On February 27, 1807, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine to Zilpah Wadsworth and Stephen Longfellow, an excellent lawyer and Congressman. Longfellow’s grandfather was General Wadsworth and he was named after his uncle on his mother’s side, Henry Wadsworth, who died while serving in the Navy. He was the second child born to a family with only one other boy, but that would soon change as he has a total of three brothers and four sisters. After Longfellow was only 7 months old, his mother wrote about his “fondness for singing and dancing” (Beebe). As a young boy, the poet loved to read and listen to stories told by the foreign sailors. Hearing the many different languages as a child must have, later on, inspired him to study foreign languages. Also, having such scholarly parents who encouraged reading at a very young age helped Longfellow discover his passion for writing. Though H.W. Longfellow enjoyed “normal boy activities”, he rather preferred reading under a tree, enjoying nature; which, presumably, is because his mother appreciated nature to a great extent.

“I was a poet and didn’t know because my feet were such long fellows.” This is a phrase that comes to mind when someone references Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. In a composition class, Vaccaro once said, “Longfellow is pretty much absent from most primary schools’ and high schools’ curriculums, and forgotten from many undergraduate and graduate schools’ study programs. Longfellow is not given the appreciation he deserves.” In the case of Longfellow, I agree that he is underappreciated. A Psalm of Life is an amazingly uplifting and optimistic poem from a young man’s perspective on how life should be lived. However, My Lost Youth is in the point of view of an old man dwelling on his past and all of his youthful endeavors. Both, A Psalm of Life
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Edgar Allan Poe are both highly esteemed poets from the past. Poe once wrote a poem called A Dream Within a Dream and it has many similarities to Longfellow’s poem A Psalm of Life. In these poems both authors talk about dreams. Edgar Allan Poe says that life is just a dream while Henry Wadsworth Longfellow states “Tell me not, in mournful numbers, Life is but an empty dream.” Also they both talk about life, and how to deal with life even if their view about life is completely opposite.

She had been suffering from the slow effects of mercury poisoning which she got during her Civil War service by the medicine she was given for typhoid pneumonia. She was her own person, did what she wanted to do, and wrote so well that she is greatly remembered today. Her biggest achievement was the publishing of “Little Women” and the book has never gone out of print. Her vast majority of short stories, poems, novels, and many more were and still are very popular. Louisa led a free life and succeeded greatly.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s “A Psalm of Life” is an encouraging poem in which Longfellow has utilized many different poetic elements including imagery, rhyme, metaphor, simile and others. The poem is very easy to understand and is engaging to the reader because of the images the poem invokes. Of all of the elements used, imagery is the most consistent and prevalent poetic element in the poem “A Psalm of Life”. Using imagery, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem describes a life not fully lived, how to live and what a life fully lived looks like.
...eople that are from two different classes could talk about one poem and how they feel about it. This really changed the how poetry was viewed considering Wordsworth was one of the best of his time other poets look at what he was doing and responded to his actions and thoughts. Wordsworth explores common themes of the romantic era and makes them apparent to his readers by finding something important to the common man and using common diction.
This Longfellow allows himself to be attach more so to “The Rainy Day” than any other of his other poems. This shows that he is the one at the window when he stated in his poem “The day is cold, and dark, and dreary,” as the spectator of the people that running everywhere to seek shelter in the street in that eighteen-hundreds parlor. Longfellow is the writer and could said that he is the one who is feeling all kinds of emotions that were implied in his poem. His choice of the lyrical poem that he chose made him the smarter one, to represent the depression effect of his commotion and to make an entrance for the reader to come to his
Henry David Thoreau was born in 1817. He grew up in Concord, Massachusetts with three siblings. He attended Harvard College where he graduated from in 1837. After graduating from college, Thoreau wasn’t sure what he wanted to do. He was close to his brother who later died after cutting himself while shaving (Henry). He later started working with his father at the pencil factory that his father operated. In the 1840s he began to write poetry (Bio.com). In class we learned in 1845 Thoreau built a small shack on Walden Pond where he stayed for over two years to do some writing. While on Walden Pond, he wrote several well-known books. “Look not mournfully into the past. It comes not back again. Wisely improve the present. It is thine. Go forth to meet the shadowy future, without fear, and with a manly heart.” This is a saying Longfellow read in Germany where his wife died. The words gave him hope for the future. It inspired him to want to write a series of psalms. The first one, “A Psalm of Life” written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, is an uplifting poem that compels us to feel hope for the future. After reading it the first time it had a powerful effect on me. Surprisingly, he wrote this poem few months after his first wife died. Longfellow took his wife’s death and interpreted it as a sign to look at life as fleeting and it passes quickly. I feel that Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, after his wife’s death, had an optimistic view on life in the poem, “A Psalm of Life”.
Considering a philosophical approach, this poem has a positive effect on humans to live a better life. It shows how life is serious yet fragile thing and we only get one shot, one wrong move and it's all gone. In life each day is a new day, and each day can be made better than your last. Knowing who you are and where you want to go in life while making your own path for that to happen instead of being 'dumb cattle' is brave. Living your life to the fullest but not leaving anything behind is like not living at all. These three things are Longfellow's key to living and the meaning of life. At the end of it all life is what you make it, live each day as fully as possible because you never know when it could all
