There is a place back in Germany, hidden for good reasons, the secret annex. Two families hid here in World War II.The secret annex that the Franks, the Van Dans, and Mr Dussel all hid out in was about 500 square feet. A annex is a space connected to a bigger building for storage among other things. It is completed with five rooms in all, the bathroom, the kitchen/living area, Peter’s room, Anne’s and Dussel’s room, and the attic. Margot, Mr Frank, and Mrs Frank all slept in the main room. You could get up to the secret annex by going through the hidden door behind the bookcase in Mr. Frank’s office. Dirk van Delft built the secret annex back in the 1900s. It originally was going to be demolished because of its dangering stability. Around one …show more content…
The Van Dans were actually the Van Pels. Mr. Dussel is really Fritz Pfeffer. Turns out they changed the names in the book to make it more “interesting”. They even moved around the rooms they all slept in in the diary. The three Franks, Margot, Mr. and Mrs. Frank, all slept in the attic upstairs. The Van Pels slept in the entrance or main room with their son in the closet. The annex will be standing for years to come. If it wasn’t for the people this building wouldn’t be standing. That place has room for two families to live there for a few years as Anne Frank did. Sure it may be a bit crowded, but it forced them to get along better. If the annex was never built the Franks and their history would have surely vanished. It is a blessing they didn’t destroy that historical site. It brings memories to the old, new ones to the little, and reminds us all of that horrifying war that was all pinned on jews. The poor, innocent jews got blamed for something they didn’t even cause. Hitler saw them as a threat and saw that he had to lock them away. Lucky Anne got the chance to write about the annex before going to the execution
In the book of Anne Frank there are the Van Daan’s and the Franks. Then there's the people that help them which are Mr. Kraler and Miep. the Van Daan’s and Frank’s are in hiding because they were taking jews to concentration camps and had to go into hiding. They were hiding in a place called The Secret Annex in Amsterdam. In my Essay today I will be talking about who showed courage, compassion, and sacrifice.
On an early morning in July of 1942, the Van Daans and Franks meet up for the first time at the annex. All of them are covered in layers of clothing to carry as much to their new home as possible. They are all introduced to each other. Living in the secret annex is Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan, Peter Van Daan, Mr. and Mrs. Frank, Margot, and Anne Frank. Mr. Van Daan is a selfish, greedy man. Mrs. Van Daan likes the finer things, thinks pretty highly of herself and adores her husband. Peter is shy, quiet, and just truly doesn’t say much. Mr. Frank is a kind, caring, leading man. Mrs. Frank is motherly, caring, and sweet. Margo does as others say and tries to keep a low-key profile. Anne is wild and unique. She doesn’t let others push her around, and she is very independent. Everyone in the annex is very different.
Wisps of burnt-out curtains drape over shattered window frames, fluttering helplessly like a bird with injured wings. Pieces of wood collapse snapping once they hit the ground. Smoke swirls around in the wind. No sound can be heard except for the occasional sobs escaping the chapped lips of people visiting what is left of their homes. The once busy city of Amsterdam is now nothing but a city of forgotten souls. In 1942, the Franks and the Van Daans moved into a warehouse located in Amsterdam to escape the perilous world outside, where the Holocaust was taking place. Jews like the Franks and the Van Daans had their rights taken away from them. The Gestapo, the police working for the Nazis, rounded up people to be sent to concentration camps, where people worked to death. Margot Frank was one of them. Many Jews had to leave the country to escape, while the two families, and later on a man named Dussel, lived on the top floor of the warehouse called the Secret Annex. Living in such a small space and having sparse food with so many people was not easy. On weekdays, not a noise was to be made otherwise the workmen below would hear them. Food and other items had to be brought in by Miep and Mr. Kraler, who risked their lives to help the members of the Secret Annex. To keep herself company, Anne Frank wrote in her diary almost every day. Later on, her diary was published, and two authors decided that they would write a play based on the published diary, named The Diary of Anne Frank. Goodrich and Hackett created memorable characters in their play. Among these people, Otto Frank stood out, who emerged as a good leader because he put himself before others, made rough decisions when problems rose, and stayed positive and optimistic even dur...
Throughout the holocaust, many Jews survived by going into hiding to escape the harsh fates and realities that would otherwise await the opressed. The Diary of a Young Girl allows readers to witness and experience a small idea of what Jews in hiding during the holocaust suffered. Some may have lost one's life, but Otto Frank, Anne's Frank's father, survived the holocaust through hiding. The secret annex became the shelter for Otto Frank, his family, and several others Jews starting July sixth, 1942(www.annefrank.org). The annex provided a barrier from the Nazis and death camps for two years before the Gestapo discovered the Franks and others and sent the Jews to concentration camps for the remainder of the holocaust(www.ushmm.org). The others in hiding with Frank lost their lives, leaving Otto Frank the sole survivor from the secret annex. His time in hiding happened to save his life, making him a survivor of the holocaust(www.ushmm.org).
Mr.Dussel was Annes roommate in the annex, he was very strict with Anne. Mr. Van Daan was very selfish. He ate a lot, he smokes and he is overweight. Mrs. van Daan was Mr. van Daan's wife. she only cared about Mr.Van Daan and she loved her stuff.
