Before the Second World War began Hollywood’s purpose lied within entertainment for the American people. After the war started, the main focus shifted to wartime propaganda. Film was used to display the war in a way that did not show its true colors—including the censorship of soldier causalities and other negative connotations that are a simple fact of war. There was even a time in which some actors became better known to America than politians. Through films, Hollywood began to make a statement of their anti-Nazi beliefs. They began to make motion pictures for American recruitment into the Army as well as many that supported the war effort, and intended to make other Americans more aware of the war’s effect on the United States, and how people can get involved. Many European countries banned these Hollywood films, as they began to affect not only America but many other countries that were involved in the war as well. Hollywood played an important role in making the war seem like a positive thing to the public eye. The government teamed up with the film industry to produce motion pictures advertizing the war effort, and was able to hold a large influence over the American opinion. When the war started, many citizens were unenthusiastic and hesitant to enlist in the military; but as many famous actors—such as James Stewart and Ronald Reagan—began to enlist, it set a prime example for other American citizens to follow. Many actors received much praise for their accomplishments in the war effort, highly encouraging their fellow Americans to consider enlisting as well. This proved to be an excellent way to increase the number of United States soldiers in the war. Movie theatres also played a contributing role in the war, buy coll... ... middle of paper ... ... others want to help as well. This was an excellent way to promote the war effort, as people tend to follow trends set by celebrities. I would only recommend this book to someone who is interested in this topic. The overall appeal of the cinema to the masses was particularly evident during the interwar era. Audiences worldwide wanted to watch the variety of films, particularly American produced films, and they always went back. The visibly attractive and glamorous Hollywood movies often depicted the success of the underdog over unjust authority. Values of cash over culture were often a theme in the early American films and societies with restricted social mobility, such as those in Europe, could dream of such a triumph. The working class and unemployed could fantasise about wealth, fame and freedom which America as a country was portrayed as offering.
There are many adaptations and interpretations on how the English arrived to the Americas and established their colonies. The 2005 film “New World”, written and directed by Terrance Malick, is a film based off the English settlers and how they settled in the Americas in 1607, and the forbidden relationship between John Smith and Pocahontas. Although the film highly exaggerates on some scenes in order to make the history seem more interesting, the film still holds most historical accuracy and is an enjoyable film.
The Revolutionary war, sparked by the colonist’s anger towards taxation without representation, was a conflict between the United States and its mother country Great Britain. This event had been considered the most significant event in the American history. It separated the thirteen colonies from the tyrannical ruling of King George. The revolutionary war was not a big war, “The military conflict was, by the standards of later wars, a relatively modest one. Battle deaths on the American side totaled fewer than 5,000”1. However, the war proved that the thirteen colonies were capable of defeating the powerful Great Britain. Over the years there were many Hollywood films made based on the revolutionary war, 1776, Revolution, Johnny Tremain, and The Patriot. But, no movie has stirred up as much controversy as the Mel Gibbson movie The Patriot. The patriot is very entertaining but it is historically inaccurate. Too much Hollywood “spices” was added to the movie for viewing pleasures.
During the 1940s, America watched far off conflicts brew on the most distant side of both its ocean borders. Despite the fact that authoritatively unbiased, Americans suspiciously looked at the forceful activities of the Germans over the eastern Atlantic and the Japanese over the western Pacific. Impartiality was put aside on December 7th, 1941. Germany and Japan were presently formally the foe. These remote gatherings were presently the center of exceptional investigation. As an after effect of this hostility publicity was unleashed in numerous structures. Most grown-ups saw this in the types of blurbs in shops or in short movies before a motion picture. Yet, for kids, the ascent of another type of writing that got to be well known in the 1930s turned into the door for publicity to be passed on to a more youthful era. The comic book typified the virtues of what it was to battle evil during
World War II presented several new opportunities for African Americans to participate in the war effort and thereby begin to earn an equal place in American society and politics. From the beginning of the war, the black media urged fighting a campaign for a “Double Victory”: a global victory against fascism at the warfront and national victory over racism at the homefront. In spite of the literary and artistic achievements of the Harlem Renaissance, the economic or political gains that the black community expected did not come to light from the African American participation in the First World War. (Perry 89) Thus the black media aimed to obtain that foothold that would bring about racial equality. They emphatically declared that there would be no lessening of racial activism, in order to present a consolidated front to America’s enemies.

The documentary Ken Burns: The War, provided an in depth view on World War II and its impact on the United States from the vantage point of Americans. Residents from Minnesota, Connecticut, Alabama and California attested to the many effects of the war. There were many testaments of the lackadaisical attitudes Americans displayed at the beginning of the war, the impact that the war had on the economy, as well as the impact on the lives of women of every race, the strong sense of family and community, as well as the many issues with race relations during the war given from the viewpoints of actual people whose families were impacted. ...e American Dream. Larry Ceplair and Englund stated in the book The Inquistion in Hollywood, “The destruction of the motion picture Left not only transformed the political atmosphere in Hollywood, but also adversely affected the kind of product which the studios turned out. “ In the early 20th century Hollywood reframed from producing politically controversial films in fear of becoming a target of McCarthy or the HUAC. Anti-communism influences the films produced, films portrayed communism as evil and immoral. The films during the cold war certainly portrayed the political storm between the progressive left and the conservative right. Films such as Ninotchka in 1939, showed anti-communism, guilty of Treason 1949, showed an attack against communism, exploiting the evils of communism was shown in Docudrama. The Red Menace in 1949 showed the immense threat f communism.
Films are necessary in our time period because the human eye can articulate the message intended through sight allowing visual imagination to occur. In the book, world 2 by Max Brooks, he creates a character by the name Roy Elliot who was a former movie director. Roy Elliot manages to make a movie titled “Victory at Avalon: The Battle of the Five Colleges” and some how it goes viral. Similarly, Frank Capra’s film, “Why we Fight” expresses a sense of understanding the meaning of wars. Films do not inevitably portray truth because they display what the film director views as important and beneficial for people to know.
It is no doubt that Martin Scorsese has heavily influenced the emulating of American film making from European influences. He is a prime example of a ‘New Hollywood Cinema’ director, not only from his ethnicity and background, but from his sheer interest in this form
The film industry during World War II played a big role in the war. German Filmmakers were constantly showing false propaganda and films about the United States to make America look like they were the bad people. Meanwhile, American filmmakers slowly realized the type of films German filmmakers were putting out. Sergeant York and The Great Dictator were films that were put out before Pearl Harbor since Americans were still blind to what was really happening overseas. However, when America did get involved in the war many films were shown how females weren’t frail but they played an important role in the war just like the men. The American government wanted play a role in the film industry because they really wanted to show the American people
Since World War II, forms of mass media have significantly changed. The majority of information that was disseminated during World War II was in forms of newspapers, radios, and photos. Over 1,500 cameramen documented World War II with either pictures or video for the world to see (Schickel). A scene in the documentary, “Shooting War: World War II combat cameramen”, a Marine combat cameramen named Richard Brooks asked Lieutenant General Holland Smith ”Mad”, “General, is there a way that we can carry a side arm because we only have our cameras?” the General responded, “I don’t care if the cameras have no film, I want the cameras there in front of you and the cameras there at all times because those are the eyes of the world” (Schickel). The importance of media was one of the efforts that the government wanted to use in order to persuade the American people into supporting the war. A photographer named Jimmy Hare said, "Photographs seem to be the only thing the War department is really afraid of”(Neuman82). The enemi...
