For A long time it was a known factor that one shore-based gun equaled three naval guns of the same caliber, due to the steadiness of the coastal gun which allowed for significantly higher accuracy than those on naval ships due to them being. Land-based guns also benefited in most cases from the additional protection of walls or earth mounds. Coastal artillery is an age old force that has survived and evolved to this present day. Coastal artillery is the use of weapons and maneuvers to defend the coast. This has been a very important use in combat for centuries. The role of coastal Artillery in defending nations against naval attacks and Air attacks decreased drastically due to the uses of guided missiles and Jet aircraft however the use of surface to ship missiles provided to an adequate upgrade in protecting coastlines. But the use of jets in a way made Coastal artilleries obsolete. Up until War II era the only way an attack could hit a nation was by way of ship. …show more content…
However looking further back, one of the first known uses of coastal artillery was noted during the war between Ferdinand I of Portugal and Henry II of Castile Portuguese troops used cannons to defend the coast Lisbon against the Castilian navy.
Coastal artillery has played a vital part in defending against naval invasions in about every war fought since the Middle Ages. In the United States Army the Coastal Artillery Corps came alive during World War I when in 1901 the US Army Artillery was created and divided into two divisions, 126 Companies of Heavy Artillery and 30 Companies of Light Field Artillery. It was used to protect foreign coastal lines and our own. A large number of the deaths in world war one were attributed the weapons used in the battles on the coast. Nearly 80 percent of soldiers lost their lives from the use of Coastal
Artillery. The United States has a rich history of uses of Coastal artillery When the United States in 1783, the Coast Artillery defense fortifications were in poor condition. Concerned by the outbreak of war in Europe in Congress constructed a unit of Artillerists and Engineers to design, build, and garrison forts. Congress designated a group of scholars to study coast defense needs, and issued funds to create a number of Coastal Artillery fortifications that would become known as the First System. There would be two more additions to the system leading up to the great civil war which was a war heavily fought up and down the east coast. Despite all the research and money funded into the systems to protect the coast during the civil war several forts were still destroyed by cannon fire. Coastal Artillery over time has always had to be an evolving force as technology and weapons evolve the defense systems also have to get stronger. The uses of coastal artillery continued to flourish. The technological ever changing has caused the Coastal artillery to continue to evolve. The Air Defense Artillery is a major branch of the United States army in not only defending coast but key assets from air and missile attacks. The principles and weaponry of coastal artillery has in my mind no doubt paved the way for new weapon systems and tactics that are used in the branch I currently serve in, known as the Air Defense Artillery.

In Roman times St. Mary's Church was built with Twin Towers as part of the building. Originally the church was 3kms away from the sea but as the cliff was eroded it eventually became next to the see. There was a danger the cliff under the Twin Towers and therefore the Twin Towers themselves would be destroyed by erosion. To stop this happening many coastal defences and different types of management have been erected. The initial try at coastal management was in 1809.
Before the landings were to begin, the coastal German defenses had to be adequately prepped, and softened by a combination of a massive battering by United States ships, and bombing by the United States Air Force. Between the hours of 0300 and 0500 hours on the morning of June 6, over 1,000 aircraft dropped more than 5,000 tons of bombs on the German coastal defenses. As soon as the preliminary bombing was over, the American and British naval guns opened fire on the Normandy coastline (D' Este 112). A British naval officer described the incredible spectacle he witnessed that day: "Never has any coast suffered what a tortured strip of French coast suffered that morning; both the naval and air bombardments were unparalleled. Along the fifty-mile front the land was rocked by successive explosions as the shells of ships' guns tore holes in fortifications and tons of bombs rained on them from the skies. Through billowing smoke and falling debris defenders crouching in this scene of devastations would soon discern faintly hundreds of ships and assault craft ominously closing the shore.

