1. In the workplace there are many reasons why conflict occurs. In the situation between the police officers and city management, below are a couple of reasons for their conflict. First of all, city management and the police officers have conflicting needs. The city management wants to reduce overtime pay immediately and hire new police officers. The police officers want to continue receiving overtime pay because they have adjusted their life style around the extra money they receive. 2. Secondly, city management and the police officers have conflicting pressures. The city management is under pressure from the public because the public became aware of the cost of overtime being paid to police officers and is demanding a reduction. 1. Communicating with the officers before making a decision that will affect their lively hood. Communication is key and there are so many conflicts that occur due to lack of communication. Asking questions and getting clarity helps so that both parties understand what is expected and required which will cut down on negative conflict. In the case of the police officers and their overtime pay, city management should have spoken to the union before implementing the stoppage of overtime pay.
2. Stating the problem and asking for suggestions about how the problem can be solved. When there is a problem, we should follow the proper protocol to get the problem resolved. The breakdown in communication between the police officers and city management caused an unnecessary conflict because city management acted out of fear and the mayor possibly losing an election due to the overtime pay the police officers were receiving, which was mandatory because of the promise made by the mayor to lower crime by increasing police patrols in high-crime

Police corruption is a difficult issue cities have to deal with and one of the oldest problems in the police force. Corruption can be defined as the mistreatment of public power for personal benefit or private and the use of excessive force either emotional or physical. In this essay I will explain in detail federal indictments of Los Angeles Country Sheriff officers use of mistreatment of jail inmates and visitors. Another topic I will explain is the transfer of Los Angeles Country Sheriff hired officers with questionable background. Finally I will end by analyzing the hiring of new Sheriff deputies under the “Friends of the Sheriff” program. There are several ways police departments could take to reduce police corruption. One of the simplest things to do and it requires is hold the law enforcement personnel accountable for actions deemed to be in the wrong. What happens when officers forget their role and responsibilities? The offending group would then exclude them socially and it could escalate to physical violence. On the lower level these type of offences do not seem like they affect society, however, the offending officers here are taking money from the government budget for task enforcement with no noticeable increase in the effectiveness of the police taskforce. Police agencies have beautiful roles and functions in accomplishing law enforcement for protection and maintenance of peaceful, orderly, and safe society. Police officers are meant to be authoritative figures that can make the people feel safe and protected. The history of policing and establishment of polices departments in America reflect roles of police officers in fulfilling the defined and perceived the public need for law enforcement bodies that will look after keeping the peace and order in the communities. However, the temptations of time and circumstances have been always around and allowed permeation of corruption in police officers.

We need to meet not just when there is a crisis or a big crime. We should do things to build relationships that are not so full of conflict. Then it would be easier to work together. Conflict exists in every organization as a result of incompatible needs, goals, and objectives of two people while aligning to the overall business requirements. Though disagreement is linked with negative impact, the approach has healthy considerations (Leung, 2008).
