Once upon a time, an AECL inexperienced coder was given a hefty job to write a code for a radiation therapy machine. Due to lack of experience, he completed the code with many loop holes and errors. Even though, he knew that his code was imperfect, he did not say anything to his company. His flaws were not even noticed by AECL as they did not independently review the software code. The problem with the machine was that the high-power electron beam was activated instead of the intended low power beam. This resulted in 100 times intended radiation being given to the patients. One of the victim of the machine was Ray, an accountant suffering from cancer. When Therac – 25 fired an intense radiation on him, he felt as if he was electrocuted. He …show more content…
started screaming and ran out of the treatment room to complaint about the machine. The manager ignored his complaint and asked him to take rest. Several days later, radiation burns appeared on Rex’s body and he started showing symptoms of radiation poisoning.
After few weeks, he eventually died a painful death. On his death bed, Rex promised that he would take revenge of all the people who were in any way responsible for what he is suffering. The next day, the manager who ignored his complaint met with a serious accident and was hospitalized. According to the reports, he would be normal within few months. But that night something strange happened. When the hospital was quiet and most of the employees went back home, the nurse responsible for taking care of the manager went wild. She went inside the manager’s room, woke the manager up, and started shouting “I said I will come, and here I am”. The manager tried escaping but was not able to get up. It was as if some force was not allowing him to wake up from his bed. The nurse started biting him and stabbed him with the instruments present there. The next morning, the nurse and the manager were both found dead. Everyone were assuming that the nurse murdered the manager and then committed suicide. But, the postmortem reports showed that the nurse died an hour before the manager. Everyone ignored thinking that the report was
erroneous. The chief investigator ordered the report once again but was given the same information the was given earlier. A resident living next to the hospital came to the investigator and reported that last night he heard someone shouting “I said I will come and here I am” in a strange voice. After, going through past patient’s cases, everything started making sense for the chief investigator. He organized a team and rushed to the Therac-25 operator. The operator looked good and was doing his work joyfully. Then, the chief investigator made small teams and sent them to all the personals that are in some manner related to Therac – 25. From one his team he received a bad response stating that the coder responsible for writing the program for Therac – 25 was found dead. When the chief investigator reached the site, he found the victim’s body in pieces. After a month long investigation, there were not able to figure out the culprit and had to close the case due to lack of evidence.
However, all of the participants continued to administer up to three-hundred volts. These were everyday “normal” people that functioned successfully in society. Slater had the opportunity to interview one of the participants of Milgram’s experiment, one which happened to follow through with the shocks all the way to the very last one. During the interview the participant stated, “You thought you were really giving shocks, and nothing can take away from you the knowledge of how you acted” (Slater, 59). These words came from the mouth of an “average joe” that never knew what he was capable of before the experiment. With these words, we are reminded that we are not as “nice” as we’d like to think we
So the Yankees were after the master and he didn’t want the Yankees to get the chest of gold and wealth that he smuggled from them, so what the master did was he took Big Liz, a shovel, the chest full of gold and a tree sapling. The master and Big Liz were on their way to the swamp that is still to this day in Dorchester County. They walked the great muddy and dangerous waters of Briar swamp. Big Liz and the master found a spot and big enough for Big Liz.Big Liz was instructed to dig a hole to bury the chest filled with gold and with her in it as well. When Big Liz was almost to the point where her head was below ground, the master then said to Big Liz “you traitor” then chopped her head off. Big Liz’s master buried the wealth and big Liz so that no one would find her or the wealth from the north or the Yankees, then the master put a sapling over the wealth on the same location so that he could find it later as he was leaving the master felt a strange feeling that he was being watched, so an ease strange light mist came out of the swamp and the master
On a tedious Thursday afternoon, the body of an extrusive racketeer named Fannin was found at Ernie’s Lunchroom by police officers. In testimony of the only witness, the proprietor and the only employee, Ernie has said “The murderer had leaned against the wall while firing at point-blank range”. There is also an imprint of the supposed homicidal murderer on one of the walls and the cash register has just been rung up at $8.75. The police believe that person C is the murderer from the hand position of the utensils/hand positions, the relation among persons B, D, and E, and the identification of the Y and X footprints. The victim of this heinous crime is also controversial and the media are portraying Fannin as a criminal due to his reputation of racketeering.
