Beowulf: The Hero An epic is a long narrative poem on a serious subject. It usually is about the adventurers of a hero. The hero is usually a figure of high social status and one who is often of great historical or legendary importance. In the epic poem Beowulf, Beowulf is the hero. He shows that he is a great man by always putting other things before his own needs. He is important and needed by his people and is known by many as a courageous and helpful person. Beowulf is a good example of a courageous and strong hero. He shows all of the qualities and traits that a true hero possesses. Beowulf is a very brave and courageous person. His actions toward the monster Grendel that was terrorizing the Danes show that he is willing to help others. In an epic it is usually found that the hero often determines the fate of a nation or group of people. Beowulf has definitely helped the Danes and his own people the Geats in their triumph over evil by killing Grendel his mom and the dragon. He has helped mankind a great deal and because of that he is made king of the Geats. Beowulf's brave deeds and accomplishments have contributed to the Danes and the Geats survival. Another characteristic of and epic poem is that the hero performs outrageous and sometimes superhuman deeds. Beowulf is a prime example of this type of hero. He volunteers himself to fight Grendel and when Grendel's mom seeks revenge he goes to the lake and takes on the challenge. He shows the great qualities of strength and power when, after fifty years, he takes on the dragon who has become a threat to the Geats. He always battles his enemies with pride. When Beowulf and wiglaf fight the dragon and everyone else becomes cowardly and runs off to the forest and hides. Through this it is shown that they possess courageous traits and are genuinely ready and willing to help. Often in an epic poem, the plot is complicated by supernatural beings and events. Good examples of this are when Beowulf fights Grendel. Grendel is a monster and there is no such thing as a monster. The same goes for the dragon. Throughout history there has never been a dragon that gets mad that a thief has taken part of his treasure. Also when Beowulf is dying he asks Wiglof to show him the treasures before he dies. Everyone knows that you can not hold off your death just so you can see treasure. These examples show the complications that are found throughout the plot of an epic poem. An epic poem usually presents the situations of good and evil and life and death. The epic poem Beowulf possesses both of these things. The good is shown through the actions of Beowulf and Wiglaf when they defeat the evil, who are shown by Grendel, his mom, and the dragon. Good and evil always leads to life and death. The good live and the evil die most of the time. In Beowulf the good defeated the evil. Beowulf was known by the Geats and the Danes as a very generous, kind, and strong person, who would give anything for the Survival of the people. These characteristics are what help to classify Beowulf as a true epic hero.
The article “Birth control: World of Invention, 2006 Updated: April 30, 2006” defines birth control as, “contraception or the use of physical barriers, timing of sexual intercourse, chemicals, or a combination of these methods to prevent pregnancy. Many methods have been designed for women 's use, but few are available to men. There are quite a few reasons to use some form of birth control. The main one being to avoid pregnancy. Other reasons could be to prevent contracting an STD/STI and regulate hormone levels in order to control one’s menstrual cycle.
Beowulf displayed great courage and honor throughout his journeys and battles; he was an epic hero. An epic hero is a person who is viewed as larger than life and possesses values of a certain society. From the time of Beowulf’s battle with Grendel to his brawl against the dragon, he has showed everyone what being an honorable hero looks like. His heroism is revealed through both youth as a young warrior and wisdom as a reliable king. He never backed down and didn’t give up when situations were tough. Beowulf had obligations to fulfill and went about every aspect of his life with courage and strength. He cared for his people and was willing to take on anyone that threatened them or his kingdom. He sincerely was the hero of his time.
Having babies is a wonderful thing embraced by many women; however, having an unplanned one is not so nice. It is good to have an option of avoiding that, contraceptive methods can hold the pregnancy till the time is right. Thanks to John Rock, who was the first man to ever invent the birth control pill, we have the option of waiting until we are ready. Even though this sounds like a wonderful idea, there are major health risks to receiving any form of contraceptive. Even though your Gynecologist does not mention it, no birth control is truly safe.
