What are aronia berries?
The Aronia Berry is said to be a superfood and is considered the healthiest fruit in the world today. It has richer antioxidant properties as compared to raspberries and blueberries. The bush plant which looks like a cranberry, is known to ward off several ailments and diseases.
The plant was first cultivated by the indigenous Indians in North America centuries ago, and was eaten as aphrodisiac and medicine. It has a sharp taste when eaten raw; hence, was given the name chokeberry. Nonetheless, it is seldom eaten raw but is made into sauces or blended into fruit juices.
The plant grows best in damp and mild conditions and is an ideal crop in some parts of Europe like Scotland. In North America, there are two well- known species - red (Aronia Arbutifoia) and black (Aronia melanocarpa). Two other variants, purple chokeberry (Aronia prunifolia) and Aronia mitschuri are also being cultivated.
The red berries are sweeter than the black variety. On the other hand, the black berries are darker in color but bigger in shape than the red variety. Aronia berries are of the same size as blueberries, and are now touted as the new super berry that is capable ot diminishing every known health problem to man – high blood pressure, heart disease, certain cancers, and memory loss due to aging. It is also known to boost the immune system through its anti-oxidant properties.

Chokeberries in Your Diet
Chokeberries can be eaten raw if you like its bitter and astringy taste. However, it can be added to baked muffins and bread and may be sprinkled to food to give it added tang. Chokeberries are also added to juices, teas, jams and other beverages. You must always remember though, never to eat more than two pieces of chokeberry based delicacy per day, since it may end up bloating your blood sugar instead.

This plant has a variety of names through out Montana. This plant grows in poor soil composing mostly of sand or gravel and is commonly found near Ponderosa Pine trees. Kinnikinnick and Bearberry are the most commonly used names in western society. The word kinnikinnick meaning that which is mixed, is derived from the Algonkian Indian’s language. Other versions came from western hunters who called it larb, Canadian traders called it sacacommis or sagack-homi, and the Europeans called it bearberry.

Through conquest and exploration, apples were spread when Romans conquered England and when Spaniards brought them to Mexico and South America. It wasn’t until the mid 1600’s that the Pilgrims cultivated them in Massachusetts. It is believed that John Endecott, an early governor, was the first to bring an apple tree to North America, and the first orchard was planted on Beacon Hill by a clergyman named William Blaxton. It is Blaxton who is credited for growing the first named apple, the Yellow Sweeting. Once apples were established in New England, they played an active role in everyday life. As a fruit which was easily stored through the winter, as well as being very beneficial to settlers’ health, apples were a main staple in early settlers’ diets. Despite the fact that apples were not initially from North America, and have been growing disease-free for centuries in their native habitats, the early settlers found that the long, hot summers and cold winters of New England grew apples unlike anywhere else in the world. New England apples are known not only for their unique blend of tart and sweet flavors, but also for their size and freshness.

Sweet potatoes date back to 750 B.C. in Peruvian reports, even though archeologists have found evidence showing that sweet potatoes began around 2500-1850 BCE. It is also said that Columbus brought sweet potatoes from England and soon after they were transported here. They became very popular in South and Central America. Later, Columbus brought sweet potatoes back to Spain and there they became popular as well. Nonetheless in recipes it would get confused as to whether it was the white potato or the sweet potato. Not until the late 1740’s was when they began to distinguish a difference. The sweet potato also got more “fame” when England’s John Gerard wrote about the sweet potato in his 1597 Herball or Generall Historie of Plantes. He wrote that the sweet potato “comforts, strengthens, and nourishes the body” and also, “procuring bodily lust”. Gerard’s suggested words could have been the reason for popularity of sweet potatoes during the 16th century.
The skin of this fruit can be red, purple, black and green. They are soft, round and smooth-skinned and are approximately 3-6 cm in size. It has a large stone like seed in the middle, which is discarded once pulp is consumed. They have a very pleasant aroma and the dried plums are called prunes.
