Palacio is a emotional, creative, and inspired by an experience when she had a chance encounter with an extraordinary child. When Auggie was middle-school age, his parents Isabel and Nate decided it was time for him to go to mainstream school. At first Auggie did not make a lot of friends, because of his differences and facial features. Then one of the kids in the class named Jack befriended Auggie, because his mom told him to be kind to Auggie. In the book Wonder, Auggie has a rare face deformity known as mandibulofacial dysostosis, commonly known as Treacher Collins Syndrome (TCS).
TCS occurs in only 1 in 50,000 births. People saw Auggie as out-of-the ordinary, because Auggie wore a space helmet to hide his face deformity at home and when he went out in public. Auggie wished that every day was Halloween, so that he could wear a mask. Auggie said, “If others could first “see” who you are with a mask, then they could possibly accept any deformity when they actually see your face.” According to the novel, Wonder, Auggie can boil the ordinary and not-ordinary discussion down to "the only reason I'm not ordinary is that no one else sees me that way” (Palacio, …show more content…
3). What would you do if you were born with a rare face deformity or a rare brain cyst, how would you live your life? Since birth, I have had arachnoid cyst at the base of my brain, which affects my gait, processing ability, and motor skills. In the beginning, I went to public school until the spring of my first-grade year. Unlike Auggie, people could not see my deformity, but my deformity affects my brain’s overall functioning ability. My mom took me out of school to homeschool from first grade through the beginning of my freshman year of high school. In eighth grade, my mom thought it would be a good idea to send me back to torture school. At first, I did not like the idea. If I had never went back to school I would have never met my best friends, Trey Jones and McKenna Melton. Overall, unlike Auggie who wished he could always wear a mask, so that others could accept him first without seeing his deformity. From the beginning, I have accepted myself for who I am; therefore, my peers accepted me for who I am. In the book Wonder, Auggie shows he was not afraid to go to a public school for the first time and he wanted to make some new friends.
Isabel and Nate took him to school on the first day and dropped him off at the middle-school. His peers stared at him as he walked into school. Auggie kept walking into school, he probably was pretending that the Star Wars character, Chewbacca, was there protecting him. Auggie was kind to his peers, even though some of them bullied him and left him out. Auggie was befriended by a boy named Jack Will and a girl named Summer Dawson. Jack Will and Summer Dawson accepted Auggie for who he was as a normal person with a rare face
deformity. In conclusion, the writer shared about a rare facial deformity, personal story, and acceptance. Auggie was not afraid to go to public school for the first time even though he had a rare face deformity and he knew kids would make fun of him. From my personal experience, you should except others for the way God made them and not the way the world perceives them. Acceptance is the best thing in the whole entire universe. If I had not went to public school, I would have never met my two best friends. Are you able to accept others for who they are even if they are different from you?
In the Lilies of the Field by William E. Barrett, Homer and Mother Maria both display straightforward, hardworking, and stubborn character traits. Firstly, Homer and Mother Maria both display a straightforward personality by being brutally honest about their opinions. For example, when Mother Maria asks Homer to build a chapel, Homer speaks his mind by telling her he does not want to build it. Mother Maria shows her straightforward behavior during Homer’s stay at the convent. One morning, when Homer sleeps in late, Mother to becomes extremely upset and is not afraid to show how she feels about him. Secondly, both Homer and Mother Maria display a hardworking spirit. Homer is a hardworking man because after finally agreeing to build the chapel,

Have you ever reached success? If the answer is yes, then you probably have had support from family or friends along the way. In “Wonder Children” this theme was crucial to the success of both Maria Anna and Wolfgang. In the passage both of Maria Anna's parents called her a “prodigy” which encouraged her, and from a young age taught her how to play instruments. Wolfgang was at this point driven by his sister's success, which all started from a young age. The dad definitely played a huge role in both Maria Anna's, and Wolfgang's success as musicians. In the Passage “The Family's first prodigy” Maria Anna became even more successful, and in a way overshadowed her brother Wolfgang, but his kind actions and words, helped his sister achieve her goals. And later in the passage he had his time to shine. Support from family or friends can separate a person from achieving their goals, or stumbling under the pressure.