In 1960, birth control was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for contraceptive use (Nikolchev). Since then, birth control pills have had a tremendous impact in the American culture. Women were now able to prevent unplanned pregnancy without the consent of their partners and eliminating the use of condoms and other dual consent birth control methods. Birth control pills contain two important hormones: estrogen and progesterone. Natural estrogen is a hormone that is produced in the ovaries and helps regulate the menstrual cycle (Rettner). According to Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Steven Goldstein, “progesterone is a hormone that stimulates and regulates important functions, playing a role in maintaining pregnancy, preparing the body for conception and regulating the menstrua...
Birth control has been a huge part of the human life and it has helped many women from not becoming pregnant. Over the years there has been numerous of methods invented to prevent pregnancy among women. In which these methods help the fertility control and also helps the prevention sexually transmitted infections. Birth control can be affective as long as the proper birth control is being used correctly.
“The best form of birth control is an aspirin grasp firmly between the [female] knees,” states a 1950’s old wives’ tale, the truth to the matter is birth control has not changed much since then. The female contraceptive began marketing in the 1960’s (Sohn 1). That means the pill, as it is commonly known, just celebrated its fiftieth birthday. Birth control is anything that prevents the ovum, commonly known as the egg, from meeting up with sperm cells (Planned Parenthood 2). Female hormonal pills, or patches, use levels of chemical synthesized hormones to trick the body into thinking it is carrying a baby (Planned Parenthood 3). This is used and a method of pregnancy prevention and hormone management in women. These hormones are used to get young ladies to start menstruation and fight off early signs of menopause, or the absences of menstruation for a whole year (Planned Parenthood 1). Male forms of birth control have dated back to the 1800’s; making those even changing less than female forms (Planned Parenthood 3). With years to prefect and master female birth control is still not the safest or most practical option, and with male forms being held back, birth control is still viewed as a woman’s job; however, when sex and pregnancy prevention effect both parties they both should be offered equal options to prepare and protect themselves.
The epic poem Beowulf focuses on the hero. Throughout various generations and cultures, people have had an image of the archetypal hero. The Anglo-Saxon ideals of heroism were strength, bravery, and loyalty, which were exactly the qualities that Beowulf possessed. Beowulf, as a result, was an icon of his ancient Germanic heritage. He imitated the world around him by reflecting past traditions of heroes and mirrored their characteristics and actions. With him, his honor and pride made him not only a hero of his own time, but also a hero for generations to come.
In the United States, out of all pregnancies 52 percent are unplanned. This is strictly from misuse of birth controls or lack thereof. Of all the 52 percent of unplanned pregnancies only 5 percent were from contraceptives failing. Although there are numerous different forms of contraceptives most of them are geared more towards women. Women have the option of; Abstinence, Implants, Patches, pills, shot, sponge, Vaginal Ring, Cervical Cap, Diaphragm, and finally the IUD.
Being a mother is a God-given right for every woman, and it is a precious experience of a woman’s life. However, several scientific researches show that unplanned and unwanted pregnancies lead to overpopulation, poverty, joblessness, and health complications for both mother and child. Sometimes if a child’s birth is unplanned, the relationship between the child and parent will be poor. That is why birth control methods are very necessary things to prevent those kinds of unwanted and unplanned pregnancies. There are several types of birth control methods that have been confirmed by scientific processes, including tubal ligation, vasectomy, implant, injection, combined oral contraceptive, patch, emergency contraception, and more. However, according
The only guaranteed option of birth control is abstinence. Abstaining from having sexual intercourse will ensure that pregnancy does not occur and also prevents sexually transmitted infections. People may find it difficult to abstain for long periods of time and tend to end their abstinence without being prepared to protect themselves against pregnancy or venereal diseases. Many choose outer course which is sex play without vaginal intercourse. For others, it is sex play with no penetration at all. It is a 100% effective against pregnancy unless pre-ejaculate or sperm gets onto the vulva or into the vagina. Outer course however, frequently leads to intercourse, therefore another form of birth control and protection from infection has to be used.
The epic poem of Beowulf is a tale of bravery and devotion. Beowulf was a God fearing man and encouraged his men to be of the same, he fought bravely against many foes and won all but his last. The story of Beowulf is just that a story. It is not certain whether he really lived or not but the story of Beowulf came about shortly after Higlac led a military raid around the year 525. During the time period Beowulf was written, there were many epics being written about the same types of things. The Odyssey by Homer was another great fictional epic. Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet was a romantic epic written in this time.
