What are aronia berries?
The Aronia Berry is said to be a superfood and is considered the healthiest fruit in the world today. It has richer antioxidant properties as compared to raspberries and blueberries. The bush plant which looks like a cranberry, is known to ward off several ailments and diseases.
The plant was first cultivated by the indigenous Indians in North America centuries ago, and was eaten as aphrodisiac and medicine. It has a sharp taste when eaten raw; hence, was given the name chokeberry. Nonetheless, it is seldom eaten raw but is made into sauces or blended into fruit juices.
The plant grows best in damp and mild conditions and is an ideal crop in some parts of Europe like Scotland. In North America, there are two well- known species - red (Aronia Arbutifoia) and black (Aronia melanocarpa). Two other variants, purple chokeberry (Aronia prunifolia) and Aronia mitschuri are also being cultivated.
The red berries are sweeter than the black variety. On the other hand, the black berries are darker in color but bigger in shape than the red variety. Aronia berries are of the same size as blueberries, and are now touted as the new super berry that is capable ot diminishing every known health problem to man – high blood pressure, heart disease, certain cancers, and memory loss due to aging. It is also known to boost the immune system through its anti-oxidant properties.

Chokeberries in Your Diet
Chokeberries can be eaten raw if you like its bitter and astringy taste. However, it can be added to baked muffins and bread and may be sprinkled to food to give it added tang. Chokeberries are also added to juices, teas, jams and other beverages. You must always remember though, never to eat more than two pieces of chokeberry based delicacy per day, since it may end up bloating your blood sugar instead.
