Students and parents of Worland High School should begin their college preparation much earlier in the student’s high school experience than most people believe. In some parts of the United States, students are being encouraged to start thinking about how to get into college when they are in middle school or even grade school. Some high-school students and parents agree that starting early to prepare for college and career is essential, while others argue that starting too soon may contribute to burnout. Although some may believe that it is wiser to wait and have high-school students face a "college admissions frenzy", I feel that students should start to prepare for college earlier in their education rather than in their senior year. This is because it puts a lot of stress on students. Although it is true that some believe students are not mature enough to make college based decisions early on, it is still wiser to prepare before the last minute due to the fact that waiting until the last minute can cause burnout, which can lead to many detrimental activities taking over a student’s academic life. Although these activities may not be dangerous, they may take away time that should be used for homework or college prep. Students may also be inclined to turn to alcohol and drug abuse if the stress they acquire becomes too great. This is due to the fact that, with stress, they can be inclined to give into peer pressure when offered substances such as drugs and alcohol. Every year there are thousands of students planning and tracking their goals. Seniors in high school are faced with the tough challenge, while the Juniors are left to worry another year. Finally, the point comes a student’s life where they must make one of the most important decisions in their educational lifetime. That choice is, which college to attend, and it is a very scrutinous process. Two of such colleges are the University of Iowa and St. Ambrose University, and although similarities like majors and minors are evident, there are many other differences including student life.
Throughout this course, topics such as the transition from high school to college, learning skills, self-discovery, and career exploration have been discussed. Conversations occurred concerning the challenges and benefits of private and public colleges as well as the transition from high school to college. We also talked about our strengths and weaknesses while studying. Finally we talked about the jobs that we wanted, and the jobs we would be good at. During the rest of this paper, I will go into more detail about the topics we discussed; and go more in detail with what I learned.
Many parents tend to question if they or their child is ready for early college. They fear their child isn’t mentally or emotionally focused to go off to college by themselves. What they don’t realize is students going to college early bring about better jobs, connections, opportunities, and a better experience.
Coming to college as an adult, we have many expectations and preconceptions of what college will or will not be. The expectations we have can influence our college life for the better or the worse. My experience since starting college has been an interesting one. People have misconceptions about college because they do not know what to expect. After doing some research, I have concluded that there are three major factors that are often misunderstood about college life. The first is the financial aspect of college. Second, is the relationship between the professors and students. Third is time management. These three factors play an important role in why people are afraid to go down the path to college.
Students entering college for the first time become concern with their college life. The students are on their own once they enter college. There are no parents or guardians telling them when to do homework, when to go to bed, or how to eat healthy. These student are now responsible on how they are going to succeed in school and meet their own needs. From the beginning, these students wonder what their experience is going to be like and are they going to handle the demands from college. Students are becoming more stressful due to academic demands, social life, and work. First-year college students should receive more help from school to learn how to help themselves and become independent.
First of all, many high school graduates cannot handle college. Isabel V. Sawhill and Stephanie Owen describe college as a place, “one can obtain a traditional four-year bachelor’s degree”. The work load outside of the classroom could be compared to working a full time job. For example, if a student is enrolled in four college courses and is in class a minimum of four hours the student should spend at least four to six hours of studying. This may be extremely agitating and stressful to a student that is not good at studying. The new college student may realize that the schoolwork is too much for him to handle and instead drop out. In Pharinet’s blog post, Is College for Everyone? He states that “…it is estimated that in the U.S., approximately 50% of students who begin college never graduate. There exist students who are not yet ready for the academic and financial challenges of college. College is a black hole, it ingests hundreds of thousands of dollars, hours of life, and dreams, then spits out a small scared and inexperienced human. It does this by having ridiculously high costs, wasting time and money, and by way of the large investment, killing the dreams of countless youth.
By the time students get to college, they're typically over the age of eighteen, meaning they're legally considered adults. So why not let them have a little more freedom over what they want to take? Why are students pressured into these hard-set frames with hardly any choice to what they do and don't want in their schedule? College is supposed to be a fun, and unforgetable learning expierence. Imposing unnecessary classes that only disinterest the student takse up valuable time, and takes away from the experience.

Further, a very small proportion of students complete a degree in four years—“among students starting at ‘four-year’ institutions, only 34 percent finish a B.A. in four years, 64 percent within six years, and 69 percent within eight and a half years.” Colleges always want students to graduate and support their alma mater. However this begins with deciding what student are mentally readiness and determination for the task that lies ahead, college. In today’s society we struggle trying to find a proper definition for college readiness. This is the main reason statistics and graduation rates suffer in the way that they do. Just because a high school student reaches the age of 18, obtains a high school diploma, and has functional literacy, does that really make students college ready?
College success has become a most desirable goal. However, many students struggle through college. In fact, according to the Website Ask.com, approximately 15 percent of college students receive a degree. Because I’m willing to earn a degree like many other successful students, I find that college is the stepping stone to my dream goals. I know that college is difficult, but I realize that attaining my dream of a college education will require me to understand the benefits of what I’m learning, to prepare for obstacles, to seek advice, and to create effective and reasonable strategies will help me achieve my goals.
Many students entering college may discover that they are not prepared for college curriculum courses. These students enter college courses facing a major issue. They find that high school has not adequately prepared them for the difficulty of college level courses. These students lacked the sufficient basis in being well equipped for advanced careers and college entry. These students have suffered a great inequality prevalent throughout high schools since several high schools do not receive equivalent aid. The unequal funding in high schools prevents students from attaining the same education that other students in different areas may receive. Unequal school funding in secondary schools causes inadequate preparation for students wanting to attend a post-secondary institution.
However, college may not be cut out for every teenager. Freshmen are dropping out after their first year because college can become a bit overwhelming on campus. The pressure of college whether it’s to maintain a high GPA score or impress parent’s, burdens many students. Although, college is supposed to improve their education, in hopes of obtaining a degree after graduation. Now, people attend college because his or her friends may go there.
College students have to balance work, family, and college activists and any delaying behavior from within can cause an unbalance. This behavior is called procrastinating and it can lead to problems in many areas of a student’s life. College students are the worst hit by this type of behavior because they have many different activities to focus on instead of studying. These activities can cause students to study when they have time which often is usually too short amount of time. There is a time and place to relax and enjoy life, but if students focus on playing around instead of getting their assignments done, college life will be stressful.
A student can be 18 years old trying to figure out what they are going to do with the rest of their lives and what area they should study. If they pick that they want to go into the college of business they are again faced with more options. Which department do they want marketing or accounting and typically most students get overwhelmed when trying to make these decisions. The main reason is there are just too many options available to them today. A hundred years ago kids followed in their family footsteps taking over for their father and learning the trade.
