The Zodiac Killer The Zodiac Killer was a serial killer located in Northern California in the late 1960’s to the early 1970’s. This killer is directly linked to five murders in Northern California and two victims escaped sustaining serious injuries (Kobek). The Zodiac would taunt police and newspaper editors by sending them letters and then quickly ceasing communication. In these many letters he sent to the editors and police, he claimed to have killed as many as 37 people, even though there are only five confirmed victims (Warren). On Tuesday, October 14, 1969, newspaper editor, Carol Fisher, was sorting through the large pile of letters sent to the newspaper, three days after the murder of Paul Stine. The same place as Zodiac victim, Darlene Ferrin. Looking at the famous police sketch that has been circulating the internet for over 50 years, Earl Van Best Jr. matches the sketch the best by far. The sketch depicts a man with glasses, short hair, and thin lips, which matches Van Best to a tee. Earl Van Best Jr.’s biological son, Gary L. Stuart, wrote an article by the name of The Most Dangerous Animal of All, where he tries to prove that his father was the killer. In this article, it claims that the Zodiac and Van Best Jr. had the same handwriting due to Van Best’s signature found on a marriage certificate (Paige et al.). However, Mike Rodelli, a Zodiac theorist, does not believe this claim and believes that the handwriting found on the certificate was actually of an individual who worked at the church when Stuart’s parents got married.
