If you ask 100 different people what they value the most, odds are, you’ll receive 100 different answers. From money to family and from family to happiness, the responses are endless. What each person values depends on their past experiences and influences from other people. Many people have values that essentially shape their essence and what they perceive as true success. In The Great Gatsby, Nick, the main character, expresses immense work ethics and integrity that reflect his perspective on what life is about.

Being a good friend sometimes means overlooking the obvious. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a novel set in the 1920s. It details the story of the narrator, Nick Carraway, an aspiring bondsman who has moved to the West Egg section of Long Island from Minnesota in search of business. Nick is considered a man of "new money." He has established and now manages his own riches. He meets a particularly mysterious man, his neighbor, Jay Gatsby. Through Gatsby, he meets people from the East Egg of Long Island, who are considered to be of "old money," wealth or business that has been inherited through generations. Over time, Nick and Jay become great friends. Nick helps Gatsby learn about himself and his aspirations in life, and vice versa.
The Value of Jay Gatsby Jay Gatsby, who is one of the main characters of the Great Gatsby, is a man with a mysterious background and an unknown personality. He doesn't mention too much about his past except certain fabricated highlights of his life which were designed to impress others. The strange and humorous thing is that he carries articles of evidence that back up most of his lies to prove that he isn't lying. Gatsby is also the kind of man that is used to getting what he wants no matter what the consequences are, causing him to be a very determined man that once has an idea in his mind won't let it go until he accomplishes it. The things that Jay Gatsby values the most is money, to impress others and gain acceptance and most of all, having things his own way.
Nick believes the American Dream, this is examined in Claire Stocks criticism, she states, “ Is that he believes the American Dream. Nether less, it is only Nick (whose inherited wealth is on the decline and who identifies with Gatsby’s desire to improve his social standing” (Claire Stocks 4) Nick understands the feeling and does not show judgment towards Gatsby, yes he looks down for the illegal things Gatsby does but, not for the wealth and big parties, he understands. Rather, William Voegeli A critic of “Gatsby and the pursuit of happiness” shows a different side to this, he states, “Nick rents, Gatsby buys, and the Buchanans inherit,” also stating “”you’re no better than anybody else and no one else is better than you” (William Voegeli 1) Which shown in the novel is not true, Nick is a middle class character compared to the magnificent West Egg class. He gets on his feet just because of his father 's money. These people are not equal, when it comes to society, they may have the same rights but when it comes to what they can and can not do there is a line drawn. Yes you can 't put all your value on money but, the lack of money can create a stopper in society. So yes, Nick was taught not to judge, that not all people have the things you do but, as he goes through the story he sees a change that he wants everyone to be in uniform because he can 't stand the empowerments of money anymore. Nick states, “When I came back from the East last autumn I felt that I wanted the world to be in uniform and at a sort of moral attention forever; I wanted no more riotous excursions with privileged glimpses into
Nick Caraway, the narrator of The Great Gatsby, grew as a person throughout the book. In his earlier years Nick went to Yale to study literature, he also fought in World War 1. When Nick was younger he lived in Minnesota then he moved to New York to learn the business bond. He lives in the West Egg which is a part of Staten Island which is home to the newly rich. In the East Egg live the wealthy, who have had money through generations.
In this day and age, money is a very important asset to have. One needs to have at least enough to live on, though great amounts are preferable. In The Great Gatsby, by Thomas F. Fitzgerald, having a large amount of money is not enough. It is also the way you acquire the money that matters. Gatsby and Tom both have a lot of money yet Daisey picks one over the other, not because of the difference in the amount they have, but because of the manner in which it is attained.
Like God observing the world, we are the observers of The Great Gatsby. According to German philosopher Immanuel Kant’s two categorical imperatives, Daisy and Jay were unethical. Kant’s categorical imperatives state; ‘Act as if your action could be elevated into universal law’ and. Based on the principles of Kant, Daisy and Jay were unethical in several ways, according to Kant’s two categorical imperatives. Daisy used people emotionally and lacked responsibility, and Jay was manipulative towards the people around him. The Great Gatsby is a great example of a society that does not abide by Kantian principles.
In the novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald many of the characters could not be classified as a truly moral, a person who exhibits goodness or correctness in their character and behavior. Nick Carraway is not moral by any means; he is responsible for an affair between two major characters, Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan. Jay Gatsby does show some moral qualities when he attempts to go back and rescue Myrtle after she had been hit by Daisy. Overall Gatsby is unquestionably an immoral person. Nick Carraway and Gatsby share many immoral characteristics, but a big choice separates the two. Daisy Buchanan is an extremely immoral person; she even went to the lengths of taking someone's life. Jay and Daisy are similar but Daisy is borderline corrupt. The entire story is told through Nick Carraway's point of view and by his carelessness it is obvious the narrator possesses poor values.
01. From never have reading the book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, I had the chance to make several predictions throughout the reading. By reading the blurb beforehand I kept constantly trying to figure out when Jay and Daisy would meet. Moving forward in the storyline, Jay Gatsby was having a party and “the honor would be entirely Gatsby’s it said, if I would attend his ‘little party’ that night,” (Fitzgerald 41). I thought that by inviting Nick, that Gatsby would expect him to bring Daisy and that’s how the two would reconnect. Soon I learned that, this was not the case and that in fact Gatsby was quite shy around her. Predicting in the book is thinking ahead to try to imagine what the characters are going to do next and in this novel I kept trying to place which couple would profess their love for each other first. Whether Daisy and Jay, if it would be Tom and Mrs. Wilson, or even Nick and Jordan.
Ambition is an important aspect in life. It allows people to develop goals and to strive for something that will benefit them such as a position of power or reuniting with a past lover once again. However, becoming obsessively determined on one objective can lead to negative consequences, even death. In the novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Selfishness is a disease of the soul that every person experiences several times throughout their life. To say that it has never been experienced would be hypocrisy. To say that it is a “good thing”, would be erroneous. Although as humans we like to lie to ourselves, it is no question that selfishness can make any person act like a fool. It consumes us and makes us into someone we are not. Whether it leads to getting people killed, falling in love, or buying alcohol, selfishness always leads to destruction.
Lies are a treacherous thing, yet everyone tells a few lies during their lifetime. Deceit surrounds us all the time; even when one reads classic literature. For example, F. Scott Fitzgerald makes dishonesty a major theme in his novel The Great Gatsby. The falsehoods told by the characters in this novel leads to inevitable tragedy when the truth is revealed.
Nick Carraway is the only character worth knowing in The Great Gatsby. He is living in East Egg with the rich and powerful people. He is on the guest lists to all of their parties and yet he is the person most worthy of attending such parties because he is well bread and his family is certainly not poor. “Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.” (Ch1, P1). These words were taught to Nick by his father showing the qualities that a man with goals and values would have in a place where goals and values was no existent. His Judgmental eye for character and guts of using them when desired makes him more interesting. He has a greatest fear that he will be all alone by himself.
The Great Gatsby: Unfaithfulness and Greed. The love described in the novel, The Great Gatsby, contains "violence and egoism not tenderness and affection." The author, F. Scott Fitzgerald, writes on wealth, love, and corruption. Two coupes, Tom and Daisy Buchanan and George and Myrtle Wilson, match perfectly with these categories. Both couples are different in the way they choose to live together, but are similar in a few ways. Unfaithfulness and greed are the only similarities the couples shared.
Most self respecting people have ethics and morals they try to abide by. They create standards that they live life by and construct their own philosophy with. In the novel The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, morals and ethics are a scarce practice. Jay Gatsby lives his life by the over bearing morals and values of devotion, corruption, and his will to control.
