Chapter 1
The opening sequence of events, which introduces us to George and Lennie indeed gives the impression that the larger Lennie, suffers from some form mental disability. He is the exact antithesis is the character of George, a small man, with sharp features, who seems to be close friend and confidant to Lennie. In addition to this, George also seems to be greatly concerned with Lennie’s safety and well-being. Furthermore, it seemed to me that the two have had a long-time close companionship, or, that George owes Lennie some type of allegiance, as George seems to have suffered at the expense of Lennie as is evident from the previous job.
Chapter 2
In this chapter, it became clear to me how difficult the work at the ranch was as previously alluded to by George. The harsh realities that occur at the ranch such as Slim ‘s drowning of the puppies, and the suggestion that Candy should replace his old dog, with a younger one which will be of more use.
The character of Slim is also interesting, as he seems to be quite an authoratative figure, despite not being the boss. It is still unclear to me as to where he derives his respect from. In addition to this, the bond between Lennie and George seems to have become closer as a result of Curley. This close relationship between men seems-at least so far- to be a recurring subject. There is no strong female prescence at the ranch, and it seem...
Candy is old and physically disabled. He is given the job of a swamp and is responsible for sweeping and mopping the bunkhouse. His dignity is dispossessed because he does not have a regular job like the others on the
Another aspect of the study I found attention grabbing was Williams conducted the study by an ethnographic approach. This approach requires the researcher to build a close relationship with those individuals being studied and typically demands long- term engagement in the field. I enjoyed that it is a multiple technique approach and that not one method is appropriate to a situation.
Even though Kennedy endured many hardships during his childhood, he grew up into a successful and ambitious man. He was born in Brookline, Massachusetts on May 29, 1917 to Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. Although, to the public he was known as “Jack Kennedy”. John F. Kennedy was also prone to being ill. He suffered from many illnesses such as chickenpox, measles, and whooping cough. However, this was not all that he had to endure. Before the age of three, Kennedy was diagnosed with scarlet fever, a life-threatening disease. Fortunately, he fully recovered from it and continued the routines of daily living (“John F. Kennedy”). Numerous individuals look back on someone’s life and evaluate of what importance their life was. Kennedy demonstrates that even though one may n...
The physical symbiosis of George and Lennie is beneficial to Lennie but detrimental to George. Although George used to hurt Lennie, Lennie now needs George to bail him out of trouble. Lennie also profits because he needs a person to tell him what to do. “He can’t think of nothing to do himself, but he sure can take orders” (39). Lennie is “a hell of a good worker”(22) and able to “put up a four-hundred pound bale” (22) but is likely to get himself in trouble without George’s protective influence. George likes Lennie but would be better off without him because “you (Lennie) can’t keep a job and you lose me ever’ job I get” (11). Lennie hinders George while George helps Lennie.
John F. Kennedy had many eventful things happen while he grew older. Kennedy got his education by going to, The Choate School and Harvard College. After his graduation from, Harvard he joined the U.S. Navy and entered World War II. After his patrol boat sunk, he swam himself to safety, then going back to the sinking boat and sacrificed his life to save injured in the boat. However Kennedys brother, who had also been part of World War II died while, fighting in Europe, which made john “next in line” for political leadership within the powerful Kennedy Clan.
John F. Kennedy’s presidency was short lived due to his assassination on November 22, 1963. He left behind a legacy for being the perfect image of happiness, youth, and success (Doc C). If Americans are asked about John F. Kennedy they will state that he is and was one of the best presidents in American history. However, most American citizens only see the man that looked well-groomed on the television screen. They do not take into consideration all of the harm Kennedy could have caused. When it came to running the white house his foreign policies were defective and his fear of losing support for legislation caused him to not push hard enough for change in the United states. All of Kennedy’s flaws caused him to be a bad
Even from the very start of John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men, the uniqueness of George, as a character, is already noticeable. He is described as “small and quick, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp strong features” and has an obvious dominance over the relationship between Lennie and himself. This lets the reader know from a very early stage in the book that George is different, and probably the essential character. George’s character seems to be used by Steinbeck to reflect the major themes of the novel: loneliness, prejudice, the importance of companionship, the danger of devoted companionships, and the harshness of Californian ranch life.
Although born into a politically prominent family on May 29, John Fitzgerald Kennedy’s path to presidential popularity had begun way before he was born. In 1849, JFK’s great grandfather emigrated from Ireland to Boston and worked for minimum wage for all of his life that he resided in America (Historic World Leaders). Starting with JFK’s grandfather, Patrick Joseph (P.J.) Kennedy, the life of a Kennedy, from birth to death, revolved around ideas of the want for power and stature. His grandfather, born into a poor family, worked his way up from poverty “to successes in the saloon and liquor-import businesses, branched out into banking, and became a backroom political operator” (Historic World Leaders) becoming a man of prestige just as his family had hoped. Blossoming from a business partnership, PJ Kennedy’s son, Joseph married Rose Fitzgerald in 1914. Joseph Kennedy was quite ...
