During the era of the weak emperor Taisho (1912-26), the political power shifted from the oligarchic clique (genro) to the parliament and the democratic parties.
In the First World War, Japan joined the Allied powers, but played only a minor role in fighting German colonial forces in East Asia. At the following Paris Peace Conference of 1919, Japan's proposal of amending a "racial equality clause" to the covenant of the League of Nations was rejected by the United States, Britain and Australia. Arrogance and racial discrimination towards the Japanese had plagued Japanese-Western relations since the forced opening of the country in the 1800s, and were again a major factor for the deterioration of relations in the decades preceeding World War 2. In 1924, for example, the US Congress passed the Exclusion Act that prohibited further immigration from Japan.
After WW1, Japan's economical situation worsened. The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and the world wide depression of 1929 intensified the crisis.
During the 1930s, the military established almost complete control over the government. Many political enemies were assassinated, and communists persecuted. Indoctrination and censorship in education and media were further intensified. Navy and army officers soon occupied most of the important offices, including the one of the prime minister.
Already earlier, Japan followed the example of Western nations and forced China into unequal economical and political treaties. Furthermore, Japan's influence over Manchuria had been steadily growing since the end of the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-05. When the Chinese Nationalists began to seriously challenge Japan's position in Manchuria in 1931, the Kwantung Army (Japanese armed forces in Manchuria) occupied Manchuria. In the following year, "Manchukuo" was declared an independent state, controlled by the Kwantung Army through a puppet government. In the same year, the Japanese air force bombarded Shanghai in order to protect Japanese residents from anti Japanese movements.
In 1933, Japan withdrew from the League of Nations since she was heavily criticized for her actions in China.
In July 1937, the second Sino-Japanese War broke out. A small incident was soon made into a full scale war by the Kwantung army which acted rather independently from a more moderate government. The Japanese forces succeeded in occupying almost the whole coast of China and committed severe war atrocities on the Chinese population, especially during the fall of the capital Nanking. However, the Chinese government never surrendered completely, and the war continued on a lower scale until 1945.
In 1937, Japan started a war against China, in search of more resources to expand its empire. In 1941, during World War II, Japan attacked America. This is when the Allies (Australia, Britain etc.) then declared war on Japan. Before long the Japanese started extending their territory closer and closer to Australia and started taking surrendering troops into concentration camps where they were starved, diseased and beaten.
However, amid a global economic crisis, the military came to the fore, and Japan eventually marched down the road to war. With the end of World War II in 1945 Japan put into effect a new Constitution, committed itself to becoming a peace-seeking democracy, and successful in relaunching its economy. In 1956, the nation’s entry into the United Nations was approved.
...ilroad and mining companies had depended on cheap Chinese labor for the majority of their profits and were still unwilling to pay higher wages to white American workers. These businesses increasingly depended on Japanese immigrants to replace the prohibited Chinese workers. As the Japanese came, the Americans told the same story that they had with the Chinese. They were once again arguing that the Japanese were taking their jobs and not absorbing the American culture. The United States took action yet again, by creating an informal treaty with Japan, restricting Japanese immigration to the U.S.
Colorism is described as discrimination based upon the tone of ones skin. Colorism is a global issue that affects an array of people around the world. Although colorism is a worldwide issue, it is unique to African Americans due to the experience of slavery and its long-term psychological effects. African American men and women both experience colorism but the psychological effects are more prominent in women. Women in the black community are greatly affected by colorism starting at a young age. This is due to the history of the European standard of beauty in North America which plays a big role in how it affects their self-image, self-esteem, social status and relationships, and opportunities;
In “High-Tech Tools Help Stores—and Shoppers”, Givens writes, “The more store owners know about their customers’ behavior, the better they can make the shopping experience. They can improve displays, showcase popular merchandise,
The feeling of inferior and superior, rich and poor, high caste and low caste does exist in my society. In my country Nepal, we still have the group of people who call themselves as high castes and they do not touch or eat anything that is touched by so called low caste people. As a result, these people have to change their caste in order to keep themselves away from such discriminations. Regarding rich and poor, we can still see that poor people sometimes ends up working in rich people house and there these poor people are really treated as slaves, even in today 's world. Why? Just because they do not have money or property? Now, after all, these readings and personal thoughts; back then, when Thomas Jefferson wrote "All men are created equal", and he himself had started following this phrase in right way and gave freedom to slaves then today I believe I would not be in this society where these discriminations still
Col·or·ism ˈkələrˌizəm/ NOUN Prejudice or bias against persons on the basis of their skin color or complexion often among persons of the same racial identification. (Webster) Colorism is consequential in today’s society seeing that it is still prestigious in the fast paced world that we live in today. Colorism concerns everyone; it is a controversy that wreaks havoc among African-American, Asian, Latin American, and other communities. We all go through colorism whether or not we realize it. Together, we can become aware, we can address the situation, and we can end the atrocious social battle. To begin the process, we must alter the way media portrays this societal conflict.
