ZZ Top is a very popular rock band that was particularly popular during the 1980’s. The group is composed of guitarist and lead singer, Billy Gibbons, bassist, Dusty Hill, and drummer Frank Beard. They have undergone numerous style changes during the years, which can be categorized as their early years, their synthesizer period and their modern sound. However, their Texas, blues, and rock roots have remained constantly apparent in all their works.
ZZ Top has not always been the power trio of Gibbons, Hill and Beard. In fact, Gibbons is the only one who has been with the band since the very beginning. The band was originally made up of Billy Gibbons, organist Lanier Greig, and drummer Dan Mitchell. Nevertheless, Greig and Mitchell were only

Going with their characters, the album is described as lively, playful, and at times brash, filled with the band’s humorous personal experiences. Though the album is fairly charming and very good for a starting point, yet it is not well polished and has several flaws. Then, in 1972, following ZZ Top’s First Album, was Rio Grande Mud, which isn’t particularly bad, but was very poorly received. It is reported that while touring that album ZZ Top played to nearly empty auditoriums and was booed off stage a few times. Rio Grande Mud received mixed reviews from The Rolling Stone and 3.5/5 stars from AllMusic. It featured one single, “Francine,” their first hit which reached #69 on the Billboard charts. Closing out their early years, in 1973 ZZ Top released Tres Hombres, one of their most popular albums to date. It was their most famous album prior to their synthesizer period. Tres Hombres reflected their blues roots considerably more than their two previous albums, while equally incorporating the other factors that make up their unique style. The album has a very strong, forward sound that is supported beautifully by Hill and Beard, and Gibbons’ “growling” guitar sound. This album is considered partially responsible for ZZ Top’s fame. This was their first album to feature live tracks, which were “Thunderbird,” “Jailhouse Rock,” and “Backdoor Medley.” Fandango! featured two singles “Tush” and “Heard it on the X,” though “Tush” was the notable one of the two, which peaked #20 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Following it was Tejas, which fell really flat of the groups standards and expectations. The album is negligible and received a rating of 2/5 stars from AllMusic. Then after the disappointment that was Tejas, they came in with their biggest grossing album yet, Degüello. This album was their first with Warner Bros. Records. This was their first album to go Platinum, and it made it their in half the time it took Tres Hombres to get to Gold. Degüello featured two hit singles, “Cheap Sunglasses” and “I Thank You.” It also received a rating of 4.5/5 stars from AllMusic. They ended their first decade with El Loco, another successful album, with three singles, “Tube Snake Boogie,” “Pearl Necklace,” and

Today's music scene is slowly growing, and differentiating in styles. One of the newest styles of music that has broken out is a generally unrecognized genre of music called "Geek Rock." By taking the meaningful lyrics of Emo, the heavy guitar riffs of Grunge, and the do-it-yourself attitude of Indie rock, this genre forms a new-wave approach to music. Many new artists have been categorized under this label, including Ben Kweller, Ozma, and Rooney. Rivers Cuomo, front man and lyricist of Weezer, is predominantly responsible for this underground rock movement. By transferring his life experiences into a musical statement, Rivers Cuomo has the ability to appeal to his fans on a new level.
When I was first given this assignment earlier in the semester, I knew whom I wanted to right about immediately. One of the most recognizable rock stars from the 1980’s and even now, the bassist from Motley Crue, Nikki Sixx.
Carlos Santana Ryan Conroy All the world knows the special magic of Carlos Santana. In every performance, Carlos shares with his audience a personal communication that crosses all boundaries and differences. Carlos was introduced to traditional music by his father, Jose. An accomplished mariachi violinist and experienced musician, he taught Carlos the basics of music theory and gave him an understanding of the value of a note. Although Carlos' excitement for music would be sparked by his first experience, he quickly discovered the limits of its traditional form and wanted more. Carlos wanted to play the kind of music that was filling the radio waves and making people dance. Soon he was being asked to join local bands like the T.J.'s, where he added a unique touch and feel to his own renditions of all the great songs of the 1950's. As he continued to play with different bands along the busy Tijuana Strip, he not Page Two only started to perfect his style and sound, but actually started bringing home enough money to really help his family.
sold to her father and never released. Selena was the Hot Latin Tracks artist of the year in 1995. Selena has had seven number one singles on the Billboard’s Hot Latin chart. Only three other Latin artists have had more. The “Dreaming of You” album was the second fastest selling album by a female artist in history next to Janet Jackson. Although Selena improvised and created her own dance moves on stage, she used to watch “Soul Train” to get ideas for her dance steps.3 Once a man brought his sister who was dying of cancer and ...

...ndards high for the new album they wanted to create something with the same musical firepower as João Gilberto's classic “Chega de Saudade” and the same advanced production as “Sgt Peppers” of the Beatles. They wanted the music to be loved internationally but still be completely Brazilian. Though the end result of the albums were amazing neither Gil or Veloso were happy with the outcome, because the recording studios in Brazil were not that great in quality at the time. Closely following the release of Gil and Velosos’ albums Gal Costa and Os Mutantes released their own tropicalismo album.

The genre that has been chosen to focus on and examine is much less known than Reggae. It can be assured that a number of people asked on the subject will have no knowledge of the genre and perhaps not even recognition to the name. This particular genre is that of Zydeco music. Zydeco music is Louisiana based and most notably linked to Cajun music. Its roots are deep in the South and although it tends to not venture far from home, those around it have found music to fall in love with.
The Yardbirds are famous for acquiring some of the greatest blues- based guitarists of their time period. The initial launch of this English band began in the early 1960’s. The Yardbirds weren’t as famous as other bands during the 60’s, but they established the initiation that the guitar would have on other musicians. The original band members of the Yardbirds were Keith Ref, Chris Dreja, Paul Samwell- Smith, Jim McCarty, and Anthony Topham (Wenner, Jann S.). They became known as “inventors,” one of their inventions being the “rave-up,” a blues rhythm. Throughout the 60’s, this became the groundwork for all of rock music. Other bands such as Led Zeppelin, Cream, and Jeff Beck Group are all derived from three of the most dominant guitarists: Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, and Jeff Beck. Many styles of music never would have been produced if it weren’t for the Yardbirds, these including: “garage- rock, hard- rock,...

They toured Scandinavia for awhile also to complete their obligations to the Yardbirds.