The environment in America today is far from Eden, but there is a valiant battle being fought by many to return the earth to a more "natural" state. Green and clean is the preferred vision of the future1. This trend towards environmental awareness, or environmentalism, is a prominent theme in today’s American society. Politics, industry, marketing, and media all use the environment as a means to sell themselves. With such a high profile, it seems almost unbelievable that there was a time when the word environment was little known or not used. However, the period was not so long ago. Even before World War II nature was referred to as wilderness and wilderness existed to serve humans2. The shift from nature existing to serve humans to humans protecting the environment was not a very complex project, but rather one of many small influences and their resulting effects. Hence, the rise of environmentalism in American society is the result of gradual social changes, which created a shift in social values.
In 1989, seventy five percent of Americans identified themselves as environmentalists, and the number has continued to grow since then (Walls 1). Environmentalism is now the most popular social movement in the United States, with over five million American families donating regularly to environmental organizations (Walls 1). Environmentalists today focus on what kind of world they hope to see in the future, and largely deal with limiting pollution and changing consumption rates (Kent 1 and 9). Modern environmentalists also have much different issues than those Carson’s America faced. With climate change becoming more threatening each year, protection of the natural world is needed more than ever. Pollution has caused the warmest decade in history, the deterioration of the ozone layer, and species extinction in extreme numbers (Hunter 2). It not only threatens nature, but also human populations, who already suffer from lack of clean water and poisoning from toxic chemicals (Hunter 16). Unlike environmental actions in the 1960’s, which were mostly focused on protection, a massive increase in pollution has caused efforts to be focused on environmental restoration (Hunter 16). Like in the time of Silent Spring, environmentalists are not only concerned with one country. Protecting the environment remains a global issue, and every nation is threatened by the
“John F. Kennedy was the youngest man ever to be elected President of the United States of America. He entered in January of 1961 at the age of forty-three. With good looks and two beautiful young children, the nation watched the family with adoration, pride, and curiosity, despite John’s well-publicized adulterous behavior. Startlingly after only the 1,000 days in office, Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, becoming the youngest President ever to die in office; it was also marked as the “end of the innocence” in American culture. John F. Kennedy was born on May 29, 1917 in Brookline, Massachusetts to Joseph and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. His Father was a multimillionaire, who made is money by banking and stock market as well as dabbling in the film industry and bootlegging liquor. His family later moved to New York, where John attended Connecticut for his high school education and graduated in the spring 1935.
5.) Crooks- Crooks, the black stable-hand, gets his name from his crooked back. He is isolated from the other men because of the color of his skin. Soon, Crooks becomes fond of Lennie, and even though he claims to have seen countless men following empty dreams of buying their own land, he asks Lennie if he can go with them, because he wants to hoe in the garden.
William Golding illustrates World War II through young boys in this novel. Technology is one of the major destructors of a civilization. Jealousy is another destructor that ruins the good nature between men and brings out the beast from within. The author has chosen to show the evil in man though young boys to allow the world to understand how unethical the war was. The symbols, character, and setting are shown to correlate with the outside world. The novel just reinforces the idea of the savage within each and every human being.
Specifically concentrating on black humour and mood, it has easily been spotted throughout the production, particularly the scene where the Black Skirt transforms into Mr Horrocks. This scene demonstrates black humour as it is simply shown in the character’s dialogue, as well as their actions. This represents mood quickly focusing the attention on the Black Skirt’s clap and movement. This sound was a continuous movement that was found right when the children were going to bed. The clap itself signifies the idea of command, authority, power and change of time. Also, the scene where Mr Horrocks receives many goodies and treats when visiting the orphanage. Quoting “mmmm delicious mmm melts in my mouth” presents humour. The audience find this humorous as “he” is clearly over-exaggerating and overstating his dialogue, this is because it was made to look overindulgent. Not only that but when the children express their feelings about the orphanage and how “grateful” they are for living in such a horrible place. The audience found this amusing because of the actors use of sarcasm. In the orphanage, the children are used for slavery, the treatment they receive is very poor. Yet the children are appreciative and it seems like they are happy with what they have. This scene is represented as sarcasm because the children are living in a brutal home and are saying that they are grateful, the audience found this amusing as they are clearly stating the obvious that the orphanage is a horrible place; that they have no choice but to enjoy it. The convention black humour has effortlessly been shown during the performance specifically in that
William Golding is essentially the king of symbolism and covert delineation. The Lord of the Flies is a novel based around a large handful of English schoolboys becoming stranded on an island that will later become a sadistic dystopia. The boys are left unsupervised with only their ill experienced wits to survive and rule. A power struggle breaks out between two of the main characters, Jack and Ralph, Jack being the antagonist and Ralph being the protagonist of the story. In modern pop culture, Jack and Ralph would compare to an event like North Korea versus South Korea. Lord of the Flies is home to many forms of symbolism, including the importance of Piggy 's glasses, the fire on the island, the sow 's head, the beast and the conch shell; all of these items play a huge role in shaping the story, tone and the mood.
