Multicultural Counseling
After reading the many articles on the notion of diagnosis and counseling with multicultural/ethnic patients, it has come to my attention that this focus is solely based on stereotypical attitudes. Sure, it can be said that it is important for a therapist to have a background of the patient’s heritage and culture, but doesn’t this necessarily mean that the outlook of the therapist will be put in a box by doing so? I think multicultural competency is a ridiculous way to improve patient-therapist relationships because of several reasons. First off, generalities and race-centralisms only hinder, not improve, the inner workings of a therapy session. Second, there is no real way to test for competency of multicultural issues. So the question of competency cannot be tested and thus should be removed from the criteria of abilities of a therapist. Third, these types of attachments in the learning of diagnosis and therapy only add to stereotypical and racist behavior.
A superior kind of therapeutic relationship depends on both an emotional bond with the therapist and a rational and functioning connection. Both concepts have relevance for multicultural clinical work. I agree that it is important that a therapist explore the ethnic/multicultural background of a patient if and only if the betterment of the patient depends on it. This means that whatever the problem with the patient, it must be of a direct relationship to the culture...
Being culturally aware and knowledgeable is a must when working in any type of healthcare field. In our society today, we have an array of different cultures and making patients feel comfortable and at easy is our primary goal. Diversity training is something that is a must for each healthcare professional and should be the basis of our healthcare education.
Counselors today face the task of how to appropriately counsel multicultural clients. Being sensitive to cultural variables can be conceptualized as holding a cultural lens to human behavior and making allowances for the possibility of cultural influence. However, to avoid stereotyping, it is important that the clinician recognize the existence of within-group differences as well as the influence of the client’s own personal culture and values (Furman, Negi, Iwamoto, Shukraft, & Gragg, 2009). One’s background is not always black or white and a counselor needs to be able to discern and adjust one’s treatment plan according to their client.
Culture can be defined as behaviors exhibited by certain racial, religious, social or ethnic groups. Some factors in which culture may vary include: family structure, education, and socioeconomic status (Kodjo, 2009). Some may think cultural competence is something that has an end point, however, when the big picture is seen, it is a learning process and journey. From the writer’s perspective, the client-therapist relationship can be challenging. Culturally competent therapists must realize that behaviors are shaped by an individual’s culture. Many changes are taking place within the United States cultural makeup. Therapists and healthcare professionals are being challenged to provide effective and sensitive care for patients and their families. This type of culturally sensitive care requires the professional to be open and seek understanding in the patients diverse belief systems (Kodjo, 2009).
For example, the Campinha-Bacote model views cultural competence as an ongoing process that involves the integration of the following constructs: cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, cultural skill, cultural encounters, and cultural desires (Campinha-Bacote, 2002). This model can be implemented into practice as I can recognize my own cultural background to prevent the tendency to impose any biases on another individual’s culture. I can begin to build upon my cultural knowledge by asking questions in a respectful manner to seek information about one’s culture. Most importantly, a desire to want to engage in the process of becoming culturally competent will be a deciding factor for positive patient outcomes. Examples of this desire may include, the willingness to learn how to conduct cultural assessments or a genuine passion to be open and accept differences between cultures. Moreover, it is important to recognize that cultural competency is not an end result, but an ongoing learning process (Campinha-Bacote,
I cannot begin to tell you just how excited we all are. I put in my request for the days off I need and am ready to start Packing!!! Not that I've never gone camping, because I practically lived in a tent for about three summers, but I have never gone camping as a mom before! Things are so very different in this stage of my life then they were before. Now I am aware that I am going to need diapers for my son, and clothes but the specifics were harder to plan for them then they are normally for just me. For me, my daughter who is four and potty trained, seems to be the lesser of the two evils so I decided to start with her. Knowing the way the weather tends to change along the great lakes I know she is going to need a full suit case! I grabbed two pair of comfy jeans, and three pair of shorts to start, a couple of tank tops, short sleeves and two sweaters! I grabbed a light sweater to keep the sun off her shoulders and a heavy one for the evenings around the fire pit! (Roasting Marshmallows is not as fun when you're cold! We are also planning on taking a trip to the lake, so I know she is going to need her suit and a towel and tennis shoes and sandals. With the main events up there including a once a year Flee Market and carnival (yes, in the middle of the woods!) I know she is going to desperately need lots of sun block, and bug spray. A Hair brush, tooth brush and lots of socks and undies, and some pull up's for bedtime and we're ready to hit the road. My little guy is a couple years younger than her and needs much more. The clothes will be packed the same way with the addition of diapers and wipes. He gets the biggest bag in the house even thought his clothes are the smallest! He gets two pair of shoes like Sissy, extra socks (on account of he likes to take them off and hide them!), little swimmers for the lake and his trunks. I pack up the sippy cups, and a few of his favorite toys. Since we
The healthcare system within America reflects increasing numbers of cultural diversity and awareness. According to Holloway (2004), cultural awareness is defined as the deliberate, cognitive process by which health care providers become appreciative of and sensitive to the values, beliefs, practices, and problem solving strategies of the clients’ cultures. Cultural awareness include an examination of one’s personal biases. In order to understand cultural diversity, individuals must strive to acknowledge the prejudices they may already hold toward different cultures. On the other hand, cultural competence is a process through which health professionals can integrate their knowledge and skills to improve culturally effective interactions with clients (Tjale & Villiers, 2004).
