Since Zaroff has hunted his entire life he is more accustomed to hunting. In The Most Dangerous Game Zaroff tells Rainsford a story of his first time hunting stating, “I killed my first bear in the Caucasus when I was ten. My whole life has been one prolonged hunt.” Zaroff has hunted since he was 10, therefore he practically grew up hunting.
Zaroff is also astute, or smart. He has killed many men without being caught. Meaning he is hard to track. He kills the men by playing his “game”. The
general explains the game saying, “ I suggest to one of them that we go hunting. I give him a supply of food and an excellent hunting knife. I give him three hours' start. I am to follow, armed only with a pistol of the smallest caliber and range. If my quarry eludes me for three whole days, he wins the game. If I find him "--the general smiled--" he loses.” The general also says, “To date I have not lost…” Finally, Zaroff is thrill-seeking. He says in the story, “Hunting tigers ceased to interest me some years ago. I exhausted their possibilities, you see. No thrill left in tigers, no real danger. I live for danger, Mr. Rainsford.” He is up to do anything and kill anything. In conclusion, if put up against each other in hunting I think Zaroff would beat Rainsford. I believe he has all the character traits needed to be a good hunter. He is smart, has hunted longer, and he isn’t afraid to try new things.
In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Gen. Zaroff is shown as insane, intelligent and competitive. Zaroff is shown to be insane in the story when he explains who he hunts. “So I said: ‘What are the attributes of an ideal quarry?’ and the answer was of course ‘It must have courage, cunning, and be able to reason… My dear fellow, there is one that can… Why should I not be serious, I am speaking of hunting” (Connell 69-70). Do you know the definition of a serial killer? Maybe you have your own definition, such as: a person that mass murders people in the grocery store. Or: a crazy human being that kills people more than once. According to Dictionary.com, a serial killer is defined as “a person who carries out a series of murders, often with no apparent motive and typically following a characteristic, predictable behavior pattern.” General Zaroff from the story The Most Dangerous Game fits almost exactly into that definition. He makes the worst decisions over all of our short stories because he takes innocent lives with great intention, he takes immense pleasure in doing so, and he does it repeatedly.
Richard Connell, the author, does an incredible job of portraying the insane, however experienced hunter, General Zaroff as a man who hunts man for fun. The portrayal of a sophisticated, educated, cultured man with psychopathic tendencies was evident in many different instances. Interesting enough, I discovered that paintballing was actually inspired in part by the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Most_Dangerous_Game), which leaves us to think “Man is the cruelest animal.” (Friedrich Nietzsche).
General Zaroff used hunting tactics when they were eating “the last supper” at Zaroff’s house. Every time Rainsford looked up, he said, “he found him studying him, appraising him narrowly” (Connell 66). By this, the reader can tell that Zaroff is trying to notice Rainsford’s tendencies. Knowing these can make hunting him easier. Also at dinner, Zaroff explains to Rainsford that “God made him a hunter” and how his father believed that “his hand was made for the trigger” since he was ten (Connell 85). Zaroff sharing this with Rainsford is proof that this man is a talented hunter and has been for a long time. Rainsford is quite the hunter himself. So much so, that Zaroff knew who he was when he arrived. The General stated, “It is a very great pleasure and honor to welcome Mr. Sanger Rainsford, the celebrated hunter, to my home” (Connell 52). Also during the hunt when Rainsford set up the Burmese tiger pit and claiming one of Zaroff’s dogs, Zaroff tells him, “You’ve done well, Rainsford” (Connell 194). Actions can speak volumes of a character’s personality and intentions. The Most Dangerous Game is no exception, there are many instances where you can learn a lot about Zaroff through his actions. One of the first displays of his true madness is shown in his reaction to Rainsford’s surprise of the so ultimate prey “‘Hunting? Great Guns, General Zaroff what you speak of is murder.’ The general laughed with entire good nature.”(9). It is slightly horrifying how nonchalantly he reacts to this. It just just how utterly desensitized he is to cold-blooded murder that he genuinely laughs in response to it. He completely disregards the claim without a thought, as is Rainsford was making some sort of extravagant claim. Next, his two-facedness is shown but very subtly when it is described that “A trace of anger was in the general’s black eyes, but it was there for but a second; and he said, in his most pleasant manner,”(10). Here, his inner savage is shortly revealed before he quickly restores his facade. Lastly, another revealing showing of his character is shown when he finds Rainsford in the tree and “very deliberately...blew a smoke ring into the air; then he turned his back on the tree and carelessly walked away,”(15).