On July 1942, the Frank family lived their own house and Anne’s cat and moved to their hiding place. Their apartment was left in a state of disarray to create the impression that they had left suddenly, and Otto Frank left a note that hinted they were going to Switzerland. As Jews were not allowed to use public transport, they walked several kilometers from their home, with each of them wearing several layers of clothing as they did not dare be seen carrying luggage. In the secret annex, there are two small rooms, with an adjoining bathroom and toilet, were on the first level, and above that a larger open room, with a small room beside it.
Van Daan, Otto’s former partner that he left stay with them in the attic. There was also quintessential minor characters like Miep Gies, who helped hide the Franks and brought them rations and things from the outside, and Albert Dussel, a dentist who later also hid with the Franks and Van Daans. Conflicts such as Mr. Van Daan’s temper and Anne’s rebellious nature kept the group on edge. Many obstacles and complications throughout the time of their hiding made life difficult for the characters. There never was enough food and everyone was always hungry, but when Mr. Van Daan was caught stealing bread he breached the trust of the group. The climax of play was when an officer of the Nazis army came into the room and ushered everyone out. After 2 long years of hiding, there was no happy ending. Unfortunately everyone died or was killed, excluding Otto Frank, who in the end ultimately found Anne’s diary and was able to tell the tale.
It was the beginning of World War II and the Frank family had to go into hiding after they receive an order for Margot to report to a forced labor camp.(Page 196) Because of the Nazi’s racism toward the Jews, they feared that they were going to have to go Concentration camps or being persecuted. Another Jewish family that came to hide in the attic with the Franks were the Van Daan. Anne received a diary for her birthday. In her diary she writes down the events that occur during their time hiding. The fear of being found is all in everyone's mind all the time. There is lack of food for the people in the attic because they cannot go and buy there own food. In November of 1942 Mr. Kraler found another Jew, named Dussel that was not in hiding and was in need of a safe place to stay, so he said that Dussel could stay in the attic. Being in hiding means that there was no gifts at the Hanukkah celebration until Anne walks in with a bag full of presents for everyone. (page 140 paragraph 11) One example of their fear of being found is the night of the Hanukkah
The setting for The Diary of Anne Frank is in a “Secret Annexe” in Amsterdam, Holland. Anne and her family are not the only people that are hiding in the “Secret Annexe,” the Van Daans live with them also. Anne draws a map in the book to show you a layout of the “Secret Annexe.” It’s pretty large, although with eight people living there, it’s quite crowded.
They had to sacrifice their place to many others -sometimes strangers, their food, and their privacy. At some point all the people in the family dreaded that they allowed so many people into the annex with them, and it caused conflict between the families as well as among family members. An example was when Mrs. Frank lost her temper on Mr. Van Daan and said things like “ I’ve watched you day after day and held my tongue. But not any longer! Not after this! Now I want you them to go! I want him to get out of here!” (620) That is a prime example of how people change when they are locked in the same room, because before the Franks went into hiding, Mrs. Frank would have never snapped on somebody the way that she did. During this time in history, Hitler had all of the Jewish people taken to concentration camps and did unimaginable horrible things to them, so that’s why all the Jews were either taken to the camps, fled to other countries, or went into hiding like the Frank family did. Just being the race that they were took courage alone. Anne and the rest of the family had to have courage and be brave because they wouldn’t have survived through the war if they were cowardly and fearful about where their next meal was coming from or if they were going to be caught in hiding. The Franks also had to give each other courage and keep positive thoughts, even if they did not
Espionage in WWII Many of us can remember playing childhood games when we were younger. One of my personal favorites is hide and seek. My favorite part of the game was when I was hiding and trying to see where the seeker looked while he or she searched. Of course I could have been caught, but it wasn't a big deal at the time.
In the secret annex, the living conditions were horrible. For example, the rooms and space they had available to them were very crowded. Peter, Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan’s son, had the smallest room. His room was as big as a closet, only having a bed for
In 1938, the Frank family applied for visas to the United States but were denied because they were considered to be German Jews (Foray 335). However, this was sadly only the beginning of Anne’s difficulties. Not long after that, “Thirteen-year old Anne Frank began her now-famous diary on June 12, 1942, two years into the German occupation” (Foray 332). Then, in July 1942, as Hitler started invading more and more countries, the Frank family went into hiding in a secret annex located above a business w...
With the rise of Hitler, Otto Frank, Anne’s father, moved his family to Amsterdam in order to escape the escalating persecution of Jews. Anne attended Amsterdam's Sixth Montessori School and throughout the 1930s experienced a normal childhood, free of anti-semitism. For her thirteenth birthday, Anne received the diary that would encase her everlasting story. On July 5th, 1942, Anne’s sister, Margot, received a notice to be deported to a work camp, leaving no choice but to go into hiding immediately. The Secret Annex, their place of hiding, was located in Otto’s Amsterdam office....
By the middle of the movie, Mr. Dussel gets introduced to all of the people living in the secret annex. Mr. Dussel was a dentist. Mr. Dussel moves into the secret annex, and Anne explains the list of rules to him over dinner, explaining the quiet hours. Dussel and Anne have to share a room because there is not enough room for everyone to have their own room. Margot and Anne share a room at the beginning, but Margot gets moved to their parents’ room.