This new Hard bop style also heavily incorporated aspects of gospel music, with many tracks including the plagal (“amen”) cadence, the progression from chord IV to I. This gospel influence is ever-present in Horace Silver’s 1955 song, “The Preacher”. It is important to appreciate that this masterpiece lived on despite nearly being unrecorded. According to Alfred Lion, the executive at Horace Silver’s record label “Blue Note”, “... it was too old timey, that no one would go for it” (Rosenthal). As the first successful song produced by Horace Silver, it inspired other Jazz musicians to take interest in hard bop.
Michael and The Jackson 5 had a self-titled cartoon show. Gordy did not want the Jacksons to do their own moves and music. After having tensions with Gordy, the Jacksons signed a deal with Epic Records. Michael fired his father as his manager. While filming in The Wiz, Quincy Jones became Michaels new father. Quincy Jones was a jazz musician, composer, and bandleader. Michael Jackson became the biggest black artists ever created. Off the Wall had the most cohesive atmosphere of any song. It sold more than five million copies by 1985. Jackson expected Off the Wall to win a Grammy. It only received one honor. Michael was despondent and cried about the outcome. Around the time Off the Wall was released, Michael said in some interviews that he was lonely and would sit in his bedroom and cry. Michael’s biggest song was Thriller. Thriller was a piece of art and a work of intimate exposure. Thriller was the number one hit on Billboard for thirty-seven weeks. Michael was the first artist to generate four top ten hits on the Billboard. The song garnered thirteen Grammy nominations. In the1984 Grammy Awards, Jackson won eight awards including Album of the Year and Record of the Year. Along with the Jacksons, Michael announced that he would be going on a nationwide
In today’s society where an abundance of resources exists, social workers are often the entry point for people to access services. Therefore, it is imperative for social worker professionals to have a clear understanding of themselves in relation to the client from a cultural perspective. While the social work profession has always focused on social justice and oppression, it wasn’t until the civil rights movement that there was a conscious shift in the social work pedagogy to focus the social service practice on race, racism, and training the workforce in cultural competences. Later in the mid 1980’s, the tone of cultural competence would shift from race and racism to a more inclusive language, which includes a more robust list of all types
broad range of clients. Awareness and respect for diversity and multicultural values facilitates good communication and therapeutic relationship.
In addition, some clients may want to explore their multiple identities and how they position themselves in a world that is highly influenced by culture. Nonetheless, as I read this question, I realized that there is no right or wrong answer. Similarly, there is no right or wrong reason to come to therapy. Therapy is for the individuals who want help regardless of a reason or problem. It is possible that some clients may not have a problem but that is not for the therapist to judge. Instead, the therapist must remain curious and explore the client’s perception of the problem or problems in order to identify unique outcomes and help build preferred
In the other hand, “simply recognizing and accepting cultural diversity is insufficient to attain cultural competency in health care”, as cited by Edelman (2014, p.26). It is important that before we get to know and understand other cultures, we are able to recognize our own beliefs and values, and more importantly, that we do not attempt to influence others with our own culture. Every person is unique and it is essential for us to be aware of that so we can meet their own needs and expectations while providing exceptional
Main Point: What defines an addiction? According to Psychology Today, “Addiction is a condition that results when a person ingests a substance…. or engages in an activity….that can be pleasurable but the continued use/act of which becomes compulsive and interferes with ordinary life responsibilities, such as work, relationships, or health.” This can range anywhere from drug use to eating disorders, to gambling, to even texting in today’s generation. Shocking to say the least, especially when most people do not even know they are addicted or are an addict until they realize this definition.
Cool jazz was developed largely in Los Angeles and the surrounding West Coast areas. Unlike hard bop, cool jazz was more restrained, soft, and controlled. It was generally understated and was heavily influenced by classical music; utilizing the flute, French horn, and tuba. It was also different from bebop and hard bop in that it relied on prewritten arrangements. Some important people to recognize would be trumpeter Miles Davis, pianist Dave Brubeck, and saxophonist Gerry Mulligan. Hard bop was the antithesis of cool jazz as it was characterized by a loud, fun, loose style that was often improvised and complex in form. Hard bop was considered a return to the music’s roots in blues music, making it more Afro-centric. There were two sides
Make sure you have the proper camping cookware like pots, pans, spoon, fork, etc. Plan your meals and pack all the required ingredients. Remember the salt and pepper and condiments that you want to use. It's not a bad idea to practice preparing your camping food at home.
