When General Rochambeau met General Washington in 1781 to determine their next move against the British, Washington wanted to attack New York City. Rochambeau convinced him that the wiser move was to move South. Word had come from General Lafayette in Virginia that Cornwallis had taken up a defensive position at Yorktown. Cornwallis was situated next to the York River. If they could surround the city by land and cut off Cornwallis' escape route on the river, Washington and Rochambeau would strike an enormous blow to the British forces. Planning for the elaborate campaign began immediately.
French Admiral de Grasse, stationed in the West Indies, would sail with his fleet to the Chesapeake Bay and secure the mouth of the York River. Meanwhile, Washington and Rochambeau would march south to Yorktown and form a semicircle around the city. The plan was simple in concept, but it would take great military skill to execute.
First, Washington and Rochambeau started to march towards New York City. They stationed approximately 2500 men at the American forts near the city to fool the British into believing that Washington's entire force was still there. Then the combined Franco-American army raced south to Virginia. As they marched south, Admiral de Grasse's fleet arrived at the Chesapeake Bay. They defeated the British fleet of Admiral Thomas Graves and won control of the entire bay. More importantly, this meant that they controlled the mouth of the York River and could prevent both Cornwallis' escape and any British communication with Cornwallis. On September 28, 1781, Washington and Rochambeau, along with Lafayette's troops and 3,000 of de Grasse's men, arrived at Yorktown. In all, there were approximately 17,000 men converging on Cornwallis' camp. The stage was set for the final showdown in America's fight for independence.
The combined forces approached Yorktown from the South. The French, under Rochambeau, formed the left flank of the attack, while the American troops, under Washington and Lafayette, approached from the right. The city was soon surrounded and under heavy fire. On October 14, the Franco-American forces captured 2 major British redoubts. Cornwallis' options were running out. He even tried sending blacks infected with smallpox over enemy lines in an attempt to infect the American and French troops. After a futile counterattack, Cornwallis offered to surrender on October 17. On the 19th of October, the papers were signed and he officially surrendered.
In 1776, before the Battle of Brandywine, in what was almost a year long siege, General George Washington and his army managed to drive the British Army out of Boston. However, General William Howe’s British Troops moved south. General Howe and General Washington’s troops met again in the Battle of Long Island. General Howe was victorious and occupied New York City. In the spring of 1777 the British controlled the cities of Quebec and New York, while the Continental Army controlled Philadelphia and Boston. The British plan was to move General Burgoyne’s troops, in Quebec, south, and General Howe’s troops north. This would give the British control of the Hudson Valley and cut New England off from the remaining colonies. The British hoped that this would destroy the American Dream of Independence. However, British Officials in London failed to give direct orders to General Howe to conduct this mission. General Howe decided to pursue his own agenda and capture the city of Philadelphia.
Many suspect that they were with Washington only to maximize the hate on both sides of the battle. They went against Washington’s orders to not be the aggressors. Soon large units of British and American soldiers were sent to settle what should have been small battles. The French however were prepared to fight back and even had the Indians as allies to help with upcoming battles. In July, Braddock’s army which consisted of over 2000 British soldiers rode west with George Washington and came upon 250 plus French soldiers with over 600 Indians allies. Nearly 1000 British were killed, unlike George Washington who was unhurt during the battle was soon promoted to commander of the Virginia army for his bravery. (Roark 146)
On October 9, 1781, General George Washington surrounded General Lord Charles Cornwallis at the Virginia port city of Yorktown with 8,500 American soldiers and around 10,000 French soldiers. The bruised up British army contained only around 8,000 soldiers. The Siege of Yorktown lasted eight days, and Cornwallis had to surrender to American forces. The British loss crushed their southern army and forced them to give up on the war. The surrender of Yorktown could easily be one of the greatest moments in American history. Not only did the surrender signal the end of the war, but it also signaled that independence had been won by the colonies. No longer would the colonies have to answer to Great Britain and the tyrants that ruled it.
With the aid of a French blockade, Washington and his troops were able to siege and capture Yorktown.
The French Navy had decisively defeated the British Navy. Consequently denying escape for the British both by land and sea. On September 29, 1781, the Battle of Yorktown began. As Washington moved his Army closer to the British lines, the British would engage them from their cover and concealed positions. Over the next 6 days, the French and Continental Armies would establish their trenches needed to begin the siege. The French and Continental Armies moved artillery pieces into position to engage the British. On October 9, 1781, the siege of Yorktown against General Cornwallis would officially begin. All French and Continental guns were in place. “Both Army’s had plenty of artillery, cannons and other big guns at Yorktown. The British was equipped with 65 artillery pieces, however, Washington’s Army had 124, almost twice as many” (Fradin, 2013, pg.26). At 1700 hours on October 9, Ready says, “George Washington himself fired the first American cannon toward Yorktown” (Fradin, 2013, pg.35). Both Rochambeau and Washington envisioned the battle would last more than one day. The Continental and French Armies completely surround Yorktown before the British surrendered. Martin found that most of the students, similar to the results of his first study, had taken gap years because of uncertainty of what they were going to do after school. Of these students, most had said that they now knew what they were going to do, and had a clear way to pursue that goal. Having 20% of students taking gap years is substantial, and Martin says that he would not be surprised if this number increased greatly in the near future. This is especially true because of the rising cost of college, and because students are starting to believe that college isn’t worth it and they want to have options for their lives. Every year thousands of students throughout the world spend their last year of high school applying to college to decide what will be the right choice in furthering their education. While a wide variety of students decide to proceed straight into college others would prefer to have a gap year. A gap year is when students take a year off from the school. Students who graduate from high school should take a year off before starting a new chapter in life, therefore the gap year can allow the student to take a break from school, and add excessive time to decide what career to excel in. In the novel ‘Jane Eyre’ by Charlotte Bronte, Jane shows self-confidence throughout the novel by having a sense of self-worth, and a trust in God and her morals. Jane develops her self confidence through the capacity to learn and the relationships she experiences. Although an oppressed orphan, Jane is not totally with confidence, she believes in what is right and shows passion and spirit at an early age. Helen and Miss Temple equips Jane with education and Christians values that she takes on throughout her life. Jane later also blossoms in self confidence under Mr. Rochester’s love and her family, the Rivers and newly discovered wealth. Bronte uses dialogue and 1st person narration to give an insight of the characters for the reader to see what the characters are saying and suggest what they are really thinking, and it shows Jane’s self-confidence growing in every stage of her life.
As many high school seniors start their year they begin to ponder one very important question. That is do they go to a traditional four year school, go into the work for or go for a trade. Well there is a third option that is not very common or talked about a lot, it is a gap year. What this is a year to do what the person pleases and find themselves and figure what they want to do. Weather this be working for a year to save money for their dream college, to travel the word and go on missions trips to under developed places, also to gain a more advanced cultural understanding of the world, Or all their other plans have fell through for one reason or another. These are not all the reasons students take gap years
