When it comes to eating lunch or dinner with a few friends, most of us are very indecisive with where we want to go. I don’t mind sitting in the car and putting our minds together and sharing thoughts on what’s worth eating at the time, certain cravings or anyplace that is new or ‘most hyped’ which most young adults would say if the place was popular or found to be well known on social media. I use an app to help me with my choices of eating, and I am not ashamed of it.
The closest approach I take when it comes to eating is using the Yelp app on my phone which provides many locations shown around the area and filtering exactly what’s a popular place to eat or at least near me. I have had many experiences with the Yelp app, and I could say I use this app to help me choose on what to eat for about 3-4 times every week. No matter what, if I chose to eat at home or out, it can still be healthy or unhealthy food that I consume. It all depends on me and how I feel about it. I believe that most people would eat to just feed themselves because eating food is important, it is part of surviving, but to myself, I think it is best to always think over what’s good enough or healthy enough that I should eat. There isn’t a wrong or right choice over healthy food and unhealthy food. I understand my own food pattern when I go out to eat a lot with friends or family, but over time I do think over my decisions and change it up a bit. I would use to eat whatever that was new or popular or anything that I heard that sounded interesting to eat. Today many college students are faced with eating a poor diet, because they do not have the money or the time to eat properly. With this in mind, I am going to research what college students are eating and how they obtain the food. Food plays a pivotal role in our everyday lives, yet so much about the production of it goes overlooked. There is plenty of literature that attempts to shine a light on these secrets. From Belasco’s Why Study Food, he lays out the premise of a “food triangle” highlighting identity, convenience, and responsibility guiding our food-related decisions to Micheal Pollan’s detailed description of the processes of our popularly produced items, these informative resources are often not encountered. Most also admitted that their eating habits were routinely unhealthy, and that when they did order at a fast food restaurant, they thought first about what they want to avoid rather than what they want, namely salads. they agreed that upon deciding to dine in a fast food restaurant, they have usually already accepted that they will not be eating healthy, and that signage has little opportunity to change that. When looking at the menus of each restaurant, participants also agreed that the more pictures featured on a menu indicated to them that it was a less healthy restaurant overall, but it was still the first thing they noticed. They also noted that overall they did not tend to notice calorie count or fat free options very often.
“Don’t Blame the Eater” is an article by David Zinczenko that explains to Americans, specifically overweight young Americans, about the risks eating at fast food restaurants and its cause of affecting one’s health. In his article, he tries to address the issue about America’s food industries by using literal devices such as tone, logos, ethos, diction, and organization in order to spread his message. He begins his article by addressing the topic and as he continues writing, he supports his topic by writing about personal experience and moves onto the reasons why his topic in a serious issue. Although he shows an overall clear progress, he does tend to have a few problems with his writing that could be improved.
In any countries meals, include much more than food, they mean families are able to get together, friends are able to laugh, and overall emotions and experiences are shared over food. With the growth of fast food culture and diet culture in America, the emotions and experiences are taken out of eating and simply replaced with a mechanized action, chewing and digestion. The reveals how culture have moved away from a more family and people orientated culture to a more self and competition oriented one. Everyone is out for themselves, they are not looking to share a meal with their competition, but instead waiting the get on the next diet fad in order to beat them out of the game. Pollan reiterates these ideas in his book by mentioning the interchanging of culture that comes with food, and by stripping food of this culture we are essentially stripping ourselves from our community and our ancestors that were raised by the same food.

Food is a great obsession to human beings; it also can say something about us beyond what we decide to put in our mouths. Michael Pollan’s research shows that we are not really eating healthy we are convenient eaters. We much prefer quantity over quality, and this is the reason why we have an issue with obesity today, however, eating doesn’t have to be complicated. Yes, we need to worry about how we eat but not to the extent where it is unhealthy. Food is everywhere it’s a part of our lives. Without it we wouldn’t survive, but are we taking the easy way and eating too unhealthy? Is eating unhealthy all we have really known? What can our food choices say about us, beyond what we choose to put into our mouths? Is being defined by our food a bad thing? How does Social Media influence how we eat?
People eat food every day without thinking twice about it, because it is a necessity for us to live. How often do you think about what is in the foods that you eat? How many calories does it have? Are there any vitamins and minerals in it? Is it high in fat? For most of us and especially college students who live a busy life on the go, the answer to that question is probably no. Since becoming a recent graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania Academy of Culinary Arts, I have been more interested in food and what people are eating. Also since more young Americans are becoming obese I want to find out what they are eating and where. Going to college and seeing how students have poor eating habits I want to find out why they are eating this way. Is it because they are away from home for the first time? Or is it because that is the only food that is available for them? I also want to find out if students would eat healthier if it was provided for them? My hypothesis is that students eat unhealthy because it is more convenient for them. There is usually no time to cook a homemade meal and most college students are always in a hurry so it is easier to pick up takeout. Also most college students don’t know how to cook. I also believe that most college students don’t care if the food is unhealthy for them, as long as it tastes good. Hopefully, in the following pages I will uncover the wide world of college eating.

Food is essential in everyone’s daily life. Keeping an eye on my personal eating diets is very helpful to live a healthy life. The food diary is recorded once a week, with information of the food I eat during the day and my initial observations. My experience is very enlightening. There are evident changes of my eating and living habits, which leads me to comprehend the interactions between student life and the backstory of food better.
