World War 1, named “The Great War” was the most important event of the 20th Century to me. The war started in 1914 and ended in 1918. The United States was not a nation ready for war in 1914. WW1 was ignited by the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand; he was heir to the throne to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Bound by the nationalism to help the small Serbian state, the Russians came to aid the Serbs when they were attacked. With all of this increasing arms, alliances, and hatred from way back when caused Europe to go into war. “The Triple Entente”, (known as the Allies) infiltrated the British Empire, France, and Russia. “The Central Powers” consisted of Italy, Germany, Bulgaria, later on Ottoman, and Austria-Hungary. America entered the war in April 1917; World War I was a tearful moment for America, a time when an advocate of isolationism in international affairs involved itself in world affairs and began the rise to the economic and military power that America is today. But after America entered three years later, horrific slaughter had stained the nations of Europe. World War I marked the end of the old order in Europe, and the beginning of what has been called the "American Century."
In 1917, when the Tsar fell, that’s when Russia ended their hostile actions against the Central Powers. Even though the Bolsheviks knew this negotiation with Germany would add a huge cost to Russia; they still negotiated the Treaty of Brest-Litovesk with Germany. It started that Bolshevik Russia ceded the Baltic States to Germany and its province of Kars Oblast in the South Caucasus to the Ottoman Empire. And it also gave the Ukraine independence, but all of this still couldn’t stop America from entering in 1918. This war gave the combata...

The Great War defined all the other wars that occurred after it-like all the confusion in Europe, dying empires, new expansionistic ambitions, and the will to show the world something new. But some say that WW2 is the most influential of the 20th Century; without “The Great War” we couldn’t even have this argument about which war was the most influential. The first war started everything; the atomic bomb (we wouldn’t even have that). World War 2 used that (Atomic Bomb) to bomb Japan after they attacked “Pearl Harbor”. Even though WW2 had the most impacted events you have to backtrack them to see how they all started, they will link back to WW1 events in some way. With a small army and a pitiful navy, the U.S. was no match for either side in the great conflagration in Flanders ' Fields.
In the book, America’s Great War: World War I and the American Experience, Robert H. Zieger discusses the events between 1914 through 1920 forever defined the United States in the Twentieth Century. When conflict broke out in Europe in 1914, the President, Woodrow Wilson, along with the American people wished to remain neutral. In the beginning of the Twentieth Century United States politics was still based on the “isolationism” ideals of the previous century. The United States did not wish to be involved in European politics or world matters. The U.S. goal was to expand trade and commerce throughout the world and protect the borders of North America.
World War I, also referred to as the Great War, was global conflict among the greatest Western powers and beyond. From 1914-1918, this turf war swept across rivaling nations, intensifying oppositions and battling until victory was declared. World War I was immediately triggered by the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, however several long-term causes also contributed. The growing development of militarism, the eruption of powerful alliances, as well as the spread of imperialism, and a deepening sense of nationalism, significantly promoted to the outbreak of the Great War.
World War I was a very deadly war with over 100 million human casualties(deaths plus injured). Therefore war is a very transformative event for humanity, because it always affects individuals, societies, and even the world in a pessimistic way.
We've come a long way since the early styles of warfare seen in the American Revolution and the Civil War. World War I was the first war where the United States proved to the world we were a formidable power. Made up almost entirely of immigrants, America sent to Europe an armed force the fight against the Germans. The war brought a divided nation together as one. It represented pride and unity. The World War I victory portrayed the United States as a world superpower. Americans living in the early 1900s saw the war as a "just cause", and supported our actions abroad. World War II came just 20 years later. This time it was a single attack that drew us into the war. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor led us into World War II. The country furious with the cowardly assault; rallied, and stood behind the President's decision to send troops to the South Pacific and Europe. The American view on the war was very supportive. The country went to work manufacturing equipment offsetting the economic failure of the depression the United States was dealing with previous to the war.
Great War, also known as The First World War, lasted for four year (1914 to 1918). It brought a huge development of war technics and weapons. More number of countries had been involved in the Great War than any previous war. It involved the mobilization of the whole nations, not just an enormous army that turned the war into a “total war”. (Clare 6) However, historians are still arguing about the major cause of the World War I. The major cause will be one of the four long-term causes of WWI, which are Militarism, Alliance, Imperialism, and Nationalism. In my opinion, the two major causes would be Alliance and Nationalism. Alliance is an association between two or more countries for mutual benefits that formed with different treaties, while Nationalism is feeling and principles of patriotic.
