World War One was also known as the ‘First Modern War’ as many new strategies and technologies were first used. In the war at sea, among all the new technologies and tactics, the submarine warfare was deemed the most effective and had been a wonder to the army. But later on in the war, most countries had started using unrestricted submarine warfare instead and had affected many people.

The submarine warfare is one of the four types of naval warfare which is meant by the use of submarines to inflict damage and attacks on other warships in the sea. A submarine is a submersible, underwater warship armed with torpedoes. Most of the submarines in World War One were powered by diesel engines and were inexpensive to build. It specified rules of confronting tankers and freighters which were not military boats by searching merchantmen and giving them to option to leave safely. This rules were implied to ensure the safety of the merchantmen in the vessels. During World War One, the German government has made vast use of their submarines, which was called the U-Boats, and had at first adhered to the rules. However, as mentioned in New-York tribune in February 05 1915: “The waters around Great Britain and Ireland, including the whole of the English Channel, are declared a war zone from and after February 18, 1915”. The usage of the German submarines in the beginning of World War One have had some prominent victories against the British naval targets, like when it made its first appearance in the war by firing the first torpedo and successfully sunk the British light cruiser HMS pathfinder. But soon after, the accomplishments of German submarines became rare. In spite of that, the submarine were still highly regarded by the Germans as being able to turn a campaign. As to be compared to other countries, Britain had suffered the most from the German U-Boats as they were on the brink of starvation when Germany used the unrestricted submarine warfare. In desperation, the British government adopted the convoy system on 24th May 1917.
