The allusion that was most obvious to me in “Young Goodman Brown,” was of the man who resembled Moses, even carrying his staff, which was transformed into a snake (and back) by God. However the image of a serpent is also known to be the oldest imagery to portray Satan and evil, ever since that time a snake tempted Adam and Eve. Moreover, the mention of Egyptian Magi indicates that the serpent staff of the Moses-like man was most likely similar to the staff that the Egyptian sorcerers of Moses’ time had acquired from demons, rather than Moses’ heavenly staff. The setting of the story is also largely symbolic since it takes place in Salem, Massachusetts, which is where the Salem Witch Trials took place. Even at the start, I assumed there would be more heavenly references, but have come to realize there is an equal amount of evil and witchcraft references. This illustrates how humans are made up of mostly sin rather than purity, and how evil can easily disguise itself as righteous. The man who resembled Moses was actually the Devil, which could be a reference to the False Prophet mentioned in the book of Revelations, a wicked man who appears miraculous. The scene of the witch meeting could represent all the evil that plagued Salem, and how universal sin is since it can reach the holiest of preachers and purest of children. Hawthorne also uses these allusions to contrast good and evil and show how close the two are related; Faith is an angel on earth but the Devil is a fallen angel, and the red liquid in the rock at the witch meeting is an image suspiciously similar to the spiritual rock that the Bible says to drink from: Jesus. Lastly, the immense allusions to evil make it a norm in Goodman Brown’s environment, and rather than being able to fight temptation, he gives into it in the end. Since he was so faithful to the good of Christian figures around him, he was blindsided to the evil within people, which made the witch meeting shocking and traumatic.
