Introduction
February 2005 was an important date in the cyberspace when three former PayPal staff decided to leave the company and launch YouTube, a video-sharing website which offers services of uploading, watching and sharing users’ videos without any charge. Loads of new registered users soon made the site well-known; so much that it drew the attention of Google. The Internet giant then bought the website in November 2006, and the site now runs as a Google’s subsidiary.
Being an eye-catching medium of communications, YouTube has made a major contribution to education worldwide (Bonk, 2009). It has become one of the most favorite English teaching tools of educators (Duffy, 2008). According to Terantino (2011), this website offers users “fast and fun access to language and culture-based videos and instruction from all over the globe”. As a matter of fact, it urges us to change our learning ecology (Kwan et al., 2008). The website states on its press link “http://www.youtube.com/yt/press/statistics.html” that it “is localized in 61 countries and across 61 languages”. Among these languages is Vietnamese, for which YouTube doesn’t launch any local version. According to TechinAsia (2013), there are approximately 15 million Vietnamese who view videos online, and their most favorite site is YouTube. While the controversies over copyright infringement and explicit depictions of sexual activity and nudity of the site still exist, its enormous quantity of videos and tremendous variety of content enable YouTube to become a valuable resource for mentors to exploit.

The web is no longer a read only product, it now has the ability to be interactive and particpatory. Users are able to interact over the internet with each other with instant messaging and emails and use social networks to share news, videos, and photos with others, bringing people with common interest, opinions, and experiences together and closer. Some of the most popular social networks include Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn. Currently social networks are mostly used to keep in touch with friends, colleagues, peers and family, there are far more benefits, that the social media platform can provide. This paper explores the topic of social media in modern education. There are benefits and disadvantages to social media being used in the classroom setting, and they are discussed in detail through the paper.
YouTube is an video-sharing organisation that was established in 2005 by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim who were former PayPal employees. It is now the 3rd most popular website in the world now and is currently owned by Google. Over 1 billion accounts are registered to the website and 6 billion hours of footage from the site is watched monthly. The success of the website has greatly benefited people’s lives and stories and has helped change world problems. It has also created many new businesses and has helped them become successful. Most of all, it has helped teach, inform and humour a incredibly large online community.
One of the most widely used technologies is the Internet, or also known as the World Wide Web. “In August 1981 about 200 computers hosted Web servers. By July 1998 there were over 36 million Web servers, that are hosts to approximately 150 million people” (Strauss). The Internet proves to be very beneficial to education, since students have unlimited access to millions of websites with tons of information. There are only so many newspapers, journals and magazines that you can find in libraries or subscribe to. Therefore, the Internet offers an unlimited pile of information that students can always have. Moreover, students are enriched with the most current information in any subject, along with regular updates. Students are able to use the Internet anytime of day, as long as they have a computer at hand. The research process will not have to end when the school day is over (Wissick, 82).
In conclusion, technology has changed education for the better allowing access to unlimited resources, distance learning and broadening the means of communication. Technology creates a more encouraging environment and stimulates students to engage in something they may be familiar with. Technology has allowed people to know more and to collaborate with each other. Students have a great range of technologies which strengthens the relationship between knowledge and students. The technology used today throughout the world will only strengthen and advance the 21st century education system. With unlimited resources, students can take advantage of their learning and gain the most from it. Integrating technology into education promotes a better learning community.
Students nowadays, are so focus on technology and how they can put their hands in technology. As a future teacher I believe that, the best way to capture my student’s attention is by providing them with tools that can motivate them to learn. With the use of technology, I may approach teaching differently by encouraging my students to use on-line resources. Using on-line resources, would be beneficial for the students, because they would be able to explore many on-line resources. The students would be encouraged to use the on-line materials, I as a teacher would encourage them to use. Such as Internet Workshops and WeQuests. Over the years it has been seen that education has taken up several forms. With the advent of technology, education has also been integrated with technology. Previously it was seen that education was achieved through written forms of paper with pen or pencil. The use of pen and pencil can be dated back to the Roman Empire. However, with the developing pace the traditional means of attaining education are changing. The introduction of information technology has brought forth a new way of learning through the internet. E-learning is the new form of education introduced by IT which helps people to attain knowledge through the use of their computers. A portal is introduced by the use of information technology which the students are able to access and to take tests. However, this new technology also brings with it other ethical issues of plagiarism and social contact. Online education is an inadequate alternative for traditional, classroom-based teaching for several reasons: there is no interactive communication between the student and the instructor, potential employers do not value online course work, class offerings are limited, instructor feedback to the student might be delayed for days, and group projects are nonexistent.