The narrator murders an old man who he is meant to be taking care of. He claims to have nothing against the man and says that he loves him. Regardless of this, he finds the mans filmy, vulture-like eye to be disturbing and thinks this is a valid enough reason to kill him. Montresor feels insulted by his colleague, Fortunado and believes that it is now his duty to end his life. Both claim to not have anything against his victim other than one small detail, being either and eye or an insult, and feel that they are justified in wanting them dead. They both meticulously plan out what they are going to do to their victim long before they carry out their actions. Neither the old man or Fortunado had any idea that their murderer had any reason to want them dead and had no way of anticipating what was doing to happen to them. The narrator smothers the old man with his mattress, chops up his body, and stuffs him in the floorboards. Montresor leads a very d...
The learners were a part of Milgram’s study and were taken into a room with electrodes attached to their arms. The teachers were to ask questions to the learners and if they answered incorrectly, they were to receive a 15-450 voltage electrical shock. Although the learners were not actually shocked, the teachers believed they were inflicting real harm on these innocent people.... ... middle of paper ...
In 1917 a young female right out of high school started working at a radium factory in Orange, New Jersey. The job was mixing water, glue and radium powder for the task of painting watch dials, aircraft switches, and instrument dials. The paint is newly inventive and cool so without hesitation she paints her nails and lips with her friends all the while not knowing that this paint that is making them radiant, is slowly killing them. This was the life of Grace Fryer. Today there are trepidations on the topic of radiation from fears of nuclear fallout, meltdowns, or acts of terrorism. This uneasiness is a result of events over the past one hundred years showing the dangers of radiation. Although most accidents today leading to death from radiation poisoning occur from human error or faults in equipment, the incident involving the now named "radium girls" transpired from lack of public awareness and safety laws. (introduce topics of the paper)
To the character and to the author, it seems that ghastly nature murder and the immoral approach of treachery is merely an element of reality. This story is a true representation of author’s anguish and torment nature.
Radium attacked the skeletal system of the workers because it is an analog of calcium. The calcium in the bones of the workers was essentially replaced with radium, which is highly unstable and radioactive. It emits ionizing alpha particle, and gamma rays radiation which causes damage to the human body. This led to the “honeycombing and cancer (Langer, 1987). The evidence of the damage was apparent when they felled to heal from bone trauma and damage. Without true calcium, the bones could not repair normally. This resulted in the painful death of many of the workers and countless side effects to them and their offspring. All of which could have been avoided if Radium Dial had employed a few safety measures to protect their workers instead of their profits. Despite the suffering of the Radium Girls and their loved ones, many of the safety standards for handling radioactive materials are in direct response to the research conducted on the former workers and their remains. They have been immortalized for their
Catherine Genovese, a twenty-eight year-old who was on her way home in her build-up neighborhood in a late night shift as a bar manager. She was a manager in Queens, New York, but that night she was suddenly attacked by a man named Winston Moseley with a knife. Catherine was screaming and pleading for help that she got stabbed, but nobody comes to help her even though they heard her yelling for help. People not just didn't try to help, but didn´t even refuse to help her call the police. They didn't want to help or call the police because they didn't want to be involved in it. Murderer Moseley saw lights coming nearby and knew people were watching him , so he escaped and left Catherine there injured. Catherine was dragging herself towards a doorway bleeding, she could survive at this point, but later Moseley the attacker came back and started doing the same thing that he was doing to Catherine because he said in the court that nobody wants to help her or try to stop him for attacking. As badly
Radiation therapists work closely with patients to fight cancer. According to Health Care Careers, Oncologists, Dosimetrists and nurses are some of the professionals that a radiation therapist works with while caring for a cancer patient. This group of professionals will determine a specialized treatment plan. The first step usually includes a CT scan performed by a radiologist to find the exact area that needs to be targeted with x-rays. Next, the therapist uses a special machine that emits radiation called a Linear Accelerator. They use this machine during a treatment called external beam therapy. During this process, the Linear Accelerator will project x-rays at targeted cancer cells or tumors. Another therapist will be in a different room monitoring the patient’s viral signs until the procedure is over. The external therapy l...
While one person lays with their wrists circumscribed to the worn leather of the gurney, another person holds two skin-piercing needles. The individual holding the needles is an inexperienced technician who obtains permission from the United States federal government to murder people. One needle is held as a precaution in case the pain is too visible to the viewers. Another dagger filled with a lethal dosage of chemicals is inserted into the vein that causes the person to stop breathing. When the cry of the heart rate monitor becomes monotone, the corrupt procedure is complete. Lying in the chair is a corpse when moments ago it was an individual who made one fatal mistake that will never get the chance to redeem (Ecenbarger). Although some people believe that the death
