In high school, writing essays was my weakest link. When I began my first semester of college, I still had that trouble in my first writing composition class. I improved significantly from gaining organization and length. When I started my second writing composition class, my grades for my paper sky rocketed! The essays I have written though out this semester have shown improvements in context and organizations, however, I still have some room for improvement on reasoning’s and thesis statement. While reading through my essays for this semester, I noticed a few strengths. My first strength is my ability to bring an essay to a close. In the essay titled “Healthy Options on Campus” I bring everything I discussed in the paper to one sentence then at the end I include a goal UTSA has had for years. Indicating that if UTSA were to bring healthy options to their university they could have the opportunity to become a pier one school (Conclusion: “Healthy Options On Campus”). Next, I have a strong suit in writing about background information. For example, in my second essay titled “Racial Profiling” I discussed into great detail on what racial profiling is and how the Bill of Rights states racial profiling. I also have a few weaknesses. My first weakness are that my paragraphs are jumpy. This shows in both of my essays, “Healthy Options on Campus” and “Racial Profiling”. Transitioning from high school to college can be overwhelming. Before English 1301, I thought that I did not have to worry about being prepared for college. I quickly realized that my little background in writing essays was not going to be enough for college. Writing is not just something that I will use in English classes. In college, I will have to use effective writing skills in all my classes to complete research papers, essay tests and communicate to professors. Throughout my education, writing strategies persisted to be something that did not come easy to me. I dreaded writing because I could never find ways to get my thoughts down on paper. Ironically, a class that petrified me due to the amount of writing that was required ended up helping me in so many ways. English 1301 and my professor prepared me so much for college and real life.
One of the biggest weaknesses I have is not being able to transition from paragraphs effectively. In the Lord of the Flies and Asher Lev essays, I did not create a good flow through the essay, making it sort of choppy. I can improve this by increasing my knowledge of transition words and not expanding ideas too much. Also I have to work on slowing down my pace with writing and watch out for grammar mistakes. A way I could improve this is learning the placement of quotations in sentences, that they should be after a period in some cases. Another idea that I have to improve on is choosing the best evidence for my claim. In the Lord of the Flies essay, I had not chose the best evidences and it did not effectively show examples of the claim. I have to learn how to pick evidence that best suits my point of the argument and that I can tie in with my

Throughout this semester we have had to write many types of essays. Although this is a college English class there is still room for improvement. I made much improvement during the semester of the class. I was able to identify my weaknesses. I learned how to make improvements to the areas I was having problems in. Although each essay we did was different I was able to begin with one essay and throughout the semester turn it into two other essays. I was able to change my style of writing to fit the type of audience I was working with. I will continue to work on my writing and keep improving it.
Writing essays was never my forte, it just never came easy to me like it would to others. Since other subjects came easy to me and I had to focus more than others on writing, I had a negative attitude toward the process as a whole. During this summer semester, I was able to grow as a writer, and gain a more positive attitude toward how I write and a better feel for writing in college. Writing a paper is a process in which there are many different stages. In high school I would never write outlines or any sort of pre planning work. Other struggles I encountered in my writing were my theses, and framing quotes.
In this essay I think I had more strengths than weaknesses. This was one of my favorite essays I have ever written. The reason being was because I knew so much about the topic that I really enjoyed writing this essay. One strength I had was the content of the essay. All of my ideas were supported with evidence. Throughout my whole educational career I have always struggled in writing. In 2nd grade I had to stay at after school for writing tutorials to improve on spelling, in 4th grade I never went to recess because I was unable to finish my writing prompts in during the dedicated timeline, and throughout high school I would have panic attacks when trying to write essay. The strengths that I discovered that I did well in my creative writing were having a clear voice, opened strong which hooked the reader’s attention, very detailed, good imagery, good climax, reflection, and suspense. My strongpoint out of each of my three literary works for my portfolio I feel would have to be my freelance poetry’s because of the rawness of poems and I have more background and poetry. My weaknesses in my portfolio were that I was sometimes too detailed, such as when I spent so much time describing fashion labels in my fiction short story, I feel that this error to spend so much detail came from my background with having former internships for fashion companies where I did fashion blogging and product descriptions, however I see that in fiction it is not needed. I learned that the details that I give in my writing must be relevant to what is going on, I had some structural and style problems, I failed to indent in my dialogues, and there were some grammar mistakes. Overall I feel as though each flaw that I had initially in my writing was fixed for the final draft because I took in what Professor Powell and my classmates instructed me to improve
Strengths and Weaknesses Throughout the Mid-SEE I have written reflections on my writing and participated in group activities. I have received comments from my peers and suggestions to help with revising my paper. With the help of my professor, Professor Church and my classmates, I was able to comprehend their suggestions to me to make my essay better and by revising my classmate’s essays, I was able to point out mistakes that I might have made in my essay, which made me go back to my essay and check and see if I had mistakes that just flew by my eyes. I have come to understand what my strengths and weaknesses are in my writings. What I tend to do wrong in my papers is trying to get the topic to stay on the topic throughout the paper.
I have truly enjoyed discovering my voice as a writer this school year. Developing my personal writing process will benefit my high school journey and create future opportunities in life. While I have always enjoyed writing, at times I found the process laborious since writing has never come naturally to me. I have worked diligently on improving my writing, and assembling my portfolio has led me on a literary journey as I explored and evaluated my work. Over the last few years, I have practiced brainstorming and organizing my ideas before beginning my essay. Properly outlining my ideas equated to a well written thesis and overall organized essay. Over the past semester, I have found the most challenging part of this course to simply be the transition from high school composition classes to college. Because writing expectations are so different in college than in high school, even with AP and Dual Enrollment “college level” classes, I first found myself being overwhelmed with the pressure to write the perfect first draft. The pressure came from knowing how much a final draft of a paper contributed to my grade. This left me sitting in front of my computer for hours at a time with thoughts of what I wanted to say racing through my head, but unable to deliver these thoughts into organized, structured sentences. I learned, through writing my persuasive essay, that instead of trying to write the paper start to finish and already in its perfect form, it is easier for me to look at the paper through its different components and focus on them individually, then work to best organize my ideas fluently.
My first weakness would be when I attempt to write an essay I tend to not make myself very clear about what I am trying to explain or argue so that is a big negative part. It certainly does not make the essay quite valid because my opinion cannot be understood or if it’s backed up or not. For example, in “Gun Control” I made the argument that I was against gun control so wanting lighter gun control. The first day I walked into Freshman Composition I had the idea that everything assigned was going to be extremely frustrating and difficult, as this is a college class. Equally important, my expectations for the class was to earn at least a B, further my writing abilities, and learn more about college. As the semester started, I noticed that my writing was not at the college level and I needed to learn how to improve it. Along with improving my writing, I was also able to learn about college life.
