Substance Use and Abuse Among Children and Teenagers During the past several years, there has been a renewed national concern about drug abuse, culminating in the current "war on drugs." In this review, we emphasize that even though child or teenage drug use is an individual behavior, it is embedded in a sociocultural context that strongly determines its character and manifestations. Our focus is on psychoactive substances both licit (cigarettes and alcohol) and illicit (e.g., cannabis and cocaine). We feel that it is critical to draw a distinction between use and abuse of drugs and to do so from a multidimensional perspective that includes aspects of the stimulus (drug), organism (individual), response, and consequences. Our selective review of substance use and abuse among children and adolescents covers epidemiology (patterns and extent of drug use), etiology (what generates substance use), prevention (how to limit drug use), treatment (interventions with drug users), and consequences (effects and outcomes of youthful drug use). In this abbreviated review, we selectively examine the recent literature and current status of substance use and abuse among children and adolescents. Our focus is on psychoactive substances both licit and illicit, including cigarettes, alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, and other drugs. We examine the use and abuse of substances by children and teenagers from five perspectives: epidemiology, etiology, prevention, treatment, and consequences (see Rogers, 1987 , for additional overviews and references). The United States is a drug culture. Drugs are used commonly and acceptably to wake up in the morning (coffee or tea), get through the stresses of the day (cigarettes), and relax in the evening (alcohol). The Marlboro Man and the Virginia Slims woman are widely seen models, and licit drugs are pushed to remedy all of the ills one may face–stress, headaches, depression, physical illness, and so on. Children face a monumental task of sorting out the many images and messages regarding both licit and illicit drugs. Adolescents are quite adept at spotting hypocrisy and may have difficulty understanding a policy of "saying no to drugs" when suggested by a society that clearly says "yes" to the smorgasbord of drugs that are legal as well as the range of illicit drugs that are widely available and used. A few words are in order on the distinction between use and abuse of drugs. This differentiation is critical to such diverse topics as societal justification for limiting access to drugs (whether By legal or other means) or for considering psychological intervention.
The Roman Empire was strong for a time. It was founded on geography, family values, military strength, and wise leadership. It flourished because of social, economic, political, military and religious strengths. However, when the very things that make a civilization flourish start to decline, the civilization will also lead to a downfall.
About one out of five 10th graders and about 1 out of four high school seniors used marijuana in the past month (Facts for Teens, 1). It is the second most popular drug among teens in the US (Encarta, 1). Teens, ages 12-17, that use marijuana weekly are nine times more likely than non-users to experience with illegal drugs and alcohol (Fed. Study, 1). More 13 & 14 year olds are using drugs, fifteen pe...
The Roman Empire faced many problems in the third century. Many of these problems came within the empire and other forces that were outside the empire. The only thing that seemed to aid in the holding of this great empire was drastic economic, political, and military reforms, which looked as essential elements that would prevent the collapse of the empire. Large groups of historians come to terms with the idea that at the end of emperor Marcus Aurelius in the 161–180 A.D marked the end of the romans two centuries of prosperity and peace. This period is known as the Pax Roman. Other rulers that followed from this period had very little or no idea on how to deal with the crises that this giant nation was facing. As a result this rulers lead to the fall and decline of the Roman Empire.
One significant reason for the decline of the Roman Empire was political instability because poor leadership weakened and confused the community of Rome. During the 50-year period of 235 to 285 CE, there were twenty-two emperors with ‘assassinations’ as a frequent reason of deaths. In return, the government was unstable and could not be trusted. Also, as an enemy sight, the empire was weakened and vulnerable to invasions. In one sentence, frequent deaths of emperors led the corruption and an unstable government, which resulted in the decline of ancient Rome.
The empire appeared to be on the brink of falling apart, as a result of civil wars as barbarian tribal confederacies devastated the empire from Gaul to the Black Sea, as well as Spain and Greece being looted by barbarian war bands. A revived Persian kingdom overthrew the Parthian kingdom in the East, and those same rulers looked to revive the great empire of earlier centuries. Persia, at Rome’s expense, was ravaging provinces of the Middle East. With these events in process, the entire empire appeared on the brink of falling apart.

For those who are interested in learning about history, the Roman Empire and its civilization were one of the most interesting spotlights in the human history. The Roman Empire existed throughout a hundreds-years timeline, officially since 27 BC under the reign of Emperor Augustus. However, to learn how this great empire rose up, they have to back to the “the early Rome and the Republic” period. In this period, these events happened orderly, from the rise of Rome in the Italian peninsula that led to creating the Roman republic, the conflicts with the Carthage Empire, the conquest of the Mediterranean and it ended with the fall of the Roman Republic.