In the novel “The Chosen” by Chaim Potok, the story talks about a strong relationship between two friends. In the novel Potok also shows that the change in motives was what the main characters used to build up and make new connections. Reuven Malter, also known as a protagonist in the story, experiences many motives that led to changes, and how it affected him as the novel comes to an end. Making friends and communicating was a huge deal for Reuven and Danny. Each of them had to learn how to do those things to see how it would impact their future. The author shows a motive for each of the characters, and that the quote Ben Jonson said “True happiness consists not in multitude of friends, but in the worth and choice”, can be consider as the theme for the book.
The Chosen by Chaim Potok is a phenomenal novel about two Jewish boys who live in two very discrepant worlds because of the impressions of their fathers. The Hasidic Rabbi, Reb Saunders wants his son, Danny Saunders, to perdure the family legacy and become a Rabbi. Mr. Malter, Reuven’s father, is an Orthodox Jew who is easy going about what he wants his son to do. Throughout the book, both Reuven and Danny face problems and sufferings that helped them both to become stronger and get through the hard times they faced.
The play “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry has many interesting characters. In my opinion, the most fascinating character is Ruth because of her many emotions and captivating personality. She goes through extreme emotions in the play such as happiness, sadness, anger, stress, and confusion. Ruth is very independent, firm, kind, witty, and loving.
How would you feel growing up in a world and never being considered normal? The book “Wonder” by R.J Palacio features a young boy, August Pullman, whose life was anything but normal. Life isn’t always easy, but for August it was especially grueling. Even though August would have gotten an education if he stayed home schooled, August’s school experience was good for him because he learned a lot of new things, he had awesome yet frightening adventures, and he made some friends along the way.
In the play A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry (1959), the author depicts an African American family whom struggles with the agonizing inferiority present during the 1950s. Hansberry illustrates the constant discrimination that colored people, as a whole, endured in communities across the nation. Mama, who is the family’s foundation, is the driving force behind the family on the search for a better life. With the family living in extreme poverty, their family bond is crucial in order to withstand the repression. Hansberry effectively portrays the racism within society, and how it reinforced unity amongst the family members.
Ten year old August Pullman --or as his friends and family call him, Auggie-- required several reconstructive surgeries as a young child because he was born with Treacher-Collins syndrome, a rare craniofacial deformity. Because of this, Auggie has never been able to go to a public school and has been home schooled up until fifth grade. A month before school, Auggie and his mother go on a tour of Beecher Prep, where he meets three students; Charlotte, Jack Will and Julian. On Auggie’s tour with student’s, Julian makes very rude comments regarding his face and the other kids chide him for that. On the first day of school, Auggie realiz...

Helen Keller once shared, "Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and success achieved." In the book, The Chosen by Chaim Potok, Billy endured agonizing trials and circumstances as a young child. A tragic accident resulted in not only the loss of Billy's vision, but also the death of his mother. While many would be annihilated by such pain, Billy demonstrates joy. Bitterness and a sullen attitude do not characterize him, but rather, Billy shows the traits of optimism, patriotism, and graciousness
Starting the year with only had one or two friends but at the end, he realized that has changed. The point of the book where this mainly changed was when the school went to a nature place with school. Auggie was being picked on by kids from another school, but then kids from his own school stand up for him and help him from the attacking other kids. After this moment he feels really good about his new friends and how far he has come this year.
Auggie’s character traits help him in his new journey as he begins public school. His sense of humor helps him overlook his condition with deformities. Auggie’s different forms of bravery help him carry on in life without others looking down on him. Finally, Auggie is able to reach out and create friendships with others through his kindness. Auggie’s character traits not only help him, but also speak to others by saying that it doesn’t matter how you look on the outside, but how you act towards people from the
In the story My Favorite Chaperone, by Jean Davies Okimoto, I believe the theme is how working together makes life's struggles easier. The characters show this theme throughout the story. As children immigrants, the main characters struggle with combining a new culture with their family culture to find a new identity without bringing shame to their family. In the story, Maya, the main character, faces issues in how to fit in with a new world in America. In this new world there are different rules and expectations while she still has to respect and follow her family's traditions and rules. This conflict is shown when Maya wants to go to a school dance, but knows her parents would never let her go especially after she gets in trouble for
