The title of my book is Wonder and it's a fictional story. The author of the story is R.J. Palacio. She was inspired to write Wonder after she took her son out for ice cream and witnessed him cry at a girl with facial birth defects. She wanted to turn an event that happened to her into a valuable lesson. The story takes place in New York City in the year 2012.
The main character of Wonder is August or “Auggie” a ten year old who was born with a facial deformity. All Auggie wants is to live a normal life and attend his first year of school. Another common character is Auggie’s older sister Via. She sometimes feels less important when it comes to her family since everyone often puts Auggie’s needs first. Another character is Miles, one of Julian's friend who eventually helps Auggie. Charlotte is another character who is the first to show Auggie around the school and known as the “goodie two shoes.” There is also Miranda who used to be bestfriends with Via until she lied and pretended to have a deformed brother while at camp. She is extremely close to Auggie and thinks of him as a brother.
Auggie is about to start fifth grade, his first time at a regular school because he was always homeschooled by his mom. Auggie doesn't really like the idea of school and his father agrees scared that Auggie isn't ready for all the snarky comments kids can make, but his mother disagrees and thinks it's a good idea to get him out there so he can learn more than what she alone can teach. Auggie attends Beecher Prep. Middle School and introduced to three kids, Jack Julian and Summer by the principal, Mr. Tushman. First day, Auggie walks to his homeroom class with his head down. Charlotte and Jack greet him and Julian just ignores him. When he settles in his desk, he realizes his teacher, Ms. Petosa, hesitate when she looks at him. All the students introduce themselves and when it comes to Auggie, Julian makes a comment about his braid in the back of his head if it's a Padawan braid. One of Auggie’s favorite character from Star Wars Jango Fett and Julian asks about how he feels about Darth Sidious. Auggie didn't think it was
a harmful question until he realized Darth Sidious is a character whose face becomes deformed. During lunch, Auggie struggles to whom to sit next to, so he sits alone.
As a child going outside was something that excited you. The freedom of running through the grass or climbing the trees was something that always excited you. As times change and technology improves going outside is not a happy thought anymore. In John Stilgoe’s Outside Lies Magic and Rachel Carson’s The Sense of Wonder, they both discuss the feelings you get while going outside and the importance why we should go outside. Though both have different reasons why we should both books are relevant to today.

Auggie was born with a different looking face and everyone always stared at him, but Julian does a lot more than just look. He said that Auggie looked like a Star Wars character named Darth Sidious. What made it so mean was that the Star Wars character was burned very badly and his face looked like Auggie’s normal face.

"My name is August, by the way. I won't describe what I look like. Whatever you're thinking is probably worse." Often praised as a beautiful and elegant novel Wonder by Raquel J. The majority side with Julian, as he spent the break turning other male students against Jack. Auggie and Summer, as well as Reid, Max G., and Max W., never forsake him. Julian writes cruel notes and places them in their lockers, while Julian’s mother begins expressing her opinion that Auggie doesn’t belong at Beech Prep publicly. The situation improves slightly overtime. Jack and Auggie write notes of their own to place in Julian’s locker, and some of the students become tired of Julian’s antics. Mr. Tushman, the rest of the faculty, and most of the parents disagree with Mrs. Albans. Via’s boyfriend, Justin, even intervenes when he witness a group of kids bullying Jack. The biggest change in dynamics, however, occurs on a field trip. The students travel to a nature reserve for a weekend camping trip. Jack and Auggie wonder off during an outdoor movie and find themselves in the cornfield where they encounter students from another school. The seventh graders, especially one named Eddie, are viciously cruel to Auggie because of his appearance; they call him Gollum, Freddy Krueger, among other names. Jack defends him and tries to push his way through, but the older students won’t let them pass. Other students from Beecher Prep hear the commotion and investigate. Henry, Amos and Miles, members of Julian’s pack, also defend Auggie. The situation escalates when Eddie gets physical by grabbing and pulling Auggie down to the ground. Amos rams into Eddie to prevent further injury to Auggie and so they could escape. Henry grabs a hold of Auggie to help him run with the others. When they finally stop, the students rejoice in surviving the incident with high fives, even with Auggie. They befriend him and vow they will always defend him. Auggie is happy as he is now accepted by his

At first Auggie did not make a lot of friends, because of his differences and facial features. Then one of the kids in the class named Jack befriended Auggie, because his mom told him to be kind to Auggie. “Why fit in when you were born to stand out?” This quote by Dr. Seuss focuses on the common fear of standing out in a crowd, whether it is voluntary or not. One may stand out in a crowd, for many reasons, whether negatively or positively, but is up to that person to rise up and embrace their differences. In the novel, Wonder, by R.J Palacio, Auggie is a character who fights past his self-consciousness, while capturing seemingly everyone’s heart with his bright mind and extraordinary self.
Auggie is a boy who is born with a facial deformity; the book covers his daily struggles and insecurities throughout his first year of middle school. Although it's been over three years since I’ve read that book; I know that he had a notable impact on me.
