Brothers, Tobias and Jace Kinnely walked down the pier; surveying the boats on either side. The summer sun beat down on their backs; wind blew in their identical ashy blond hair and made the sparkling ocean water choppy.
“Here she is.” Jace said stopping in front of a large sailboat. “Beautiful, isn’t she? You should feel her sail, Amazing!”
“Nice Jace, I’m really loving the boat, but come help me with the bags. “ Tobias struggled to board the boat with his bag plus the girls’ luggage. Lia Johnson and Jennifer Jackson (JJ) still lounged on the beach while Jace Tobias and Max turner loaded the boat for a scuba diving trip to an island and a beautiful reef.
Jace had just finished college and had saved up for months for the boat of his dreams and finally bought this one off of a friend. The trip was an early birthday gift to his little brother Tobi. Tobi had brought his girlfriend JJ and Jace had brought Lia and Max his two best friends.
Max trudged up the pier chucking the heavy bags of scuba gear on to the boat. “Nice ship Jace.” He said standing back to admire.
“Oh no, don’t get him started.” Tobi groaned.
Jace beamed and proceeded to point out every “perfect” detail of his boat. Tobi quickly made his retreat to go find Lia and JJ. He found them talking to a local fisherman. As he approached them he heard the conversation.
“I’m telling you I fish these waters; I know what’s out there. It is not safe.” The old man said his voice raising.
“We are not going far off the island, just to see the reef.” Lia reassured.
“How dangerous could that be?” JJ said being her usually confident self, but what scared Tobi was the hint of uncertainty in her voice. What were they talking about?
“Oh you just wanted to see the Sea life. How danger...

“What did that?” JJ managed.
“We need to go.” Jace said pulling at Lia urging her to move on. Working together the group continued to move, supporting each other and pushing on. The sun was setting and it was getting increasingly hard to see.
There was a large splash behind them and they looked back. The crippled dolphin was no longer visible.
“Go, Go!” jace yelled.
The group swam away using what little strength they had left to make their last dash.
“Look!” JJ sputtered.
The island was in view. They were not lost. The shallows was so close, safety was so close. Just a little bit longer and they would be out of danger. The sun sunk lower and slipped behind the horizon. Darkness engulfed them.
