In 1975 Angola no longer was a Portuguese Colony, for the next 15 years war raged as the three Angolan groups fought each other for control being influenced by the Cold War. When the Cold War ended the United Nations would get involved with establishing peace. In Angola the United Nations would succeed in UNAVEM I, But would struggle with the following missions in establishing peace in Angola. The UN would make mistakes within their control, but would also fall victim to uncontrollable situations. The UN would learn lessons in Angola that would help increase their abilities as world peacekeepers.
The first UN Mission in Angola would be titled as United Nations Angola Verification Mission (UNAVEM I). The mission would start in December 1988, the agreement provided for the implementation of a United Nations plan for the independence of Namibia, withdrawal of Cuban troops from Angola, and measures to achieve peace in the region. The main task of the mission was to monitor the withdrawal of all Cuban troops and their equipment. UNAVEM was to last 31 months, just one month after the deadline for Cuba to be withdrawn from the region. The Mission went as planned as the Angolan- Cuban agreement was followed as written. The withdrawal would occur faster than planned, the 50,000 Cuban troops and their equipment was totally extracted from Angola on May 25.
The forces that comprised UNAVEM would begin to leave Angola on 31 May. The Mission of UNAVEMI was a success, the goals set forth had been accomplished without delay. UNAVEM I was successful as it did not monitor the peace accords but only the removal of the Cuban Military. ... days of MONUA. The main problem the UN faced during the entirety of Angola was they tried to combat a vast problem with an easy solution. The UN was at a period of time when it did not realize how its power could be used and as well as how much, as well as what was the actual mission. This would be the major problems for the failure in assisting Angola in achieving peace.
The United Nations involvement in Angola would end with the UN leaving the country making ultimately no gains in the many years spent trying. The UN would succeed with UNAVEMI only because the mission was small, achievable, and did not face a root problem. When the UN intervened in UNAVEMII and later missions they did so with to large expectations and not realizing what problems actually existed. The United Nations would leave Angola in the same shape it was when they arrived, nowhere near peace.
