“Young Goodman Brown” is a short story written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1835. The story begins with our main character, the newly wed Goodman Brown, saying goodbye to his wife, Faith, to run an errand in the woods. Even though his new wife begs and pleads with the young man to stay with her, he is steadfast in completing the task that very night. While travelling through the woods, Goodman meets a mysterious man, who we find out is the Devil, carrying a serpent-shaped walking stick and bearing a striking resemblance to himself. Conversation ensues as Goodman explains to the man that he is the first Brown to ever travel into the woods on such an errand. The man with the serpent staff, ever so politely, disagrees telling Goodman of the many enjoyable strolls he had taken with both his father and grandfather in those very woods. …show more content…

All very pious characters, at least from what he knew, from which Goodman hides, worried about how others might judge him for meeting with the Devil, no doubt. All seem to be on their way to a big meeting. They are excited to be expecting to take two new members into communion that night. When Goodman has finally made up his mind to have nothing to do with the devil and leave the sinful forest he hears his wife’s voice echoing through the trees. He calls out for her, but no response. Goodman stumbles through the forest and into a clearing where the villagers were gathered conducting a ritual by firelight on a rocky altar. To his dread, the two new members expected that night were Goodman and Faith. He screams for Faith to turn her eyes toward heaven and resist the evil. Suddenly, it all disappears.
