Ancestors are animals or forms of the animals that lived a long time ago. Relatives share common ancestors. For example, if you have cousins, one of your parents and one of their parents have the same father and mother, and the same grandparents, etc. A trait is a feature, such as a body part, like a tail. Elephants and wooly mammoths have similarities, or traits in common, such as they both had or have long trunks. The saber tooth tiger, on the other hand, is not believed to be closely related to tigers. Let’s explore extinct versus living things and how they relate to one another.
When you see pictures of elephants and woolly mammoths, you can certainly see a lot of similarities between them. Woolly mammoths are believed to have been about the same size as today’s African elephants. They both have long trunks that they use for many things, such as picking up and placing food into their mouths, and sucking up water. Their four legs are strong and sturdy to support their enormous weight, which can be as much as seven tons, which is 14,000 pounds! The saber tooth tiger is now often called the saber tooth cat, which makes more sense. The saber tooth tiger had two very large, curved canine teeth that were believed to be about one foot long! These teeth were not very strong, and they could easily break off. These animals are believed to have been shorter than today’s lions, but twice as heavy as them.
