Yoga for Beginners"The evening is the perfect time to calmly transition between being active and being quiet," says Patricia Walden, instructor ofP.M. Yoga for Beginners. "One of the greatest gifts yoga has to offer is deep relaxation." This 20-minute program is designed to balance, calm, and revitalize you at the end of the day. It starts with centering poses: gentle stretches bringing awareness and quiet to your senses. Next are standing poses to release tension, increase circulation, expand the lungs, and help you breathe more deeply. Next, forward bends cool the body and bring quiet to the nervous system. The final restorative poses are so relaxing that you may fall asleep. Walden tells you not only how to do the poses, but what you should feel, and how to quiet your body and your mind. Instruction is soothing and explicit. Although this video is aimed at beginners, seldom are modifications given for the less flexible novice, so if any pose causes discomfort or seems impossible, don't push beyond your personal comfort level. The video was filmed on the windswept sands of Death
A fresh recruit to a discarded system is Mr. Jaime Escalante. In the film, Stand and Deliver, he had to adapt in his environment in James A. Garfield High School when, without prior notice, he was assigned to teach Mathematics instead of Computer. Quickly, as he set foot in the classroom, he had, most probably, a better discernment in human behavior. The reality of the high school he was employed in, he understood and tried to completely remove the universal gap between a traditional teacher and a disregarded student.
“Necessary Edges: Arts, Empathy, and Education” is an article written by world famous cellist, Yo-Yo Ma. In this article, Yo-Yo Ma identifies and discusses the role of arts in the world, stressing the point that these arts are a necessary element in the education system. Ma believes that the skills learned from these arts, are in fact, “essential” to the kind of balanced thinking that is needed in today’s world. Throughout this article, Yo-Yo Ma brilliantly portrays his thoughts, and gains the support of his audience through the use of ethos, logos, and pathos, while also maintaining a clear and concise stance.
If you are an experienced advertiser than you would now that the number one way to sell a product requires a well-known famous idol in a commercial. Proactiv is a company that sells medicine that is known to kill and prevent any bacterial breakouts. Additionally, Proactiv's commercials are known for featuring well-known celebrities to act as their spokesperson. One celebrity in particular, that was used in the selling of Proactive products was Adam Levine. Known to be the “sexist” person alive, Adam Levine is well known for his music and television show appearances. Using Adam as a spokesperson opens up opportunities to sell their products to not only his fans, but other individuals around the ages of thirteen to sixteen. While this advertisement would be effective to fans of Adam Levine, the overall information that was stated was weak and lacked any logical statements, besides the fact that “millions of people” use the treatment, that could have been used to prove their accusations true.
What is the way to persuade an audience? By persuading an audience, one should know how to use rhetorical strategies. Therefore, rhetoric is a technique in what everyone uses, without noticing, but it’s described as an art that let’s us deliver messages and try to communicate effectively with the audience in order to persuade them. A video, called “3 Ways to Speak English”, where a young woman presents her poem in being “Trilingual orator” giving her reasons and the definition of being articulate. Not only she speaks about it,but delivers a message to her audience to be articulate.
Pollan’s article provides a solid base to the conversation, defining what to do in order to eat healthy. Holding this concept of eating healthy, Joe Pinsker in “Why So Many Rich Kids Come to Enjoy the Taste of Healthier Foods” enters into the conversation and questions the connection of difference in families’ income and how healthy children eat (129-132). He argues that how much families earn largely affect how healthy children eat — income is one of the most important factors preventing people from eating healthy (129-132). In his article, Pinsker utilizes a study done by Caitlin Daniel to illustrate that level of income does affect children’s diet (130). In Daniel’s research, among 75 Boston-area parents, those rich families value children’s healthy diet more than food wasted when children refused to accept those healthier but
In a quote by John Mill, “Does fining a criminal show want of respect for property, or imprisoning him, for personal freedom? Just as unreasonable is it to think that to take the life of a man who has taken that of another is to show want of regard for human life. We show, on the contrary, most emphatically our regard for it, by the adoption of a rule that he who violates that right in another forfeits it for himself, and that while no other crime that he can commit deprives him of his right to live, this shall.” Everyone’s life is precious, but at what price? Is it okay to let a murderer to do as they please? Reader, please take a moment and reflect on this issue. The issue will always be a conflict of beliefs and moral standards. The topic
Yoga is a discipline both involving physical and mental control that originated in India. The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word, "yug", meaning union and it means the joining of the individual spirit with the universal spirit. The type of yoga known as Hatha Yoga, ("Ha"- sun, "tha"-moon) is what is most commonly practiced and this yoga involves the path of the mind and body and is the most physical. There are eight limbs or steps of Hatha Yoga, the first step being the five Yamas. There are five yamas and these concern your behavior to the world.
