Today’s society perceives the female gender as weaker than the male gender. Many Hollywood films portray women needing more guidance in the work place, more protection in social environments, and being not able to compete at the same level as men. Pitch Perfect destroys the stereotype that females are of the weaker sex than men through symbols, musical selections, and the characters through out the film.
Stereotyping that men are superior to women dates back hundreds of thousands of years. “Seeing the world through the eyes of oppressed groups raised new questions about our preconceived notions in many aspects of social reality” (15). The film Pitch Perfect symbolizes females as the oppressed group that seeks to break the traditional female perceptions as seen in other Hollywood films. The traditional Hollywood film portrays men as the superheroes or the one going to a full time job everyday. The masculine character is seen rescuing the damsel in distress while the female character is the one being rescued. Pitch Perfect works through the gender inequality stereotype showed in many films. By addressing both what the traditional gender inequality stereotype is at the beginning of the film to later shifting to the female gender representing a stronger sex is apparent through out the film.
Upon arrival at Barden University, student ambassadors are waiting to greet students. While the male students are seen pushing carts full of luggage, the female students are handing out rape whistles. Pitch Perfect is a twenty-first century Hollywood film that works to break the stereotypical gender inequality displayed in some films. Through female characters, such as Beca and Fat Amy, they do not fall prey to men’s demeaning behavior. With the graduation of one college class at the beginning of the film to the new members of the Barden Bellas, the group evolves such as women stereotypes have. The graduating members of Barden Bellas are a representation of the traditional stereotype. They dress proper and continue tradition the same year to year with little to no change. The new members of the Barden Bellas symbol a generational change. Each member brings something unique to the group and helps them define who they are as a woman. The shift in members of the Barden Bellas can symbol how gender inequality is evolving in Hollywood films.
