One of the most important times of the United States history is the blacks’ struggle to gain equality. During this time, the Civil Rights and Black Power movements played an important role in gaining the freedom that was much wanted and needed for the black Americans. But the two movements gave more to the United States than the freedoms to a race; it influenced other groups such as the student movement. The student movement has shown us that no matter whom you are, you can make your voice heard and change the world. During the Civil Rights, black students played an important role in gaining certain rights that were taken away from black Americans by white America. The students took part in many protests including sit-ins; for example, in Grensboro, North Caroline and Nashville, Tennessee , black students sat down in white seats in diners and refused to give up their seats until they were served. Later on, when the police would start to arrest them, a whole new set of students would come and take the seats and then the process continued until the Police no longer could arrest them. These kinds of actions by the black students made the white students rethink the amount of influence they could have on the world. As result, the student movement started. In the beginning, the student movement was largely influenced by the non-violence aspect of the Civil Rights movement. Colleges and universities, at that time, had a view of “In Loco Parentis” ; which means, in place of parents or in other words, the faculty and staff acted as the parents. At University of California-Berkeley , the students were frustrated with having their freedoms restricted; therefore, they started protesting. Differently, the students when they were a large group; they were more politically involved and believed in a moral cause. But as group got smaller, they became more violent and their cause started got covered by smoke caused from bomb blasts. Throughout the history of the two groups, they had similarities and their differences. Since time frame for them was similar, the similarities were more dominate than their difference. I believe that it is these similarities in the socio-economic, cultural, and political situations that allowed the two groups to work successful in the same area as the other group. And because of the student radicals were also semi-countercultures; their situations were largely influenced by the counterculture.
Such students differ from the minority groups of Native Americans or African Americans in that they were not so much fighting because they were being discriminated against, but more because they wanted to change what was at that time “the norm.” The civil rights movement was created around this time, and many individuals were beginning to find a voice. African Americans and Native Americans were protesting in order to gain equality and their rights, as opposed to fighting for political reasons. Yet, some of the students at this time were beginning to change their views and believed that it was time for racial equality to exist. Primarily, students formed organizations and clubs, protesting peacefully on their campus and within the college towns to get their beliefs across to others. However, as it became apparent that peaceful protests did not have a big enough impact, as a result of the Vietnam war, the most extreme activists argued that only violent protests would lead to real social change. The Weathermen, a revolutionary group which formed in 1969, proposed an armed struggle to overthrow the U.S. government. One of the first documented incidents of the sit-ins for the civil rights movement was on February 1, 1960 in Nashville, Tennessee. Four college African-Americans sat at a lunch counter and refused to leave. During this time, blacks were not allowed to sit at certain lunch counters that were reserved for white people. These black students sat at a white lunch counter and refused to leave. This sit-in was a direct challenge to southern tradition. Trained in non-violence, the students refused to fight back and later were arrested by Nashville police. The students were drawn to activist Jim Lossen and his workshops of non-violence. The non-violent workshops were training on how to practice non-violent protests. John Lewis, Angela Butler, and Diane Nash led students to the first lunch counter sit-in. Diane Nash said, "We were scared to death because we didn't know what was going to happen." For two weeks there were no incidences with violence. This all changed on February 27, 1960, when white people started to beat the students. Nashville police did nothing to protect the black students. The students remained true to their training in non-violence and refused to fight back. When the police vans arrived, more than eighty demonstrators were arrested and summarily charged for disorderly conduct. The demonstrators knew they would be arrested. So, they planned that as soon as the first wave of demonstrators was arrested, a second wave of demonstrators would take their place. If and when the second wave of demonstrators were arrested and removed, a third would take their place. The students planned for multiple waves of demonstrators.
The Civil Rights Movement changed American Democracy today in its fight against racial segregation and discrimination. We still see racial discrimination today, but we don’t see much racial segregation. People like Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, and A Philip Randolph led the Civil Rights Movement with their abilities to coordinate and connect people. They fought for equality among men and women of all colors and religions.
The 1960’s was a happening decade. It was a time when many people came together for a common good and stood against injustice. The 60’s is often recalled as the era of the peace sign, one ridden with hippies, marijuana and pacifism. While true of much of the era, some of the movements calling for immense social change began as non-violent harbingers of change and later became radicals. The reason for this turn to radicalism, as seen in the case of the Students for a Democratic Society, and as suggested by the change between this organizations earlier Port Huron statement and the later Weatherman Manifesto, is due to the gradual escalation of the Vietnam war.