During WWI, Russia was in dire straits; they were at war with both neighboring and distant countries while also having internal conflicts. Recognizing the need to appease the German war machine, Lenin felt it essential to have the Russian state bound to the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk (Brest-Litovsk). Essentially ceding territory to Germany, this treaty created a sort of buffer between Germany and Russia, allowing the Russians to focus more on internal affairs. However, in April of 1922, Germany and Russia signed yet another treaty; the Treaty of Rapallo had both Germany and Russia renounce territorial and financial claims against each other. To ensure that relations would remain peaceful for at least the near future, Germany and Russia signed the 1926 Treaty of Berlin. Among other things, the purpose of the Treaty of Berlin was to solidify neutrality, sh...
One of the primary major world events that took place in this decade was World War I. This began in 1914 when Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated. The U.S. didn’t get involved with this war, however, until 1917 and stayed involved until it’s ending in 1918. Increasing technology contributed heavily to the fatalities of this war with the inventions of deadly explosives, steel tanks, and poisonous gas (SF Timeline). This double front war for Germany was finally held at a standstill in November of 1918. A peace treaty was signed on June 28, 1919 at Versailles, France, ending the devastating four- year war in Europe. Another important world event that heavily affected the future of the world was The Bolshevik Revolution.
The impact this had on the American economy was the first step towards the Great Depression. The involvement of the U.S. in the war was something that was certain to happen. The war was affecting our economy even before the U.S. was involved and, the American soldiers had to help to end the war before the damage became
In 1905 , Russia had a prerevolution that was put down of the Czar. Instead of learning from this prerevolution, Czar Nicholas II, made a very big mistake by in not introducing some reforms to correct the problems. So because of his actions, the situation grew worse. In 1917, the Russians were fighting in World War I. A good majority of the Russian people were weary and uncontent with the way the war was going and with the Czar's rule. This uncontent along with economic hardships caused riots and demonstrations to break out. The Czar called for the army to put down the revolution as they did in 1905. But the army joined the revolt and the Czar was kicked out of power soon afterwards. A temporary government was set up to decide on what kind of government Russia was gonna set up. Two political parties were set up. The Bolsheviks were one of the two. The leader of the Bolshevik party was a man named Lenin. Lenin was a firm believer of the theories and ideas of Karl Marx. So with his slogan of "Bread, Peace and Land", Lenin gained the support of the peasants and gained control of Russia and setup a communist state.
World War I was another major turning point in history. This turning point consisted in the way war was fought and how it has changed due to the advances in technology that took place during this time in the 1900’s. War was triggered in the Balkans where the Ottoman Empire had once maintained control. Industrialization and technology had both contributed to the advances in the development of weapons. This devastatingly was the cause of millions of deaths in World War I. War was now fought in trenches and they used machine guns as well as tanks and grenades. There was definitely a turning point in the way war would be fought. However, the most important turning point in the war had to be the involvement of the US. The US tried to remain neutral in the war but ended up joining the Allies. Thanks to the US’s involvement, however, the Allies received the help needed to win the war.
Often times the Second World War over shadows the First World War when it comes to discussing a total war because the First World War may be considered a limited war. A limited war has specific goals while a total war involves the entire nation and its destruction. An examination of pre-1914 events and events that occurred from 1914 to1918 reveal the ways in which the First World War was a total war.
There was a major turning point effect after World War I. The major turning point in warfare was the machine gun. The machine gun could shoot 100 bullets in seconds. That was number one turning point of World War I. The second one was the U-boats. The U-boats were submarines that could shoot torpedo under water and sink a ship in minutes. The third one is the central and the allies powers. Nobody ever saw a world war specially countries' gong together and having a war. There was a huge major turning point in World War I that impact the whole world.
World War 1 was called “The Great War”, “The war to end all wars”, and “The first modern war”. It had many causes and a few repercussions and I will describe them in detail.
losses in blood and treasure, World War I remains the paradigmatic conflict of the modern age, not only
This war as referred by some people was indeed a great war. It affected all the nations of the world, from Europe to Africa. Today its effects are still felt. It was mainly among Britain, Austria, United States, Germany, Russia and France. These nations mobilized masses in other countries to fight against their enemies. There was political reformation in the whole world. The war is believed to have been greatly fueled by religious differences. Most of the political reformation was on religious grounds. Serbia matched with Russia as they shared the same doctrines, Croatia joined forces with Austria. Bosnia supported the Ottoman Empire. The war was catalyzed when Germany declared its support for Austria against the Serbs. This angered Russia and awakened British and French. Treaties were formed and the result was Europe being divided into two blocs. France Britain and Russia came to fight against Germany, Italy and Austria. Diplomacy disappeared and it was all about war.