The Roman Empire originated in 27 BC and quickly became one of the largest and most prosperous empires that has ever set foot on Earth. At its peak, the Roman Empire stretched nearly 3,000 miles from east to west and nearly 2,000 miles from north to south, with its total land area approximately one-half of the United States. However, by 476 AD, the Roman Empire had started to crumble to the ground. There were many causes that had led to the fall of Rome, but one particular cause, out of the rest, contributed most to the fall of Rome. Political problems were the most instrumental in the fall of the Roman Empire. Rome’s enormous empire, inefficient and corrupt leadership, and rivalries over succession to the throne were key political factors that led to the collapse of the Roman Empire.
No one can dispute that the Roman Empire is considered one of the most influential domains in the Western Hemisphere even to this day. The Romans provided many of the foundations to current institutions: language, customs, basis for law, architecture just to name a few. However, if one were to ask when did the Roman Empire fall, most people would think 476 CE, citing the fundamental historical tome on the subject, Edward Gibbons’ The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. However, while the western portion of the Roman Empire ceased to exist when the Germanic chieftain Odoacer forced Romulus Augustulus to abdicate his throne on September 4th, 476 CE, the eastern Roman Empire continued to exist until 1453 CE when the Turks captured Constantinople.
Adolescences in particular can be easily influenced to abusing a drug or multiple drugs. I believe this happens because teens often lack education, live in an environment where drugs are readily available, are peer-pressured and the lack of proper growth of the frontal lobe. Many factors contribute to adolescences experimenting with drugs. As side from being a child, the adolescence stage is of great importance. Healthy habits and activities are supposed to be instilled within this stage of life. The adolescence stage can be very perplexing and what is made into a habit then is easily carried on into adulthood. Our genes act together with our environment to contribute to the addictive behaviors we are motivated to develop. If addiction is left untreated it can ultimately lead to de...
The use of drugs is a controversial topic in society today. In general, addicts show a direct link between taking drugs and suffering from their effects. People abuse drugs for a wide variety of reasons. In most cases, the use of drugs will serve a type of purpose or will give some kind of reward. These reasons for use will differ with different kinds of drugs. Various reasons for using the substance can be pain relief, depression, anxiety and weariness, acceptance into a peer group, religion, and much more. Although reasons for using may vary for each individual, it is known by all that consequences of the abuse do exist. It is only further down the line when the effects of using can be seen.
In today’s society, most people plan their daily meals around their busy schedules. Food plays an important role in our lives and most just rely on fast food because it is quicker and easier. However, devouring fast food is one of the worst choices you can make. In order to maintain proper health and prevent numerous illnesses and diseases, consuming healthy homemade meals is definitely a more ideal choice. According to a recent study, “when people cook most of their meals at home, they consume fewer carbohydrates, less sugar and less fat than those who cook less or not at all – even if they are not trying to lose weight” (Wolfson 2014). Because many people work full time and get home very late, people continue to eat it without being aware of how
Drug abuse has been a hot topic for our society due to how stimulants interfere with health, prosperity, and the lives of others in all nations. All drugs have the potential to be misapplied, whether obtained by prescription, over the counter, or illegally. Drug abuse is a despicable disease that affects many helpless people. Majority of those who are beset with this disease go untreated due to health insurance companies who neglect and discriminate this issue. As an outcome of missed opportunities of treatments, abusers become homeless, very ill, or even worst, death.
Few people deny the dangers of drug use, while many teens are curious about drugs. They should stay away from drugs because drugs affect our health, lead to academic failure, and jeopardizes safety. Drugs are used from a long period of time in many countries. The concentration of drugs has increased from late 1960’s and 1970’s. Drugs can quickly takeover our lives. Friends and acquaintance have the greatest influence of using drugs during adolescence.
(F. Smith, 2012). This means every calories more than 3,000 may affect a human body and gain fat. The body has genes that afford up to 2,400 or 2,035. A recent studies have found people who eat from fast food could gain body mass index (BMI) (Kant, Whitley & Graubard, 2015). A number of calories of fast food have a huge impact of energy (Smith, 2013). Comparing between two children, one of them eat fast food and the other did not. The results show children who eat fast food gain more energy than who did not (Bowman, Gortmaker, Ebbeling, Pereira & Ludwig; 2004). Many people think there is no difference between fast food and food cooked at home. Also they prefer fast food more than home food (Mancino, Todd, Guthrie & Lin; Oct, 2010). Some people like fast food because of fast preparing that take just a moment to be ready to eat and all that at a cheap price. Most people see the preparing food at home is hard and they need time to make a meal, and maybe it is expensive sometimes. Another reason why people choose fast food instead of preparing food at home that each neighborhood has at least two fast food restaurant nearby them (Mancino, et al, October, 2010). For example, children eat at least on hamburger from McDonald’s every day and they consume 12% of harmful calories
