Writing 101 Reflection

How you write will determine how you will succeed in most classes at a higher-level educational institute. From what I have learned from taking a Writing 101 course at Pacific Lutheran University, writing styles in college drastically differ from how we tend to write in high school. Most of the writing done in high school consist of a 5-paragraph structure, starting with an introductory paragraph, followed by 3 supporting examples, and a simplistic conclusion restating the thesis. For college, however, this type of writing feels limiting. In fact, college goes beyond writing from a mere appalling 5 paragraphs and allows their students to explore their writing by adding their own voice and opinions. Taking the Writing 101 course has definitely improved my writing skills and made me into a confident writer. These improvements I’ve made to my writing was done by making changes to my drafting, elaborating and proofreading and revising processes.
Without a decent introductory, I can’t write as fluidly as I want to. Starting my papers has always been the most challenging part of writing for me. It still is, but I found ways to overcome that. …show more content…

I could have written my essay about the negative effects of student debt having an impact on the nursing degree over and over, but it wouldn’t have been very much persuasive. Elaborating helps me improved my writing, especially when using sources to support my ideas. For example, I started an idea in my essay about having unpaid educational debt can cause people to lose their jobs (Huynh, 4). After finding a source that can back up my point, I elaborate what the source is about, provide the background details, and conclude how the source can prove my point by referring back to the thesis and topic of my essay.
