A sense of community is an essential aspect for a world class engineer to seek as it brings an impression of character and contentment. The construction of a community can be made possible through processes such as communication, networking, and engagement. This allows for everyone to work together and take action to solve a problem. Certainly a world class engineering student would need to apply many of the conditions to help build a community. Specifically, the student would interact with their peers and start from there. After interaction, a relationship between the peers and the student will be made. In other words, the world class engineering student will essentially discover the passions and interests by getting involved with campus activities. Making use of available resources can possibly open up any opportunities by creating networks. Searching for any internships is a great way to create future networking contacts and referrals. Attending the STEM club is a prime example of properly engaging into the material the student is currently learning about. Not only is attending clubs an only option but also taking part of any events is another. Events can go from business tours to meeting any employers to learn about any career opportunities.
Ever since the dawn of time, being apart of the community at school is something that I do not really participate in. Although I find involvement within the community interesting, I feel like I am limiting myself from something I could grow from. For my Cultural Plunge, I participated with Project Excell (Extending College Education for Lifelong Learning). This is a group that meets on campus, in the union, every Saturday morning from 9:00-11:00 AM. Each participant has a developmental disability and they come from various places around Manhattan. Project Excell offers around 4 different classes for the participants to choose from, which range from dancing/theatre to the history of Nigeria. After completing a “session,” the participants go through a graduation ceremony and then begin a different type of class for the next few weeks. I joined this group as a student ambassador, who assists the classroom teachers while building relationships with and tending to the needs of the participants.
Effective communication is a key principle for developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults. By ensuring that communication is effective it provides clarity on what behaviour is expected and a clear understanding of the tasks. In providing this children and young people will feel they are able to join in and it also provides positive experiences in variety of situations. The result is children will feel more at ease within the school setting and with those around them. By listening to what a child, young person or adult has to say a sense of value and self-worth can be achieved, which forms another factor in developing positive relationships, trust.
College helps students learn interpersonal skills. Being in college is way for students to socialize better. Living on campus students have many opportunities to interact with many different types of people. Depending on the topic, certain pedagogies fail to facilitate the understanding that is necessary to continue a student’s growth in the subject. Connecting with the students is important, especially with our centennial generation, who need the social connection more than any other. They do not know a world before technology and the connections that it facilitates, the choice to voice opinions and be heard. This follows well with the training that I participated in this summer, Captivating Kids Hearts (CKH). Our school is promoting the activities, allowing us to integrate collaborative codes of conduct and positive affirmations. During our training we spent time learning how to connect with each other on a personal level, emotions were difficult, but what it has given me is the permission to take time to make better connections with my students. The students must trust that the teacher has their best interest at heart. This trust will help build a positive relationship between student and teacher. This is important for giving the students a sense of purpose, as they will then be more motivated to succeed. This allows them to be more active in class activities and engage in discussion. Becoming a world-class engineering student is a process that takes time and diligence. World class engineers would involve themselves in a engineering based club, ask other engineers questions about their job, and do research on the websites given in chapter 2 of “Studying Engineering”. Currently I have not asked other engineers questions about their line of work or looked at the websites that are listed in the book by Raymond Landis. By actually learning what engineering is will be the next step in my process to becoming a world class engineer. The last step to strengthening my commitment to my goals is to create a road map for the classes I will be taking to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering in the span of four years.
