Everyday people can be faced with a life-or-death situation such as a natural disaster like an earthquake or hurricane. When the disaster strikes and you are in need of rescue, should you be the one held responsible? The story of Evans Monsignac is truly remarkable as he finds himself in the middle of an earthquake. “As soon as I finished selling the last batch of rice the earthquake happened. Suddenly things were just flying all over and flattening me," he recalls. "I said 'Oh Lord, I'm dying.' I tried to turn to the right, but I was pinned down by rock, I tried to turn to the left, I was pinned down with rock." Eventually, Monsignac was rescued a shocking twenty-seven days later. In the book The Life Of Pi, the main character, Pi, is faced with a situation that he had no control over. “The family decides to leave India with their animals and sail to Canada, but while traveling, their boat is stuck by a violent storm and sinks. Pi escapes on a lifeboat with four of the family’s animals” (Martel 203). Pi had no control of the storm and the boat sinking, and now Pi is in a life-or-death situation that he did not want to be in. One of the most common situations people are put in, which is not their fault, is natural disasters. “Between 1994 and 2013, EM-DAT recorded 6,873 natural disasters worldwide, which claimed 1.35 million lives or almost 68,000 lives on average each year.” Most of these people could not control where or when the disaster would hit making them not very prepared. If people are not prepared for a situation they have a higher chance of dying, but even Sherpas are very well prepared and still die. Sherpas spend months in training before they are sent to guide tourists on Mount Everest, yet Sherpas are still killed by unpredictable things they can not control. “On April 18th, at about 6:30 a.m. local time, an avalanche swept down off the west shoulder of Everest and killed 16 climbers (Schaffer 217).” Now all these men were Sherpas who trained for countless hours and are still killed. Although that can be true, as an American you pay taxes and a part of that goes to “four health insurance programs — Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace subsidies — together accounted for 25 percent of the budget in 2015, or $938 billion.” Americans should have the security of knowing their bill is paid for due to the amount of money taxes
