The Wright brothers made the first motorized aircraft, that flew a distance of 852 feet in 59 seconds.To make this happen the Wright brothers had to put a lot of thought into it, some of the important details that were key to making the airplane fly where, the wings, propulsion system and engine. The dimensions of the wing span is 40 feet, the brothers had to make one wing 4 inches longer than the other to compensate for the weight of the engine on the opposite side. The area of the plane's wings was 510 square feet.They also built the wings to sag just a little for less cross wind resistance.The fabric was added to the wings to make it more aerodynamic.The Wright brothers put a strong wire under the wing so it would be able to carry
a person with out bending. This airplane had two large slow turning propellers that were made of laminated spruce wood and each were 8 feet in diameter. A hatchet and draw knife were used to carve the blades. The ends of the blades were wrapped with fabric to stop the wood from splitting.The wright brothers got their idea from wind tunnel tests.The wrights critical thinking ability and engineering of the propellers offered greater convenience. The airplane had a 4 cylinder engine with an aluminum crankcase. They used aluminum because it was lightweight. It produced 12 Horsepower, it used a quart and a half of a tank of gas, and the engine was cooled with water and the gas was gravity fed. The 4 cylinders were made out of cast iron and made to fit into the aluminum crankcase. which would extend and make a water jacket around the cylinders. In conclusion the wright brothers put a lot of thought into the wings, propulsion system and the engine of the first motorized airplane. By doing all of this they were successful at flying the aircraft for the very first time. And in time they improved everything about the plane.

In the book The Invention Of Wings there were many themes written all over it. Though I found that the theme in this book is, everyone should be treated the same no matter the color of your skin. For example, in the book all of Mr. and Mrs. Grimke slaves were treated horrible. Unlike Sarah, at a very young age wasn’t blind on how badly the slaves were being treated. Sarah didn’t believe in any human being treated the way they were being treated. Action speaks louder then words and Sarah definitely proved that when she was given Handful, as her own personal handmaiden slave. Thought the course of time man has constantly sought to better both himself and mankind through creation and invention. From the first time a caveman rubbed two sticks together and discovered fire to the design and development of the Saturn 5 rocket which propelled by that same fire carried man from the earth to the moon. One can argue over whether on not this invention or that was the greatest. I intend to focus my attention on evolution of just one of those technologies the jet engine, and show the importance of its impact in our world.
Flight is one of the most important achievements of mankind. We owe this achievement to the invention of the airfoil and understanding the physics that allow it to lift enormous weights into the sky.
The trials and tribulations of flight have had their ups and downs over the course of history. From the many who failed to the few that conquered; the thought of flight has always astonished us all. The history of flying dates back as early as the fifteenth century. A Renaissance man named Leonardo da Vinci introduced a flying machine known as the ornithopter. Da Vinci proposed the idea of a machine that had bird like flying capabilities. Today no ornithopters exist due to the restrictions of humans, and that the ornithopters just aren’t practical. During the eighteenth century a philosopher named Sir George Cayley had practical ideas of modern aircraft. Cayley never really designed any workable aircraft, but had many incredible ideas such as lift, thrust, and rigid wings to provide for lift. In the late nineteenth century the progress of aircraft picks up. Several designers such as Henson and Langley, both paved the way for the early 1900’s aircraft design. There are many inventions of the future that people either know or hope will happen and some inventions that people have never thought that would happen in this or the next lifetime. For instance, one piece of future technology that I believe may come to pass is the invention of flying cars. Since the time of being young and watching the Jetsons, many people have been waiting to see the first flying car. While bringing up the idea of a flying car to a lot of people would seem absurd or downright impossible to some, I actually believe that it is very much so possible to create given how far technology has come in the past few decades. I think that it is a very logical conclusion to assume that at some point in the future engineers, car makers, and others will start to pursue other alternatives to avoiding traffic jams and other problems on the road, and instead begin to examine the possibilities of taking to the air as an alternative solution. There is much talk about it over the internet and many people would like to try flying cars. While it would greatly improve traffic for those that prefer staying on the ground, it may prove dangerous in the beginning because of accidents in the air with other cars, planes, trees, and buildings. Some would say though, that the convenience would outweigh the risks because there would not be traffic jams, or detours because of road work. These cars would need something like a GPS system and an anti-wrecking system so people would not run into each other or other objects (How Flying Cars Will Work).
The Wright brothers grew up in West Dayton, Ohio, and ever since they were children they were destined for greatness. Wilbur Wright was born on April 16, 1867, in Millville, Indiana, and Orville was born four years later in Dayton, Ohio, on August 19 (Kelly 5). The brothers’ parents were Milton and Susan Wright, and their siblings consisted of two older brothers and one younger sister (Weir 5). Almost as instantly as they were conscious of having their own interests, Wilbur and Orville were extremely intrigued in mechanics (Kelly 5).