For example, While the man, horse, and chameleon all have light brown eyes; the girl is the only character with bright green eyes. Each character is expressing a sense of determination, dominance, and power with their eyes. This sense of determination/dominance/power, is derived from the arched brows and pointed gaze towards the viewer. Also, the characters are displaying what can be assumed as smug faces that are represented with a smirk, the corners of the human characters’ mouths are turned upward, or a grimace, the chameleon is showing an off-center frown and the horse is baring its teeth in a frown. Ellyson and Dovidio wrote an article in which this determination/power is affirmed; “Dimensions used for inferring power are, among others, elevation and erectness of posture, facial expressions and eye contact, relaxation, and how much space a person occupies” (qtd. in Schubert 12). This connects to the second important detail that conflicts towards traditional gender roles: it draws attention to how the girl has green eyes that express power, while the other characters all have brown eyes expressing power. Due to the fact that this is an advertisement–a tool used to persuade–; I can infer that there is a defined point behind her eyes being green –a masculine color–, and the intent behind this masculine color choice was to express how the character does not comply to the traditional genders using a subtle key. The key, is that eyes are the most expressive part of any living being: eyes conveying how someone/something feels, such as power, determination, or confidence; without using words. Schubert points out the connection between men and power/dominance when stating that, “Gender is an important moderator for power and coercion processes. On average, women describe themselves as less dominant and assertive than do men and differ from men in how they exert power” (Feingold and McClelland
For instance, Saks has created a page with all their associates listed on it. On this page there is an “about me” section for each employee that highlights specialties and particular interests of the store’s representative. Not only does this allow customers to better find sales associates who can meet their needs, but it allows salespersons to better advertise themselves. Newly developed tools even allow sales persons to go so far as to directly comment on certain products, so customers can identify what sales representative’s opinions are on particular products.
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) is an organism, such as a plant, animal, or any microorganism who’s had its DNA changed in different ways through genetic engineering that is not natural. It is an organism like every other organism, which produces thousands of proteins, but one or two of them are proteins that were chosen were specifically by humans. It creates unstable combinations of plants, animal, bacterial, and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods. Majority of Americans in the US consume nearly 200 pounds of GMOs each year. 90% of US crops are genetically modified.
One of the major trends in the industry worldwide is online shopping. Online shopping is a form of electronic trade whereby consumers use the internet to buy products that they require, these products are then delivered to their doorstep. During 2013, the number of online users expanded by 17%, to 14 million users, with greater and faster growth expected. Furthermore, this group of online users correlates very closely with the medium- to high-income sector of the population, which appears to have a strong pent-up demand for online services. Online shopping, in developed countries like Australia, is already very prominent and to disruptive to regular brick and mortar retailers, where in Australia around 7% of all sales are done through online retailers. This mega-shift in retail has resulted in retailers moving towards a more omni directional sales environment. Only two food retailers, Pick ‘n Pay and Woolworths, have launched limited online shopping websites, aimed at the higher end of the market. Currently, online retail sales in South Africa represents 0,4% of total retail sales for Woolworths but it grew 40% over the past year. For consumers who can access the internet one huge pro...
Genetically Modified Organisms, also known as GMOs, are one of the most important issues today. Think about all the food you have eaten this past year that contained GMOs. Think about the ice cream that you last ate; some could argue it has a double dose of GMOs; not only does it contain sugar, which is probably genetically modified, but much of the forage that the dairy cows eat that produced the milk for the ice cream is also genetically modified. A genetically modified organism is a new version of a plant or animal that is created by altering genes using biotechnology. According to recent studies, GMOs are perfectly healthy to consume. GMOs are just as safe as normal bred plants.
The number of consumers who tend to shop online is overestimated. Online shopping is portrayed as a fabulous and convenient method however in reality shoppers of the 21st century remain to have a preference of shopping in retail.
Rape of Nanjing was a time when Japanese soldiers would maliciously kill, torture, and steal from the Chinese. The event began around the late 1930s. Before the Rape of Nanjing, Japan attempted to invade Manchuria. Manchuria is rich in coal and iron, which were resources Japan lacked. And so Manchuria was invaded by the Japanese on September 1931. For the same reason, Japan invaded China, at July 1937. The Chinese Nationalist Government moved the capital of China, to Nanjing, in 1928. Many refugees went towards, into the capital to be far away as possible from the approaching Japanese Soldiers. On December 13th, Japanese soldiers entered the city through the Zhongshan and the Pacific gate. The entrance of the Japanese Army ignited the Nanjing
From the customer’s perspective, there is no other reason why they should not use the Internet to shop. Has your mother ever told you she is going grocery shopping and will be back soon, then always takes longer than two hours with a cart full of bags of food that was never on the shopping list? That is because they got caught in store’s marketing strategy. For example, in the front of the stores like Walmart, or Meijer, they display fruits and vegetables so people could walk by and feel fresh and be able to shop longer, or perhaps make them desirable to buy