Beowulf also contains an epic hero. The title of the poem has been named after our epic hero, Beowulf. In definition, an epic hero is someone that does larger than life deeds and is stronger and smarter than any normal man; and Beowulf fits this description as if the mold were made for him. He has the strength of thirty men and uses it as a major weapon against evil. This can be seen through Beowulf’s battles with Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon.
Some of the most common type of contraceptive methods are the pill, sterilization, condoms, IUD, and vaginal ring. Personally I would use the LARC method, the methods include intrauterine device (IUD) and the birth control implant. "It 's the most widely used contraceptive in the world" (Alexander 118) There are several benefits that come with using the LARC methods. First, these methods can last up to 5 to 10 years and are "20 times more effective than birth control pills, the patch, and the ring." Secondly, they are reversal, so if a women changes her mind and wants to become pregnant it can be taken out. The removal is said to be quicker and easier than the procedure of getting it put in. I have had friends tell me that it 's pretty comfortable and they can 't even tell its there and neither can their partner. Third, it doesn 't require daily attention and it can 't be seen or felt. Once it is put in you do not have to remember to do anything with it. For busy teens with school and other activities this would be benefit. Also if they are trying to keep it a secret from anyone they don 't have to worry about it being seen. Lastly it is a small contraceptive device, so it wont be a bother. Other pros include a decrease in menstrual pain and heavy menstrual bleeding. It can cost much less than other contraceptives with insurance. LARC is just an all around better
Having a baby at a young age can be very difficult, but having an unplanned baby can stressful, challenging and can change a couple’s life dramatically . Having a baby is like a job with many responsibilities and duties, except there is a life of a human being involved that must be taken care of. There are ways to be sexually active and still prevent pregnancy for females. There are many methods out there, but the most common methods are known as oral contraceptives and implant contraceptives. They both advantages and disadvantages of oral contraceptives and implant contraceptives. After doing research, there are more disadvantages than advantages when taking birth
There are many forms of artificial contraception. I am going to discuss some of those forms and the Church’s opinion. Condoms, or rubbers, are shaped like a balloon and are made of a special kind of rubber. Condoms prevent sperm from reaching the cervix. They are placed over the male’s erect penis before intercourse. They are 80-90% effective. No prescription is needed to use them. They protect against STD’s. They are more protective in preventing AIDS, then preventing pregnancy. They are not fully effective because they can break, have defects, be slippery, or it can be too old. Spermicides such as: creams, foams, vaginal supporsitones, and vaginal film form a chemical barrier that kills or makes the sperm inactive, which makes it impossible to become pregnant. They are 80% effective. It is available without a prescription and provides some STD protection. Effectiveness is increased if used with condoms. Vasectomies are common for men. The tube that carries the sperm is cut and tied which prevents sperm from being ejaculated. It is 99% effective This procedure is permanent and is done through a small incision near the testicles. It does not affect sexual arousal. A cervical cap is a soft rubber dome that forms a barrier to prevent sperm from reaching the cervix. The spermicidal gel kills the sperm. It is 85% effective. It may give some protection against chlamydia and gonorrhea. The diaphragm does the same thing as a cervical cap and is 85% effective. It is a flat rubber-like disk which has to be fitted from a doctor. It is placed inside the woman’s vagina before having intercourse. It is often used with cream or jelly that is placed around the edge of the diaphragm. There is a very high failure rate because sometimes they are not fitted or inserted correctly. They create fewer health risks for women. It may reduce the risk of cervical cancer and provides some STD protection. There are also injections for men and women. In men, a drug is injected into the sperm duct to disable the sperm for a period of time. Depo-Provera injections that contain the hormone, progesterone is injected and it prevents the release of an egg from the ovary. It is 99% effective. It is long lasting and highly effective. It also protects against uterine cancer. But it does not protect against STD’s. Female condoms are 75-85% effective but 95% effective if used correctly.