In 1865, congress passed the thirteenth amendment, which was ratified on December 6, 1865. The thirteenth amendment abolished slavery in the United States permanently. It was thought by many African Americans that there would finally be peace, and that they too would be treated as fairly as the whites. This was sadly not the case. African Americans were brutally segregated and entrusted to hard times and conditions. Whites began to insist on racial segregation, which had been practiced before, and gave the feeling of superiority to the whites over African Americans. Many whites resisted the social changes, leading to revolting movements such as the Ku Klux Klan, whose members attacked African americans to maintain white dominance. This sparked the civil rights movement. Also called “freedom struggles”, these movements took place to obtain equal rights for African Americans. The sit in’s had a major impact on the psychological impact on African Americans. Not only was it the first African American sitting in, but other students started to follow the path of the Greensboro four and started to participate in sit ins as well. The sit in’s allowed for the civil rights for African Americans to be finally broadcasted live throughout the world. Even though the protesters heckled and beaten, they still sat and never moved, showing the resiliency of the protesters, and was a great role model for other African American protesters who decided it was time to fight against discrimination and fight for rights.
Success was a big part of the Civil Rights Movement. Starting with the year 1954, there were some major victories in favor of African Americans. In 1954, the landmark trial Brown vs. The Board of Education of Topeka Kansas ruled that segregation in public education was unfair. This unanimous Supreme Court decision overturned the prior Plessy vs. Ferguson case during which the “separate but equal” doctrine was created and abused. One year later, Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. launched a bus boycott in Montgomery Alabama after Ms. Parks was arrested for not giving up her seat in the “colored section”. This boycott, which lasted more than a year, led to the desegregation of buses in 1956. Group efforts greatly contributed to the success of the movement. This is not only shown by the successful nature of the bus boycott, but it is shown through the success of Martin Luther King’s SCLC or Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The conference was notable for peacefully protesting, nonviolence, and civil disobedience. Thanks to the SCLC, sit-ins and boycotts became popular during this time, adding to the movement’s accomplishments. The effective nature of the sit-in was shown during 1960 when a group of four black college students sat down at a Woolworth’s lunch counter in hopes of being served. With a country in shambles as a result of the Vietnam War, thousands of young men and women took their stand through rallies, protests, and concerts. A large number of young Americans opposed the war; with a common feeling of anti-war, thousands of youths united as one. This new culture of opposition spread like wild fire with alternative lifestyles blossoming, people coming together and reviving their communal efforts, demonstrated in the Woodstock Art and Music festival. The use of drugs, mainly marijuana, became a staple in the community of anti-war youths. The countercultures’ radical views and actions caused American society to turn its head and look to the young. They set themselves out as a group and were going to stand up for their rights as well as the rights of mankind.
Blacks have struggled to gain acceptance since they first were encountered with the injustice and inequality that dwelled in our country. However, whites had so repeatedly cut them down that most blacks were so far beaten into submission that hope for a better life seemed gone. The South could not stand having the government come and interfere in their affairs, and were willing to protest the government's decisions by not protecting activists. Then with the Montgomery bus boycott, all blacks finally had a cause to rally in support for. Rosa Parks sparked the beginning of the Civil Rights movement, and there were a mass population of blacks to join in. To go along with the determined blacks there were many whites from all levels that were willing to fight for equality. But blacks would not be deterred by these acts of hate; they weren't going to sit back and take it anymore. Racism affected nearly every aspect of life in America, and activists worked very hard in the face of violent resistance to combat some of the largest issues. Eyes on the prize: Ain’t Scared of Your Jails (1960-1961) shows the importance of students during the Civil Rights Movement. The first part of the episode shows black college students who staged sit-ins in Nashville, refusing to leave lunch counters until they were served. When those students were arrested, other black residents began boycotting other places to eat, shops, and buses to protest. They also refused bail and packed Nashville’s jails to full capacity. During the lunch counter movement, livid mobs attacked the student protesters with taunts, physical intimidation, and arrest. Though somehow, in spite of it all, the students refrained from fighting back. Soon afterwards, students began to challenge segregation in other college towns throughout the South. Ben West, Nashville’s mayor, called for “law and order” when the students arranged a boycott of the city’s downtown shops and gained a lot of attention from the national media. African Americans continually fought for freedom from the severe racism and restriction of rights before the 1960s, but that culminated in the decade. Events in the 60s helped give a rise to the Black Power movement by giving African Americans a “new mood” about their treatment from their oppressors. In April of 1964, African American attempted to convene into a political party, the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, to try to represent blacks, going through potential harm and the loss of jobs in order to do so. Unfortunately, when this political party was received at the Democratic National Convention they only received two seats and what they considered a “back of the bus offer”. Through further boycotting—the Montgomery Bus Boycott, for example—and the March on Washington. Both of these types of protest helped African Americans gain the winning Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Before the Civil Rights Movement, which took place from 1955-1968, African-Americans had a difficult time establishing an identity and their rights. However, for many African-Americans, the Civil Rights Movement developed a purpose for one’s life and progressed African-Americans’ status and rights in society. Although some people may argue that the Civil Rights Movement was not productive and only caused conflict and havoc, due to the majority of African-Americans still employed in low-level jobs and many towns affected by the Civil Rights Movement being torn apart and degraded, those effects were only temporary and tangible to others. The Movement had a much more profound effect of giving one a purpose or “spark” in life, which later led to African-Americans demanding more rights and equal status in society.