Air Defense Artillery (ADA) has been used in multiple battles, from World War I to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Although, different names have been used to label Air Defense Artillery, they have always served the same purpose, to destroy enemy air threats. During World War II, Air Defense Artillery was known as Anti-Aircraft Artillery. This title continued, even through the battle of the Kasserine Pass. The day of 19 February 1943 began a wretched and depressing battle for America and its allies. Located in Tunisia, the Kasserine Pass is about a two mile wide gap in the Atlas Mountains, where some of the U.S II Corps and British military held off and defeated the Axis offensive. Experience was lacking for the Anti-Aircraft Artillery
The rifle and the coveted shotgun, literally brought home the bacon. With sleek models such as the Winchester .44 in 1873, accurate targeting sights increased a hunter’s ability to take down his prey, even from large distances, often exceeding 200 yards. The other weapon of choice, the shotgun, did not boast a straight, clean shot, but had the capacity to tear anything to shreds in a single blast. A short barrel provided the advantage of a wider blast range and easier handling (Trachtman et al 50). In many battles, the shotguns were often preferred for their simplifying features.
During the Revolutionary War, the Artillery assets that were available were a combination of cannons, mortars and howitzers. There were two types of cannons used at this time. The Field Guns, which were lightweight and easier to move, and the Siege Guns, which were much heavier and less mobile. The cannons utilized three different types of rounds. The rounds were solid shot, grapeshot, and canister. The solid shot rounds were used for structures, buildings, and ships. The grapeshot, which was a canvas bag of lead or iron balls, was ideal for long range personnel. The canister shot was a wooden cartridge carrying iron balls and when fired would explode like a shotgun for shorter range personnel. The cannons were mostly low trajectory as opposed the mortars which were high trajectory and fire bomb shells. The mortar was based on a wooden platform and a wedge of wood was used to incline the front of the barrel. There were land service mortars and sea service mortars. The land service being more mobile and the sea service much heavier and were permanently positioned on ships. By the time of the Revolutionary War there were nine types of land service mortar and four types of sea service mortar. They ranged from 4.4 to 13 inches. The rounds fired out of mortars were designed to fire at a high trajecto...

The stalemate on the Western front had developed by December 1914 because of the new advances in defensive weaponry where both sides had developed lethal weaponry like the machine guns and artillery, which subsequently led to trench warfare. The Machine Gun was a very dominant weapon in the First World War. It could kill hundreds of men a minute due to its rapid firing rate of 600 bullets a minute. However the machine guns that were used in the First World War weighed between 30kg – 60kg, would require a four to six operators and could heat up extremely quickly; clearly not very effective as a offensive weapon (Duffy, Michael. "Machine Guns.") Machine Guns were only effective for defense as they were extremely heavy, required a lot of ammunition a needed to be fixed into the ground. This made it severely difficult to attack and move with machine guns. Artillery was even deadlier as a defensive weapon and was one of the most important weapons of the First World War as it was the cause of the majority of human losses. The artillery ranged from field artillery to heavy and long range artillery that could fire long distances and would trap the enemies in their trenches. The Trench Mortar was also a very effective weapon in the war, which was a “tube” that would fire at a vertical angle (higher than 45 degrees) and could therefore be fired within the safety of the trench, unlike artillery. All these new advances in technology made trenches almost impossible to attack yet also kept each side trapped in their trenches.
The Battle of Antietam was filled will weaponry that was state of the art at its time. Smooth barrel and rifling barrel cannons where employed on both sides which helped to contribute to the high death toll; terrain was also instrumental at key locations on the battlefield. Such key locations were the cornfield North of Sharpsburg, Dunker church, Sunken Road, and Burnside bridge all of which contributed to bot...
Naval Mines And Torpedoes were also used. Mines were developed by the confederates. Mines were used first and later on torpedoes were used, and they sank over 40 Union ships. They were successful and this led to the creation of land mines and grenades that were used in other wars after the Civil War ended.(Marten,2012)
Mortars have a very pronounced arc of flight. They have a relatively low muzzle velocity and are unsuitable for direct fire. Their principle value comes from being able to lob shells behind an obstacle such as a fort or a hill. Unlike modern mortars, those used during the Civil War were bulky devises and mounted at a fixed angle usually between 45 and 50 degrees. They were not very accurate and depended solel...
Immediately, the Battle of the Atlantic began when “the British announced a naval blockage of Germany” on September 3, 1939(“World War II” 391). Eight days later the Germans ordered a “counter-blockage” of the Allies(“World War II” 391). The Germans hoped to stop the shipments of war supplies and food to the countries of France and Britain. After only four months into the war, German U-boats, mines, airplanes, and surface raiders had destroyed more than 215 merchant ships and two of Britain’s largest warships. Over 1,500 people had been killed in this short time. “It was clear that despite the lull on land, a long war lay ahead on the world’s water” (Pitt 8).
Gunpowder’s effect on the world can be exemplified through the grand changes in weapons. This can be shown through the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 by the English navy. In this sea battle, the Spanish Armada outnumbered the English navy immensely turning the odds against the English. However, the Spanish Armada still used old boarding tactics while the English used advanced weaponry. In the end, “the English used their superior firepower to whittle away the Spanish forces” (Schlager). The English navy's victory over the Spanish Armada illustrates the effects of the invention of gunpowder. With the successful usage of advanced gunpowder based weapons, the English navy crushed the opposition even when the Spanish Armada clearly had the upper hand. The defeat of the Spanish Armada shows that weapons based on gunpowder allowed countries with smaller armies to have a higher chance in winning their fights. The gunpowder weapons proved to be a tactical advant...
