressivism is that of a democratic system. Students will fare better in life if they are exposed to the ideas and cultures of different ethnicities and personalities early.
Progressivism is a theory of education that encourages students to think on their own and create their own ideas to test out. In order, for the students to figure out the answer to their new idea or concept learned with hands on experiences used in the classroom. The progressivist named John Dewey believed that people learned most when their past experiences related to the concepts they are currently learning. This allows the students to connect with their experience that happened in life to the new stuff they would currently learn in the classrooms. In which, the students would engage more to learn about the new ideas or knowledge. Progressivists also believed that education should allow students to learn from each other to create a better society. The teacher’s role in the classroom is to keep in check that the students are on task but not under mind their new ideas while doing an experiment. The methods they use are student focused or orientated such as discussion, mental modeling. The students can engage with their peers and discuss their new ideas or own opinions with other without any judgement of being wrong. Progressivism is a student centered philosophy that focuses on experiences, opportunities, and values that enhance a student 's learning and life. The role of the teacher is to act primarily as a facilitator of learning, they encourage and guide students to explore and promote individual development. As a future educator I believe it is important to involve students and allow them to take responsibility for their own learning and achieving their goals. My philosophy of education is a combination of essentialism and progressivism . I feel that knowledge can be learned from a textbook, but I also want my students to use other means of knowledge. I fell in certain times, I should be the center of the classroom and other times, the students should be the center. Education is about the students and I am there to guide them through their journey. I think it's important to let children learn by exploring. By doing this, they choose what information is important and should be retained. When it comes to learning, students should always be in the center. The teachers are only there to mentor and improve upon a child's skills. In my mind progressivism with a mix of essentialism is the best philosophy for me to follow.
