A zoologist is constantly surrounded by animals and is able to have an ever-changing work environment where they have new tasks to perform daily. Zoologist get to study how animals interact with others and their environment, and have a different job everyday. Many people who want to be a zoologist have characteristics that include a love of animals, and doing well in their science and math classes. To be a zoologist students need a bachelor’s degree in a biological science, and a master’s or doctoral degree is almost necessary to get a higher position (“A Day in the Life”). The schedule for this job isn’t too demanding either, on average a zoologist will work 40 hours a week (“Nature of the Work”). It is also very beneficial, if a student pursuing this type of job, does well in their biology and mathematics classes because these courses will be a key element in this occupation. For this project, I decided to take on the career of a veterinarian. As a veterinarian, I would have to examine animals to diagnose their health problems, treat and dress wounds, perform surgery on animals,test for and vaccinate against diseases, operate medical equipment(x-ray machines, etc.), advise animal owners about general care, medical conditions, and treatments, prescribe medication, and euthanize animals. To get a job in this profession, you have to have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. You also have to have to take many science classes including biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, zoology, microbiology, and animal science.You would have to take about four years of college which adds up to about $100,000 dollars in student
For as long as I can remember, my childhood dream has always been wanting to become a veterinarian. While other kids were outside having fun at the playground, I was at the library reading books and learning about the different animals. However, as I matured, I realized that being a veterinarian isn’t just about caring for and assisting injured animals. Being a veterinarian means having the ability to make quick decisions in stressful situations, showing complete dedication and passion to this profession, and being able to effectively communicate to pet owners.