The movie trailer “Rio 2”, shows a great deal of pathos, ethos, and logos. These rhetorical appeals are hidden throughout the movie trailer; however, they can be recognized if paying attention to the details and montage of the video. I am attracted to this type of movies due to the positive life messages and the innocent, but funny personifications from the characters; therefore, the following rhetorical analysis will give a brief explanation of the scenes, point out the characteristics of persuasive appeals and how people can be easily persuaded by using this technique, and my own interpretation of the message presented in the trailer.
Meditation has the reputation of being practiced solely by lone monks and gurus sitting in lotus position humming a mantra, but over the course of the lecture it was possible to establish that it was not true. Meditation can be done by anyone willing to do it regardless of religion, age, gender, or any other factor that could play into it. Aside from that, meditation has scientific backing to its logic and why people should do it. In the video lectures, a study involving brain scans and meditation was mentioned several times.
One objective of the yoga class was for all students to learn each yoga move as the class progressed. We fulfilled this objective through Skinner’s Operant Conditioning, Observational Learning, Lave’s Situated Learning Theory and the Direct Instruction Approach. Another objective for the class was to hold yoga positions for substantial amounts of time in order to...
In Mark Singleton’s Yoga Body: The Origins of Modern Posture Practice, delves into the history and origins of the practice of yoga as well as its expansion and presence in modern society. Singleton begins by discussing yoga as a modern postural practice. Traditional Indian yoga did not emphasize the postural, physical aspects of yoga that have been so popularized in modern, Western culture, but rather it was emphasized as a spiritual road to Enlightenment. Singleton argues that the beginning of modern yoga as a form of exercise began with Hindu aims to develop a form of exercise unique to India in response to the European and British rise in popularity of masculine strength.
You get to learn the yoga postures and asanas from a trained yoga instructor. Your mind and body will feel relaxed and energized since you will be practicing yoga several times a day. This week’s analysis is associated with the yoga class provided online to help with stress reduction. The first term that I came across was psychophysiology and how this principle is based on the mind and body being one and how our thinking affects all physiology. This principle was the perfect definition of yoga because yoga focuses on how the mind and body connects with each other. It gives you a sense of relaxation throughout your mind and body together. Furthermore, the yoga that was in the video was a yoga style called hatha. Which practices asana (yoga postures) and pranayama (breathing exercises). According to the book, this practices helps bring peace to the mind and body and prepare our body to do deeper exercises. The art of breathing was mentioned during the exercise and in the book. Breathing is very important when trying to unite the mind, body, and spirit. So, having slow, deep breathes was a main focused during the exercise. Another term that was used in the video was the art of stretching, which allows us to become aware of our flexibility of our muscle while moving. Lastly, the art of balance is significant because it allows us to move into the next form of position on both sides of our body. Some of the workouts pose that was mention in the textbook that I did was two knees to the chest, cobra, and head of cow. Overall, hatha
The goal of this study was to identify the ways in which engaging in yoga practices would alter psychological well being, and allow people to engage more fully in their lives and flourish in health and happiness. The pre and post test set up of this study allowed the researchers to see the ways in which students had been affected by their participation in the yoga teacher training. Yoga training students were engaged in a four week program. They were administered tests and the beginning of the study, prior to engaging in the program, at the end of the program, after completion, and then again at a 3 month follow up. Multiple factors were assessed, however the significant and important ones which relate directly to our understanding of healthy, happiness and wellness and the course content are extremely
Yoga practices can be built around concepts like conditioning (preparation), synchronization, concentration, relaxation, and self-reliance. These have been elaborated in “Teaching Yoga” – a publication of The Yoga Institute. Yoga teaching/learning should be experience based, i.e. the student should gain direct experience of the subject taught. Here the skill and knowledge of the teacher comes into full play. A dedicated and dynamic teacher creates an atmosphere for learning.
